In 282 patients presenting with adverse reactions to mild analgesics, prick tests were performed with components of analgesic drugs; in some of them, commercial preparations were also tested. In 19 patients (7%), a total of 40 conclusively positive immediate reactions was found: there were 22 reactions to pyrazolone derivatives, 14 reactions to commercial preparations, and one singular reaction to phenacetin, phenobarbital, carbromal and vitamin B1, respectively. Cross-sensitivity to different pyrazolone derivatives was observed in only 5 of 15 patients with a positive reaction to at least one

BACKGROUND: Patch tests to p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and related substances often show concurrent reactions that can be attributed to separate sensitization or cross-reactivity.
OBJECTIVES: In order to understand the health risks associated with cross-reactivity, we studied cross-reactivity of eight chemicals in vitro by measurement of T-cell proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), T-cell lines (TCL), and T-cell clones (TCC) of subjects with a positive patch test result to PPD.
PATIENTS/METHODS: We studied PBMC from 13 patients and were able to generate TCL from seven and

Contact allergy to topical corticosteroids (TCs) is an emerging problem, whose diagnosis can be complex owing to the peculiar characteristics of steroid allergens and the possible inadequacy of current diagnostic methods, including concentration and vehicle used in patch testing. The occurrence of cross-reactions among different TCs is not rare, but prediction of these is not sufficiently reliable. Moreover, the distinction between true cross-reactivity and concomitant sensitization may be difficult. The original classification proposed by Coopman et al. has been distinguished corticosteroids

The ingestion or inhalation of some proteins may lead to adverse immune reactions. Allergens may trigger allergic reactions in genetically predisposed individuals when they are absorbed through the skin or make contact with mucous membranes. An allergic disease often deteriorates the quality of life and may sometimes be life-threatening due to anaphylactic shock. A number of allergens have been characterized from various multicellular organisms to date. It is thought to be reasonable to pay a special attention to the substance which is highly cross-reactive and which causes adverse responses i

INTRODUCTION: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem chronic granulomatous disease found predominantly in the lungs and lymph nodes. Its pathologic hallmark is the presence of systemic non-caseating granulomas; however, a variation of this disease known as "sarcoid-like reaction" has been described in patients with underlying cancer.
REPORT: Sarcoid-like reactions in patients with hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) tumors are rare findings, with only 15 cases having been reported in the English language literature. These reactions can be found in local lymph nodes or in distant organs, and when present in pa

Allergies and adverse reactions to sulfonamide medications are quite common. Two distinct categories of drugs are classified as sulfonamides: antibiotics and nonantibiotics. The two groups differ in their chemical structure, use, and the rate at which adverse reactions occur. Cross-reactivity between the two groups has been implied in the past, but is suspect. Acetazolamide, from the nonantibiotic group, is routinely used in the prevention and treatment of high altitude issues and may not need to be avoided in individuals with a history of sulfonamide allergy. This review addresses the differe

We showed earlier that most patients with contact dermatitis due to corticosteroids show cross-reactions when patch tested with hydrocortisone-17-butyrate (H-17-B). To test whether H-17-B could be used for detecting topical corticosteroid allergy, we screened patients undergoing routine patch testing with H-17-B. Patients with clearly allergic or doubtful/mildly irritant patch test reactions to H-17-B, and with a history suggesting topical corticosteroid allergy, were further tested with a large panel of steroid preparations. 20 out of 4039 patients (0.5%) showed definite allergic test reactio

BACKGROUND: There is scarce information in the literature about a possible association between atopy and certain clinical manifestations of NSAID sensitivity.
OBJECTIVES: (1) To evaluate the prevalence of atopy in patients proved to be sensitive to cyclooxygenase inhibitors. (2) To assess cross-reactivity to two alternative NSAIDs, paracetamol (acetaminophen) and nimesulide.
METHODS: NSAID-sensitive patients attending an allergy clinic and unselected controls were prick tested with inhalant allergens. Oral challenges with NSAIDs were carried out by the single-blinded (SBOC) method. Clinical

Sulfonamides, particularly antimicrobial sulfonamides, have been implicated as a common cause of a spectrum of hypersensitivity reactions. Immediate IgE-mediated reactions have been reported but are much less common than delayed cutaneous reactions. Delayed cutaneous reactions range from benign exanthems to severe cutaneous reactions such as Stevens Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms. Sulfonamides can be subclassified as antimicrobial sulfonamides and non-antimicrobial sulfonamides, which are also distinguished by key structur

Background: Proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs, and they are generally well tolerated. However, several immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions due to PPIs have been reported. Objective: To review the clinical characteristics and management of immune-mediated immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions to PPIs. Methods: We performed a search of a medical literature data base from January 1980 to October 2019 by using keywords that included "proton-pump inhibitors" and "hypersensitivity." Results: Anaphylaxis is the most-common clinical pres

Bisphosphonates are frequently used to treat bone diseases characterized by increased osteoclastic bone resorption. Adverse skin reactions to bisphosphonates are rare and range from benign to severe. Different cutaneous skin reactions have been reported with ibandronate in clinical and pharmacovigilance studies, from macula-papular rashes to toxic epidermal necrolysis. We report two new cases of erythematous and oedematous skin lesions to oral monthly ibandronate, appearing after multiple intakes of the drug. Prick tests were positive in both cases at 48 or 96 hours, and one could be confirmed

This article aimed to study the antigenicity of nucleocapsid proteins (NPs) in six pathogenic phleboviruses and to provide theoretical evidence for the development of serological diagnostic reagents. NPs of six pathogenic phleboviruses were expressed and purified using a prokaryotic expression system and rabbits were immunized with individual recombinant NPs. Cross-reactions among NPs and rabbit sera were determined by both indirect ELISA and Western blotting analyses, and the sera titer was determined by indirect ELISA. Furthermore, sera from SFTS patients were also detected by each recombina

The first descriptions of crossed allergenicity were concerned with the associations between Pollen/Food allergy: birch pollen/apple, grass pollen/wheat-tomato etc. Since then other crossed reactions have been described, involving pneumoallergens, tropallergens, drugs, hymenoptera venoms. Crossed reactions are the combination of an antigen with a recognition molecule other than that which stimulated its synthesis, because of epitope(s) that are common or sufficiently close between two antigens. The techniques of immunoprints and RAST inhibition give confirmation of crossed reactions that are s

Non-opioid analgesics, antipyretics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are widely used, but suspected allergic reactions to these drugs are rare, especially in children. Most frequent reactions are cutaneous (urticaria, angioedema) and respiratory (rhinitis, asthma). Other reactions (anaphylaxis, potentially harmful toxidermias) are rare. In a few patients, reactions may result from a specific (allergic) hypersensitivity, with positive responses in prick and intradermal tests (anaphylaxis, immediate urticaria and/or angioedema) and in intradermal and patch tests (non-immediate reactions)

BACKGROUND: Adverse drug reactions result in thousands of deaths, disabilities, and other serious outcomes. Nurses and midwives administer drugs, monitor both therapeutic and adverse drug reactions, and are on the front line of safety reporting. This study aimed to assess awareness of nurses and midwives about pharmacovigilance and their practice in monitoring and reporting adverse drug reactions at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 147 randomly selected nurses and midwives. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data.

Clinically, one must be able to differentiate between an allergic reaction and an adverse reaction. Clinical manifestations of allergic reactions range from urticaria and rash to bronchoconstriction, laryngeal edema, hematologic disorders, and other serious reactions. Many drugs administered in the perioperative setting can cause allergic reactions. Antibiotics such as penicillins, beta-lactam antibiotics, and sulfonamides are the most common class of drugs that produce allergic reactions. A detailed allergy history is important when deciding if a patient can receive a drug that may cross-reac

Molybdenum-, tungsten-, and ruthenium-based complexes that control the stereochemical outcome of olefin metathesis reactions have been recently introduced. However, the complementary nature of these systems through their combined use in multistep complex molecule synthesis has not been illustrated. A concise diastereo- and enantioselective route that furnishes the anti-proliferative natural product neopeltolide is now disclosed. Catalytic transformations are employed to address every stereochemical issue. Among the featured processes are an enantioselective ring-opening/cross-metathesis promot

The need for a reliable method for the immunological diagnosis of kala-azar is imperative. Leishmania donovani donovani and L. donovani chagasi culture promastigotes were compared as antigens in a direct agglutination test (DAT) for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. Both antigens were successfully employed for the DAT, showing 100% sensitivity and greater than 98% specificity when used to test sera from Brazilian and African kala-azar, Chagas' disease, malaria, filaria and syphilis patients, and on sera from Brazilian controls. Cross-reactions were sometimes observed when cuta

The sensitivity and specificity of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the diagnosis of Taenia solium cysticercosis was evaluated in experimentally and naturally infected pigs, using T. solium larval scoleces and its fractionated 1st and 2nd peaks on Sephadex G-200 as antigens. First peak antigen gave maximum sensitivity and highest antibody titres. The overall sensitivity of this test was found to be 91.5, 95.8 and 70.8% with scolex, 1st and 2nd peak antigens, respectively. False positive reactions occurred in 9.09% of uninfected pigs with scolex and 1st peak antigens and cross-
