BACKGROUND: Several lines of research suggest a disturbance of reversal learning (reward and punishment processing, and affective switching) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is also characterized by abnormal reversal learning, and is often co-morbid with MDD. However, neurobiological distinctions between the disorders are unclear. Functional neuroimaging (activation) studies comparing MDD and OCD directly are lacking.
METHOD: Twenty non-medicated OCD-free patients with MDD, 20 non-medicated MDD-free patients with OCD, and 27 healthy control…

Rumination in response to negative affect has been found to predict the onset, severity, and duration of depressive symptoms. Few researchers, however, have considered rumination within bipolar disorder, nor have studies considered parallel responses that might intensify positive affect. The current study examined self-reported rumination in response to both negative and positive affect among people diagnosed via the SCID with BPD (n = 28), major depressive disorder (MDD; n = 35), or no mood disorder (n = 44). Participants completed the Ruminative Response Scale and the Responses to Positive A…

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate whether patients with bipolar depression and patients with recurrent depressive disorder present with different subtypes of depressive episode as according to ICD-10.
SAMPLING AND METHODS: All patients who got a diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder, current episode of depression, or a diagnosis of recurrent depressive disorder, current episode of depression, in a period from 1994 to 2002 at the first outpatient treatment or at the first discharge from psychiatric hospitalization in Denmark were identified in a nationwide register.

OBJECTIVE: Both major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD) exhibit an illness-related functional cerebral laterality with a frontal right/left asymmetry. Using experimental pain lateralization as a putative indicator of functional cerebral laterality, we assessed body side differences in pressure, cold and heat pain thresholds in patients with MDD and PD as well as in healthy control subjects (HC). To control for an attentional bias in perception, reaction times for selective attention were also measured for both visual fields.
METHOD: 21 inpatients with MDD, 21 inpatients with P…

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) often is a recurrent and chronic disorder. We investigated the neurocognitive underpinnings of the incremental risk for poor disease course by exploring relations between enduring depression and brain functioning during regulation of negative and positive emotions using cognitive reappraisal. We used fMRI-data from the longitudinal Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety acquired during an emotion regulation task in 77 individuals with MDD. Task-related brain activity was related to disease load, calculated from presence and severity of depression in the pre…

Previous studies have shown that various factors, such as genetic and environmental factors, contribute to the development of major depressive disorder (MDD). The aim of this study is to clarify how multiple factors, including affective temperaments, childhood abuse and adult life events, are involved in the severity of depressive symptoms in MDD. A total of 98 participants with MDD were studied using the following self-administered questionnaire surveys: Patient Health Questionnaire-9 measuring the severity of depressive symptoms; Life Experiences Survey (LES) measuring negative and positive …

Depressive disorder is a highly prevalent psychiatric condition that imposes substantial psychological burden on patients and their families, as well as significant economic costs to society. A close relationship exists between depressive disorders and abnormalities in olfactory function, and depressive disorders are frequently accompanied by marked impairments in social functioning. Patients exhibit dysfunction across multiple dimensions of olfactory processing, including olfactory sensitivity, identification, discrimination, and memory, and these abnormalities are influenced by symptom sever…

BACKGROUND: Episode duration, recurrence rates, and time spent in manic and depressive phases of bipolar disorder (BD) is not well defined for subtypes of the disorder.
METHODS: We reviewed the course, timing, and duration of episodes of mania and depression among 1130 clinically treated DSM-IV-TR BD patients of various types, and compared duration and rates as well as total proportion of time in depressive versus manic episodes during 16.7 average years at risk.
RESULTS: As expected, episodes of depressions were much longer than manias, but episode-duration did not differ among BD diagnosti

Many reviews exist about the use of psychotropic in children with depression (American academy of child and adolescent psychiatry en 2007 [Aacap] 2007, Food and drug administration [FDA] 2004, Afssaps 2008). Antidepressants are the most important long-term treatment: only fluoxetine has been effective and is authorised in France since August 2006. The risk of suicidality and sexual maturation alteration need to be control. Psychotherapy is needed to involve efficacy and tolerability treatment. Other IRS and IRSNA are used, but another study must be conducted in currently practice condition.

Extract: Bipolar disorder is one of the most distinct syndromes in psychiatry and has been described in numerous cultures over the course of history, in a manner that suggests considerable similarity of the syndrome in time and place. The unique phase of the illness is mania. However, depression can be the most prominent phase and the ratio of depressions to manias over the life course of the illness is highly variable. Depression in a bipolar disorder is a syndrome that can be understood by any human being, as all of us have experienced sadness and there are at least some commonalities betwee

This study assessed the frequency of impulse control disorders (ICDs) and their association with bulimia, compulsive buying, and suicide attempts in a population of depressed inpatients. We investigated ICDs using the Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview. Patients answered the Zuckerman Sensation-Seeking Scale and the Barratt Impulsivity Rating Scale. Among the 31 depressed patients who met criteria for ICD (ICD+ group), we found 18 cases of intermittent explosive disorder, three cases of pathological gambling, four cases of kleptomania, three cases of pyromania, and three cases of trichoti

We compared alexithymia and depression ratings for non-hospitalized women meeting DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa (n=32) and bulimia nervosa (n=32) to ratings for healthy women (n=74). Alexithymia was evaluated by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and depression by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). TAS and HAD scores were significantly higher in anorexic compared to bulimic patients, although these two scales were significantly and positively correlated (r=0.53, P=0.001). After taking depression into account as a confounding variable, rates of alexithymia did not vary

The goal of the present study was to investigate the clinical profile of patients with primary headache syndromes who also suffer from mood disorders. Four-hundred-and-seventy headache outpatients (170M, 300F) and 150 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were screened using a specific questionnaire that included the Hamilton rating scales for anxiety and depression. The average scores of the Hamilton rating scales for anxiety and depression were significantly higher in headache sufferers (17.4 and 14.2, respectively) than in healthy people (6.8 and 5.7, respectively). The frequency of headach

Dysthymic disorder is defined as chronic depression of a mild to moderate degree for at least two years' duration. The disorder tends to be underdiagnosed despite a prevalence of 5 to 15 percent in primary care settings. Both the diagnosis and treatment of dysthymic disorder may be complicated by a variety of comorbid psychiatric and medical conditions as well as chronic stressors. Treatment may be determined by the accompanying comorbid condition. Antidepressant drugs are moderately efficacious in the treatment of dysthymia, with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors preferred over tricycli

Alcoholics frequently experience episodes of intense depression and/or severe anxiety. Depressed or anxious alcohol-dependent people often believe that they drink to relieve symptoms of sadness or nervousness. However, research does not unanimously support the prior existence of severe depressive or anxiety disorders as a usual cause of alcoholism. A review of recent literature (from family studies, prospective investigations, and studies of children of alcoholics) on the complex interaction between alcohol dependence and independent anxiety/depressive disorders reveals that if an association …
