The impact of clinical nutrition on inflammatory skin diseases.

The influence of nutrition on the pathophysiology and clinical severity of inflammatory facial dermatoses such as acne, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and perioral dermatitis has been controversially discussed for years. As part of a modern treatment approach, clinicians should provide patients with information on how their choice of diet might impact their dermatologic diagnosis and could potentially enhance therapeutic outcome. Recently, the concept of a gut-skin axis has gained momentum in the understanding of inflammatory dermatoses, with nutrition considered a contributing factor in this

In vitro activity of lithium succinate against Malassezia furfur.

OBJECTIVE: The in vitro antifungal activity of lithium succinate has been evaluated against 46 different Malassezia furfur strains, isolated from patients suffering from dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and pityriasis versicolor. METHODS: Minimum inhibitory concentrations of lithium succinate were measured by the agar dilution technique. RESULTS: Lithium succinate was found to be able to inhibit growth of all investigated M. furfur isolates in vitro but at much higher concentrations than those which are normally used for susceptibility testing. Minimum inhibitory concentrations between 1,250

Real-World Analysis of Inflammatory Dermatologic Conditions and Their Association With Keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether inflammatory skin conditions-including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, urticaria, and rosacea-are associated with an increased risk of keratoconus (KC). METHODS: We used data from the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network, which aggregates electronic health records from approximately 165 million patients across 19 countries. Adults aged 18 to 40 years diagnosed with each inflammatory skin condition (with no history of corneal disorders) between April 1, 2016, and August 1, 2019, were matched 1:1 with controls on demographics

[Malassezia related diseases].

Genusmalassezia are now divided to fourteen species. Different species will start or aggravate different skin diseases. In the seborrheic dermatitis, M.restricta will play an important role, in the atopic dermatitis, M.globosa and/or M.restricta are major cutaneous microflora. The availability of new tools such as genomic and proteomic analyses has begun to provide a new insight into the pathogenetic mechanisms involved.

Management of the ear canal seborrhea with cerumen.

For the past 20 years, the author has been treating recurrent chronic seborrheic dermatitis with a suspension of human cerumen in glycerine. The cerumen is obtained from healthy children and young adults in which there is an over-production which requires removal. If the cerumen contains debris it is not used. The collected cerumen is suspended in 50% glycerine and left for several weeks to sterilize. It is then strained through a fine filter having been heated so that its is workable. The material is dispensed to the patient in a small dropper bottle and the patient is instructed to place two

[The correlation between the levels of anti-Malassezia furfur IgE antibodies and severities of face and neck dermatitis of patients with atopic dermatitis].

It is well known that the seborrheic areas including the face and neck of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are frequently affected after adolescence. Malassezia furfur (MF), a lipophilic yeast and a normal habitat of seborrheic areas, has been thought to be one of the most important factors in provoking face and neck lesions of AD. In the present study, we assessed serum levels of anti-MF IgE antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (AlaSTAT method) in 123 adolescent and adult AD patients and evaluated the correlations between levels of anti-MF IgE and those of total IgE and some ot

The Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Management of Chronic Inflammatory Skin Diseases.

Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and irritant contact dermatitis comprise a large proportion of chronic inflammatory dermatoses. This paper reviews the clinical presentations, pathophysiology, and therapeutics of inflammatory dermatoses, highlighting recent drug developments such as lebrikizumab for atopic dermatitis as well as deucravacitinib and spesolimab for psoriasis. Chronic inflammatory dermatoses significantly impact patient quality of life and contribute to substantial healthcare costs. Effective management of severe cases ofte

[Diagnosis of eczema. Can you recognize what your patient's symptom?].

The term eczema is applied to specific non-infectious inflammatory reactions of the skin, and covers a number of etiologically highly heterogeneous conditions which, however, demonstrate common features in terms of clinical presentation and pathogenesis. Eczematous disorders account for approximately 20% of the dermatological disturbances. They include allergic, contact and irritant contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, nummular-microbial and dyshidrotic eczema, and stasis eczema. They have a high individual and socio-economic impact, and are dependent on individual pre…

[Occupational Dermatoses in Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Narrative Review].

INTRODUCTION: On the 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic. Preventive measures such as the appropriate use of personal protective equipment and proper hand hygiene are essential in decreasing transmissibility. Healthcare workers have been required to wear personal protective equipment and to wash their hands even more frequently. These preventive measures are associated with an increased risk of skin conditions, namely, contact dermatitis and exacerbation of pre-existing skin lesions such as acne and seborrheic dermatitis. The aim

Successful treatment of erythematous-squamous disorders of the external auditory canal with tacrolimus and clotrimazole in otic oil: Our experience in 25 patients.

The external auditory canal (EAC) comprises a special area where erythematous-scaly diseases are located. Among the main dermatoses that can affect EAC seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, chronic external otitis (atrial eczematoid dermatitis) and cutaneous lupus should be considered. In this study, 25 consecutive patients were recruited on our dermatological outpatient clinic, 9 men and 16 women, with a clinical diagnosis of localized erythematous-squamous dermatoses in EAC. The mean age was 48.8 years (16-83). The mean time of evolution of the dermatoses
