S1 guideline on occupational skin products: protective creams, skin cleansers, skin care products (ICD 10: L23, L24)--short version.

Job-related hand dermatitis heads up the list of reported occupational diseases. So-called skin products - understood to mean protective creams, skin cleansers and skin care products - are used for the primary and secondary prevention of job- related hand dermatitis. In the interests of evidence-based medicine, the only preventive measures and/or occupational skin products that should be used are those whose potential uses and efficacy are underpinned by scientific research. To this end, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Berufs- und Umweltdermatologie e.V. (Working Group for Occupational and Environ

Hazard identification and the prevalence of occupational skin disease in Indonesian Batik workers.

Batik, a resist-dyeing technique to decorate a special cotton fabric, has been practiced for centuries in Indonesia. Unfortunately, as an informal enterprise, batik industry activities lack work safety and health regulations. This study aimed to identify potential health hazards, including inventorying the chemicals to which the workers are exposed, the PPE profile, and investigating the prevalence of occupational skin diseases (OSD) in the batik industry. A cross-sectional study and an inventory of exposure to the chemicals were done in traditional batik workplaces in 5 districts in Yogyakart

Contact allergy in Singapore.

Contact allergy, viz. allergic contact dermatitis, photo-allergic contact dermatitis and contact urticaria, is a well-studied sub-specialty of dermatology in Singapore. Over the years, numerous studies and anecdotal reports on the subject have been published in both international and local refereed journals. This article reviews the epidemiological data on patch testing and photo-patch testing in Singapore. It also summarizes published clinical reports on important contact allergens that are found in both non-occupational and occupational setting.

Skin protection in the food industry.

In food occupations, like in many other skin risk occupations, the regular use of personal protection equipment, i.e. of skin protection ointments and protective gloves, is recommended as well as regular skin care for the prevention of occupational hand dermatitis. We investigated the uptake and maintenance of different prevention strategies (instructions for skin protection and skin care, prevocational skin hardening with UV light) in food occupations and their efficacy in the primary prevention of vocationally caused hand dermatitis. We could show that the acceptance and regular use of skin

Hand eczema, atopic dermatitis and filaggrin mutations in adult Danes: a registry-based study assessing risk of disability pension.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis and hand eczema often impair the ability of people to work. Only a few studies have investigated whether individuals with loss-of-function filaggrin gene (FLG) mutations, who often have severe and early onset of dermatitis, experience occupational consequences. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the personal consequences of having atopic dermatitis and/or hand eczema and FLG mutations. METHOD: Adult Danes from the general population (n = 3247) and patients with atopic dermatitis and/or hand eczema (n = 496) were genotyped for common FLG mutations, and completed a questio

[Allergic contact dermatitis to cobalt and nickel in a metal industry worker. Case report and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis is an eczematous skin reaction that is caused by repeated and direct exposure to an allergen: The prevalence of contact dermatitis to nickel is estimated at 17% in women and 3% in men, and 1-3% of the general population has allergic contact dermatitis to cobalt and chromium. Nickel, which is the leading cause of occupational dermatitis, shows reactivity to other metals; mainly chromium and cobalt. CLINICAL CASE: A 47-year old man, with previous sensitization to nickel in childhood, is a worker in the metal industry, with occupational exposure to nickel and cobal

Relation between diagnoses on severity, sick leave and loss of job among patients with occupational hand eczema.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies indicate that occupational hand eczema (OHE) often is associated with persistent dermatitis and prolonged sick leave, which may lead to unemployment. Previous studies suggest that OHE caused by allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis (AD) carries the worst prognosis. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the severity and consequences of recognized OHE in different diagnostic and subdiagnostic groups. METHODS: Between October 2001 and November 2002, all new cases of recognized OHE were identified from the Danish National Board of Industrial Injuries

Dermatitis in hairdressers.

Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers is a common clinical dermatologic problem. Apparently often secondary to irritant contact dermatitis caused by shampooing in Europe, in North America, allergic contact dermatitis related to the chemicals handled, especially oxidation dyes and permanent waving components, is not infrequently the problem. The preponderance of women in the clinical populations reported may well explain the relation noted between a positive patch-test response to nickel and the presence of contact dermatitis in hairdressers rather than nickel allergy predisposing to

Dermato-allergological risks in beauty operators.

Beauticians, hairdressers, and barbers are among the occupations with the highest rates of work-related skin diseases, especially occupational contact dermatitis (OCD). Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) due to chronic mild trauma (frictional dermatitis), contact with soaps, detergents, and wet work is frequent in beauty operators. Para-phenylenediamine (PPD), acrylates, essential oils, fragrances, colophony, and preservatives are most frequently responsible for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in these professional categories. Young women are mainly affected, with the most affected sites bein

Occupational contact allergy caused by rubber gloves--nothing has changed.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis caused by rubber gloves is not infrequent, and has almost exclusively been attributed to contact sensitization to accelerators. Thiurams have been the most frequent allergens, followed by dithiocarbamates. OBJECTIVES: To describe the current allergen pattern in patients with occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by rubber gloves. METHODS: This study was a retrospective analysis of data from the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK), 2002-2010. RESULTS: Of 93 615 patients patch tested in the IVDK, 3448 both suffered from oc

[UV radiation as occupational environmental damage (author's transl)].

The authors treat the problem of the skin damages produced by the UV-rays as an occupational hazard. An antiopathogenetic parallel with the other light dermatoses is discussed. 6836 cases with solar keratoses and 3816 with skin cancer are described; 47% of solar keratosis and 43% with skin cancer can be related to the occupational environment. 160 cases with "Kusbas"-Dermatitis, 20 cases with toxic melanodermitis, six with photoallergic dermatitis caused by largactyl and nine with solar urticaria are discussed in connection with their pathogenesis.
