A transparent, highly conductive, and ultrastretchable co-crosslinked hydrogel for high-sensitivity and wide-range wearable strain sensors.

Hydrogels, celebrated for their biocompatibility and flexibility, hold immense potential for monitoring physiological activities. However, it remains a formidable challenge to design hydrogels that simultaneously deliver exceptional mechanical properties (e.g. ultra-high stretchability, skin-like softness, and anti-fracture toughness) with superior conductivity, transparency, and robust environmental adaptability to meet practical application requirements. Herein, we report a one-step fabrication of transparent and conductive hydrogels with superior anti-fracture and deformability through hydr

Multifunctional Polyphenolic Nanoparticle-Cross-Linked Aminoglycoside Hydrogels.

Multifunctional hydrogels with integrated antioxidant and antibacterial activities are vital for modulating the wound microenvironment, mitigating oxidative stress, and preventing infection. However, efficient construction of such hydrogels with programmable responsiveness and structural integrity that can be tailored to therapeutic demands remains challenging. Herein, we developed a modular, functionally programmable hydrogel platform constructed via an in situ Schiff base reaction between aldehyde-functionalized polyphenolic nanoparticles and aminoglycoside antibiotics. The resulting nanocom

Preparation of Yellow Sodium Alginate Capable of Cross-Linking with Mg2+ to Form the Hydrogel of Magnesium Alginate Quickly and Easily.

The bright yellow sodium alginate (YSA) powders were successfully prepared by a solid-phase reaction. The mechanism of the reaction and the structure of products have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The terminal groups of the SA chains undergo ring-opening reactions under alkaline conditions, leading to the formation of an α-dicarbonyl group at the chain ends. Notably, for the first time, we discovered that YSA solution (M/G = 1:2) can rapidly and easily cross-link with Mg2+ to form magnesium alginate (MgA) hydr

Construction and Evaluation of a 2 mm-Diameter Artificial Artery via a Cross-Linked Acellularized Matrix.

Constructing clinically viable tiny-diameter vascular grafts (inner diameter <3 mm) remains challenging. Here, we developed a dual-cross-linking strategy using oxidized chitosan (OCS) and oxidized konjac glucomannan (OKGM) to modify acellularized porcine peritoneum (APP), fabricating 2 mm-diameter grafts via spiral wrapping and microsuture, replicating native artery topography. Evaluations showed enhanced hemocompatibility, antithrombotic properties, endothelial compatibility, mechanical strength matching native vessels, anticalcification, component stability, antibacterial efficacy, and contr

Synthesis of aromatic glycoconjugates as anti-fungal agents against Candida spp. and assessment of their covalent crosslinking capabilities.

Covalent drugs are becoming increasingly attractive in drug discovery, as they can enhance potency and selectivity for their molecular targets. Covalent inhibitors have been investigated for several therapeutic applications, including anti-cancer and anti-infection agents. However, there are only a few examples of covalent inhibitors targeting fungal pathogens. We have previously reported aromatic glycoconjugates (AGCs) capable of inhibiting the adhesion of Candida albicans to buccal epithelial cells. In this work, we synthesize novel derivatives of the AGCs to which we have added reactive fun

Facile fabrication of a starch-based wood adhesive showcasing water resistance, flame retardancy, and antibacterial properties via a dual crosslinking strategy.

The demand for non-toxic, environmentally friendly, easily processable, water-resistant, flame-retardant and antimicrobial adhesives in the wood processing industry is becoming increasingly urgent. Few adhesives can possess these functions altogether while being synthesized easily. This paper presents a one-pot process utilizing corn starch, sodium hypochlorite, itaconic acid, and borax to synthesize a starch-based adhesive with dual crosslinking. Initial crosslinking takes place between the carboxyl groups of itaconic acid and hydroxyl groups on oxidized starch due to the formation of ester b

Wessely-type immune ring following collagen cross-linking.

A woman in her early 20s with progressive keratoconus underwent corneal collagen cross-linking using the sub400 protocol. The central 5.5 mm of the epithelium was removed after the application of 20% alcohol. Topical riboflavin 0.1% was applied every 3 min for 30 min and then irradiated with UV-A light (irradiance of 3 mW/cm2 for 16 min). At the end of the procedure, a therapeutic contact lens was placed and ofloxacin 0.3% (4 times daily), dexamethasone 0.1% (4 times daily) and lubricant (hourly) drops were prescribed. Two days after the procedure, the patient presented with a painless red eye.

Evaluation of plant-derived biomaterials for the development of tissue-engineered corneal substitutes.

Corneal blindness affects over 10 million patients worldwide. Due to the limited supply of donor corneas and frequent graft failure, bioengineered alternatives are crucial. To overcome drawbacks associated with corneal substitutes from synthetic biomaterials, fabrication from plant-derived biomaterials is a potential alternative. Herein, soy protein and glutenin in combination with different crosslinkers were evaluated for fabrication of corneal substitutes. Optical, mechanical, and biochemical properties of fabricated constructs and control rabbit corneas were evaluated in vitro. Soy protein

Preparation of chitosan resin by two-step crosslinking method and its adsorption for palladium in wastewater.

To preserve the activity of amine groups on chitosan, chitosan resin (CR) was synthesized using the reversed-phase suspension two-step crosslinking method for the adsorption of palladium from wastewater. The effects of varying the amounts of chitosan, liquid paraffin, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde solution, and epichlorohydrin on the adsorption capacity of CR were investigated using both single-factor experiments and response surface methodology. The preparation conditions for the chitosan resin were optimized, and its adsorption properties were systematically evaluated. The results indicated th

Competition between cross-linking and force-induced local conformational changes determines the structure and mechanics of labile protein networks.

Folded protein hydrogels are emerging as promising new materials for medicine and healthcare applications. Folded globular proteins can be modelled as colloids which exhibit site specific cross-linking for controlled network formation. However, folded proteins have inherent mechanical stability and unfolded in response to an applied force. It is not yet understood how colloidal network theory maps onto folded protein hydrogels and whether it models the impact of protein unfolding on network properties. To address this, we study a hybrid system which contains folded proteins (patchy colloids) a

Conjunctival Collagen Cross-Linking for the Treatment of Leaking Avascular Cystic Bleb.

Trabeculectomy is a primary surgical procedure used to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma. Despite its effectiveness, it can lead to significant complications, including hypotony, choroidal effusion, blebitis, and bleb leaks. Bleb leaks require prompt medical or surgical intervention to prevent severe complications such as blebitis and bleb-associated endophthalmitis. In recent years, the indications for collagen cross-linking (CCL) have expanded beyond corneal ectatic diseases to include various ocular conditions such as keratitis and leaking blebs. Here, we present t

Increased Collagen Crosslinking in Stiff Clubfoot Tissue: Implications for the Improvement of Therapeutic Strategies.

Congenital clubfoot is a complex musculoskeletal deformity, in which a stiff, contracted tissue forms in the medial part of the foot. Fibrotic changes are associated with increased collagen deposition and lysyl oxidase (LOX)-mediated crosslinking, which impair collagen degradation and increase the tissue stiffness. First, we studied collagen deposition, as well as the expression of collagen and the amount of pyridinoline and deoxypyridinoline crosslinks in the tissue of relapsed clubfoot by immunohistochemistry, real-time PCR, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We then isolated fib
