Thirty-seven patients with thoracic and lumbar spine fractures were treated with Harrington rod instrumentation (HRI), and the progress and results of that surgery were monitored with intraoperative spinal sonography (IOSS). Adequate neural tissue decompression and spinal column alignment was achieved in less than one-half (14/31, 45%) of the patients in whom HRI was performed as the first step of the surgical procedure. As a result of these findings, further surgical maneuvers were performed which, in most cases, resulted in adequate spinal realignment and neural tissue decompression. In six

To compare the efficacy and safety of different surgical procedures for patients with single-segment lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted in this study. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which reported 2 years' results after surgery were searched from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials up to February 2021. Eligible RCTs that contained at least two of the following surgical procedures, bilateral decompression via the unilateral approach (BDUL), decompression with conventional laminectomy (CL), decompression with fusion (DF),

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic spinal epidural lipomatosis (SEL) of the lumbar spine is a rare disease, often associated with steroid overload. Idiopathic lipomatosis is even much less frequent. Signs and symptoms depend upon the level and degree of nerve root compression. Diagnosis is best based on MRI. Weight reduction can be curative, however after failure of medical treatment or in severe cases surgical decompression should be performed.
METHOD: Four patients with severe symptoms of lumbar spinal epidural lipomatosis were treated by surgical decompression. Patient history and neurological examin

Spinal disease is an important cause of cervical discomfort, low back pain, radiating pain in the limbs, and neurogenic intermittent claudication, and its incidence is increasing annually. From the etiological viewpoint, these symptoms are directly caused by the compression of the spinal cord, nerve roots, and blood vessels and are most effectively treated with surgery. Spinal surgeries are primarily performed using two different techniques: spinal canal decompression and internal fixation. In the past, tactile sensation was the primary method used by surgeons to understand the state of the ti

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of a nationwide sample database.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to compare the long-term incidence of reoperation for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) after anterior fusion, posterior fusion, and decompression.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Surgical treatment for LSS can be largely divided into 2 categories: decompression only and decompression with fusion. A previous nationwide study reported that fusion surgery was performed in 10% of patients with LSS, and the 10-year reoperation rate was approximately 17%. However, with the developmen

Microvascular decompression is a widely accepted surgical treatment for compressive cranial nerve pathologies such as trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and other craniofacial pain syndromes. Endoscopy has risen as a safe and effective minimally invasive tool to optimize microvascular decompression. Endoscopy offers improved visualization, minimizes retraction, and allows for smaller surgical openings compared to traditional microscopic approaches. There are several reports of improved neuralgia outcomes and reduced post-operative complications after endoscopic

The rationale for microsurgical decompression is to maximize neural decompression while minimizing the destabilization and resection of uninvolved structures. Microsurgical decompression is appropriate for most degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis because the pathoanatomy tends to be concentrated at the levels of the disk space and foramen. Careful preoperative analysis of the imaging studies will guide the surgeon to the most appropriate method of decompression for a particular patient and help focus the decompression to the appropriate regions. Thorough knowledge of surgical spinal anatomy is

BACKGROUND: Orbital decompression surgery is frequently the last therapeutic measure in the surgical treatment of endocrine orbitopathy (EO). Additional rehabilitative and corrective surgical treatments are often used to improve the resulting eyelid stigmata, such as an increased lid aperture and scleral show. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of adjunctive surgical procedures after orbital decompression surgery in patients with EO.
METHODS: A total of 120 orbitae from 65 patients with EO from 2010 to 2020 at a tertiary care center in Germany were retrospectively evaluated. Ocul

Surgical procedures for the treatment of ulnar nerve compression at the elbow are well described. Studies have reported clinical outcomes after decompression of the nerve without transposition and decompression with transposition. Numerous preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative factors contribute to failure of the surgical procedures. Although the techniques available for revision decompression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow are similar to those used in the primary setting, the results after repeat surgical intervention are less predictable.

OBJECTIVE: Although low back pain is a common symptom in adolescents, the etiology of the pain is frequently unknown. One cause of low back pain that is not widely considered in adolescents and young adults is superior cluneal nerve entrapment syndrome (SCNES). This study describes this disorder in adolescents and young adults and their outcomes after surgical decompression. Methodology: This is a retrospective case series of 10 patients who underwent surgical decompression of the nerve at a single institution from 2018 to 2020.
RESULTS: All patients with both preoperative and postoperative

INTRODUCTION: While earlier decompression after spinal cord injury (SCI) is linked to better motor recovery, its impact on bladder and sexual function remains unexplored. Our objective was to determine if time to surgical decompression is associated with bladder and sexual function.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the prospectively collected Canadian Rick Hansen SCI Registry. Primary exposure was time to surgical decompression. Primary outcome was abnormal bladder function defined by use of catheters or any incontinence at 1-year. Secondary outcomes were sexual functi

Therapy for spinal stenosis remains difficult. The possibilities for conservative management are limited and not satisfactory in the more severe cases. Various surgical procedures are possible, such as decompression, decompression and fusion without instrumentation and decompression and fusion with instrumentation. The aim of our meta-analysis was to compare the postoperative results of these three surgical techniques in the literature and, thus, to establish a treatment of choice for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis. Via Medline, 30 articles met the inclusion criteria for our study, leadin

PURPOSE: Since 1911, when Dollinger first described surgical orbital decompression, many different techniques and approaches have been described, including 1-, 2-, and 3-wall decompressions with orbital fat removal. The indications for surgical treatment have been widened and include additional to optic neuropathy severe proptosis causing exposure keratopathy and disfigurement. Popular techniques for surgical decompression are the transantral or transpalpebral approach to the medial wall and orbital floor. Sometimes theses approaches are combined with lateral canthotomy incisions for access to

BACKGROUND: Spinal stenosis is a common disease with an increasing incidence. Narrowing of the spinal canal is caused by bone and soft tissue degeneration, such as osteophyte formation, facet and ligamentum flavum hypertrophy, and disc herniation. Various surgical techniques have been used to treat spinal canal stenosis, including open, tubular, microsurgical decompression, and fusion surgery. This article presents the technique for full-endoscopic interlaminar bilateral decompression of the lumbar spine.
METHODS: Surgical approach, anatomy, pathology, indications, contraindications, and surg

PURPOSE: To review the advances in the surgical techniques of orbital decompression.
METHODS: A literature review of orbital decompression surgery and experience-based consideration of bony areas for decompression.
RESULTS: In the 100-year-plus span of orbital decompression literature, multiple incisions and multiple bone and fat removal strategies have been described. In general, bone removal has been conceptualized as consisting of 4 walls of the orbit. However, the orbital bony anatomy is more subtle than a simple box, and considering 6 areas of potential bony removal allows a more nuance
