Infantile Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy: Indications, Anatomical Considerations, and Outcomes.

The purpose of this case series is to report the demographic profile, indications, anatomical considerations, and outcomes of Endonasal endoscopic DCR in the infants. Five eyes of 3 infants underwent IEnDCR with a mean age of 4.26 months (range: 23 days-8 months). There were 2 males and 1 female. Two of the infants underwent bilateral surgery. The indication for surgery in the infant undergoing unilateral surgery was recurrent acute dacryocystitis and lacrimal abscess formation secondary to refractory and complex congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Infants undergoing bilateral lacrimal s…

Successful endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy in a patient with Wegener's granulomatosis.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is one form of idiopathic autoimmune vasculitis. The disease has a predilection for the upper and lower respir … ateral extensive adhesions in the nasal cavity. Because she had several episodes of left-side acute dacryocystitis which necessitated several courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics, she successfully underwent an endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy using a diode laser and powered instrumentation. The authors describe the clinical case, the surgical techniqu …

Dacryoliths in a series of dacryocystorhinostomies: histologic and chemical analysis.

PURPOSE: To present the clinical and intraoperative characteristics of dacryolith cases, to present their histologic and chemical analysis, and to relate the findings with the probable causes of their formation in a series of dacryocystorhinostomies performed in northern Greece. METHODS: In a series of 242 dacryocystorhinostomies in patients with chronic dacryocystitis, dacryoliths large enough to perform an accurate chemical analysis and a light histologic examination were found in five cases. The chemical analysis was based on atomic absorption spectrophotometry and atomic emission spectrom…

[Clinical manifestations of orbital lesion in granulomatosis with polyangiitis].

UNLABELLED: One of the most common and potentially threatening manifestations of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is orbital lesion. PURPOSE: To study the clinical course and prognosis of orbital lesions of various localization in GPA patients. Material and me-thods. The study included 226 patients with GPA, 74 of them with orbital lesion. Ophthalmic examination consisted of visual acuity test, biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy, exophthalmometry and ocular mobility test. Visualization was done using multislice computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance tomography and/or ultrasound examin

Clinical impact of inflammation in dry eye disease: proceedings of the ODISSEY group meeting.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a common, multifactorial ocular condition with major impact on vision and quality of life. It is now well recognized that the pathophysiology of chronic DED can include a cycle of inflammation involving both innate and adaptive immune responses. Recently, in vitro/in vivo models have been used to obtain a better understanding of DED-related inflammatory processes at molecular/cellular levels although they do not truly reproduce the complex and chronic hallmarks of human DED. In clinical DED research, advanced techniques such as impression cytology, conjunctival biopsy,

Sarcoidosis presenting with acute dacryoadenitis.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disorder, pathologically characterized by noncaseating epithelioid granulomas. We report a case of the disease that presented with acute dacryoadenitis followed by acute parotitis.

[Ultrasound diagnosis of the lacrimal sack].

A- und B-scan echography is a useful method for the examination of certain parts of the lacrimal drainage system. In most cases it can substitute for dacryocystography and other expensive methods in the diagnosis of lacrimal sac diseases. Older methods of echography for examination of the lacrimal sac are direct contact, water bath, and rarely transocular contact methods. We have developed a new method, in which a rubber tube filled with fluid is placed between the transducer and the skin surface. Comparison of these methods demonstrates that this is the best method for ultrasound diagnostics

Lacrimal drainage system inflammatory masses from retained silicone tubing.

In two cases studied we found inflammatory masses of the lacrimal system associated with retained silicone material. We saw the first patient two years after a failed dacryocystorhinostomy. A mass of the superior punctum mimicking a lacrimal sac or canalicular neoplasm consisted of chronic granulomatous inflammation centered around retained silicone tubing. In the second patient, a foreign body giant cell inflammatory reaction occurred in the lacrimal sac in which there were retained knots of silicone tubing. We believed the inflammation in these patients to be caused by the knots and the cut

A rare case of infantile dacryoadenitis: a case report.

A 10-month-old boy, otherwise healthy, presented with significant left upper eyelid edema, erythema, and near-complete ptosis. He was afebrile and nontoxic. Examination revealed an inflamed lacrimal gland, with no other orbital signs. There was mild leukocytosis and elevated ESR and CRP. Intravenous ampicillin/sulbactam was initiated. Forty-eight hours later, the contralateral eyelid developed similar symptoms. Blood cultures, respiratory viral panel, COVID-19 antigen, and EBV serologies were negative. Orbital imaging revealed moderate bilateral lacrimal gland enlargement without abscess or ot

Chronic bilateral dacryoadenitis caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dacryoadenitis is inflammation of the lacrimal gland, mainly caused by viral infection. It can also be caused by bacterial pathogens and non-infectious processes such as auto-immune diseases and malignancy. Chronic dacryoadenitis is rarely linked to SARS-CoV-2 infection, with only five reports in the literature. REPORT: A 26-year-old Arab woman experienced chronic inflammatory dacryoadenitis after a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, which was successfully treated with oral prednisone. CONCLUSIONS: Dacryoadenitis can occur due to inflammation caused by either SARS-CoV-2 exposure. The tre

Ultrasonography of IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis: Imaging features and clinical usefulness.

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the ultrasonographic features of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis (IgG4-DS) and their usefulness in clinical diagnostic sessions. METHODS: By re-evaluating 96 consecutive patients with IgG4-related disease, we identified 54 patients (male:female = 37:17; median age, 69.5 years) who underwent lacrimal or submandibular gland (LG or SG, respectively) ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). Their clinical and ultrasonographic features were retrospectively analysed. Radio-pathological correlations were also examined in LG (23 cases) and

Dacryoadenitis Associated With Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

A 14-year-old female with juvenile idiopathic arthritis presented with left-sided recurrent painful periorbital swelling of 5 months duration. MRI revealed enlargement of the left lacrimal gland with extensive inflammatory change involving the orbital and periorbital soft tissues. Lacrimal gland biopsy showed evidence of chronic inflammation, and she had intralesional steroid injection at the time of biopsy. She remained asymptomatic at 6-month follow-up visit. Although juvenile idiopathic arthritis is usually related to intraocular inflammation, it may rarely be associated with dacryoadenitis
