Development and Implementation of a Curriculum for Pediatric Trainees on Caring for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) are at risk for poor developmental outcomes related to incomplete language access. Evidence based interventions are available to improve early access to language. With a better understanding of caring for DHH children, pediatricians will be more prepared to work with families in improving outcomes for this population. To date, there are no formal curricula on educating pediatric trainees on childhood hearing differences. METHODS: The authors designed a novel pilot curriculum to educate pediatric trainees on caring for DHH children, …

Impact of a curriculum on internal medicine residents' outpatient management of severe hypertension at a VA primary care clinic.

We previously developed a curriculum on outpatient severe hypertension management for internal medicine residents and examined its impact on patient care at a Federally Qualified Health Center. Here we evaluate the curriculum's effects at a second site, a Veterans Affairs primary care clinic. We found the curriculum was associated with improved antihypertensive treatment intensification among clinicians who did vs. did not receive the curriculum.

Bridging a curriculum gap: a structured model for integrating head and neck ultrasound training into undergraduate dental education.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasonography is increasingly relevant in dental and maxillofacial diagnostics, yet structured training opportunities for dental students remain scarce. This study aimed to develop, implement, evaluate and validate a blended learning head and neck ultrasound (HNUS) curriculum for dental students, guided by the ICAP (Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive) framework and Kirkpatrick's evaluation model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Following Kern's six-step approach to curriculum development, a prospective quasi-experimental design was applied. Dental students (study group) complete…

Can hepatology lead the way? Synthesising current global curricula and proposing a model for an international specialty curriculum.

BACKGROUND: Increased understanding and treatments for liver disease have led in recent decades to the emergence of hepatology as a subspecialty within gastroenterology, and as a standalone medical specialty. Growing challenges in hepatology are a global problem, yet no global framework for education and training has been established. We therefore aim to conduct feasibility work to compare existing international curricula, examine the ability to merge existing frameworks and hypothesise a basis for a shared curriculum leading to a standardised global accreditation. METHOD: We employed a cross…

Designing for generalism, courage, and systems: a curriculum scholarship account of an integrated family medicine and primary care block.

BACKGROUND: Pre-clerkship Family Medicine teaching often covers content well but does too little with experiential immersion, structured reflection, and the open engagement with clinical uncertainty that defines generalist work in practice. We describe the partnership-based redesign of the COM353 Family Medicine and Primary Care block at Alfaisal University, Riyadh, with student-reported outcomes from the first delivered cohort. The paper is offered as a worked account of how academic-academic and academic-service partnerships can themselves become curriculum. PEDAGOGICAL FRAMEWORK: The redes…

Enhancing specialist competence in clinical pathways for left ventricular hypertrophy: design and evaluation of a competency-based curriculum.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a frequent clinical phenotype with diverse etiologies, including hypertensive heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and infiltrative or metabolic disorders. Despite the availability of disease-specific therapies, diagnostic delays and misclassifications remain prevalent. From a health services perspective, these diagnostic gaps are often driven by significant variability in specialist-level diagnostic reasoning and the inconsistent implementation of clinical pathways. To design and evaluate the feasibility of a competency-based curriculum…

Core curriculum for sedation in gastrointestinal endoscopy with a focus on practice: a proposal from the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Ideal sedation education for gastrointestinal endoscopy should encompass all medications used in sedation therapy, and facilitate appropriate application in clinical practice by combining theoretical and practical education according to each country's situation. The educational goals for endoscopic sedation in Korea have already been announced, and theoretical training is regularly conducted by the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (KSGE). However, no official core curriculum for sedation during gastrointestinal endoscopy exists in Korea. Therefore, a practical curriculum aligned wi…

The influence of the hidden curriculum on the risk of burnout in junior doctors in a palliative medicine rotation - a qualitative exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative Care (PC) provides person-centred care for patients with life-limiting diseases and their families. Studies have shown that healthcare professionals delivering PC are predisposed to moral distress and burnout due to constant exposure to death and dying and aspects of the hidden curriculum (HC) through which culture and values are transmitted implicitly. However, there are limited studies focusing on the latter through the lens of junior doctors. Using the Ring Theory of Personhood (RToP) and the Krishna-Pisupati Model (KPM), which categorize and map conflicts between per…

Collaboration in action: successful implementation of a learner-driven virtual interprofessional education curriculum in the clinical learning environment.

Though technological capabilities to provide high-quality, flexible interprofessional education (IPE) have continued to grow, this remains a largely undeveloped area in the clinical learning environment (CLE). To address this gap, the University of Minnesota launched the Collaboration in Action: Learner-Driven Curriculum (CIA-LDC) as an IPE model designed for sustainability in a post-pandemic world. Over the course of two academic years, the CIA-LDC framework evolved and expanded through an iterative, data-informed approach incorporating student feedback, academic programme co-creation, evolvi…

Support for a Weight-Inclusive Curriculum? Exploring Partner Perspectives and Influences on Nutrition Education in Vermont High Schools.

BACKGROUND: The weight-normative approach to nutrition education dominates health education programming across the United States, despite evidence that this paradigm contributes to negative outcomes including weight cycling, bias and stigma, the development of disordered eating behaviors, and weight-based bullying. METHODS: This study investigates perspectives of 10 potential partners with interest in and potential to influence nutrition education. Through qualitative interviews and document analysis, researchers explored support for a weight-inclusive curriculum and factors that influence hi…
