Early orthodontic treatment: a new index to assess the risk of malocclusion in primary dentition.

AIM: A new index targeted on the risk of malocclusions in primary dentition, called Baby-ROMA (Risk Of Malocclusion Assessment) index, was set up to assess risks/benefits in early orthodontic therapies. The Baby-ROMA index was designed from the observation that some of the malocclusion signs, observed in primary dentition, can worsen with growth, others remain the same over time and others can even improve. Therefore it would be important to classify the malocclusions observed at an early stage on a risk- based scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The reliability of the index was tested on 200 child…

Assessing the association of taurodontism with numeric dentition anomalies in an adult central Indian population.

AIM: To study the association between taurodontism and numeric anomalies in adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 1,012; 946 panoramic radiographs and dental records were retrospectively assessed to determine the presence of dental agenesis and supernumerary and taurodont teeth. RESULTS: Taurodontism of one or more teeth was observed in 164 cases (97 females and 67 males). Hypodontia was observed in 148 patients (84 females and 64 males) with 62 patients having associated taurodontism (38 females, 24 males), oligodontia in 12 patients (five females and seven males) of whom nine pat

The primary and mixed dentition, post-eruptive enamel maturation and dental caries: a review.

The mouth is in flux from the time the primary teeth begin to erupt, in the first year of life, through to the end of the 'mixed dentition' (i.e. the concurrent eruption of the permanent teeth and exfoliation of the primary teeth), at around 12 years of age. Primary teeth facilitate the development of the facial muscles and speech. They act as 'guides' for erupting permanent teeth. If lost prematurely, subsequent misalignment of permanent teeth can make them difficult to clean and possibly more caries-prone. During the mixed dentition phase, teeth are at relatively high risk of caries. Eruptin…

Medial mandibulotomies: is there sufficient space in the midline to allow a mandibulotomy without compromising the dentition?

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of complications in median and paramedian mandibulotomies. In addition, the interdental space in the median and paramedian region was calculated. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Tertiary care center. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all cases where a mandibulotomy was performed from 2002 to 2010. 117 charts (61 paramedian and 56 median) were identified. We included data on complications, which fell in the following 2 categories: plate and dental complications. For our second objective,

A conservative approach in the management of inflammatory dentigerous cyst in transitional dentition: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts that develop from the reduced enamel epithelium related to the crown of an unerupted and/or impacted tooth. Inflammatory dentigerous cyst is a variety of dentigerous cyst that is mostly found in the mixed dentition, and the treatment modalities range from enucleation to marsupialization. By extracting the infected primary teeth, opening the cyst, and ensuring continuous drainage, spontaneous eruption of the involved permanent teeth occurs into the dental arch even if they are severely dislocated. The purpose of this report is to describe the succe…

Three-dimensional analysis of dentolabial relationships: effect of age and sex in healthy dentition.

Morphological changes in three-dimensional (3D) dentolabial relationships during ageing were assessed in healthy individuals. 38 subjects with healthy dentition were analysed. They were divided into a youthful group (21-34 years, mean 26 years, SD 4) and an older group (45-65 years, mean 53 years, SD 5). Stone labial and dental models were made, digitized and 3D virtual reproductions of dentolabial morphology were obtained. From the digital reconstructions, the relative positions of the labial commissure and of the maxillary dental clinical crowns in the vertical direction were obtained. Sex a…

Balancing the spatial demands of the developing dentition with the mechanical demands of the catarrhine mandibular symphysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The superior transverse torus of the catarrhine mandible has been shown to effectively reduce bending at the symphysis during unilateral pos … yseal morphology throughout ontogeny between biomechanics and the spatial demands of the developing dentition. Based on the findings we therefore propose that the spatial requirements of the developing incisors during ontogeny can act as a constraint on the functional adaptation and subsequent adult morphology observed in the catarrhine mandibular symphysis …

Apgar score and dental caries risk in the primary dentition of five year olds.

BACKGROUND: Conditions in utero and early life underlie risk for several childhood disorders. This study tested the hypothesis that the Apgar score predicted dental caries in the primary dentition. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study conducted in 2003 examined associations between conditions at birth and early life with dental caries experience at five years. Dental examination data for a random sample of five-year-old South Australian children were obtained from School Dental Service electronic records. A questionnaire mailed to the parents obtained information about neonatal status at del…

Idiopathic root resorption of the entire permanent dentition: systematic review and report of a case.

A rare case of idiopathic root resorption affecting the entire dentition was described. Root resorptions of all of the maxillary and mandibular teeth were coincidentally diagnosed on patient's radiographic examination. The patient's medical and dental findings were non-contributory, other than the increased mobility of upper incisors. No significant familial findings could be identified. Detailed radiographic examination revealed resorption affecting the apical part of the roots, resulting in vertical shortening of the teeth. The character of the resorption was as if a tapering occurred throug…

Multiple lesions of intracoronal resorption of permanent teeth in the developing dentition: a case report.

The purpose of this case report is to describe an unusual presentation of multiple lesions of intracoronal resorption in the permanent teeth in a healthy boy. Longitudinal radiographs demonstrated that all 3 lesions were acquired after the crowns were completely formed. Unlike previous reports in which intracoronal radiolucencies have been found in unerupted teeth or in newly erupting teeth, one lesion in this case developed in a fully erupted tooth, which was differentiated from internal resorption and invasive cervical resorption of the root. All were considered idiopathic external resorptio

Correlations between dentition anomalies and diseases of the of the postural and movement apparatus--a literature review.

From anatomic and functional aspects the stomatognathic system and the upper cervical spine are closely interlinked. Together with complex neuromuscular relationships, this gives rise to an important field of cooperation between orthodontics and orthopedics. The literature appeals for close interdisciplinary cooperation for patients with syndromes and for those with torticollis and scoliosis. Since orthopedic points of contact are obvious in these special cases, orthopedic aspects are now being taken increasingly into account in farther-reaching studies. With the rising popularity of manual me

Dentin dysplasia type I: report of atypical cases in the permanent and mixed dentitions.

Dentin dysplasia type I is a rare hereditary disturbance of dentin formation characterized clinically by nearly normal appearing crowns and severe hypermobility of teeth. Radiographic analysis shows obliteration of all pulp chambers, short, blunted, and malformed roots, and periapical radiolucencies of noncarious teeth. This paper presents 2 cases demonstrating both classic and atypical features of type I dentin dysplasia in the mixed and permanent dentitions. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic\findings of this condition and treatment are described.

The compensatory mechanism in high-angle malocclusions: a comparison of subjects in the mixed and permanent dentition.

Dentoskeletal morphology was assessed in 191 untreated and unselected children with a hyperdivergent (high-angle) mandibular plane (ML/NSL > or =40 degrees) by analyzing lateral roentgenographic cephalograms. The subjects were divided into mixed dentition and permanent dentition groups, and further divided into subgroups based on the amount of overbite (OB) as a measure of dentoalveolar compensation of jaw base hyperdivergency: OB < 0 mm (openbite) = insufficient/no compensation; OB 0 to 4 mm (normal overbite) = acceptable compensation; OB > 4 mm (deepbite) = overcompensation. Openbite was obs…
