True ileal amino acid digestibility and digestible indispensable amino acid scores (DIAASs) of plant-based protein foods.

Plant-based protein foods are increasingly common, but data on their nutritional protein quality are scarce. This study evaluated it for seitan (wheat-based food), tofu (soya-based food), soya milk, and a pea emulsion. The true ileal digestibility (TID) of their amino acids was determined in minipigs, to calculate the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS). The TID of the proteins was high and not significantly different between the foods tested: 97% for seitan, 95% for tofu, 92% for soya milk and 94% for pea emulsion. There were only minor differences in individual amino acid TIDs.

Phytase Activity in the Digesta from Different Parts of the Digestive Tract and Ileal Digestibility of Nutrients in Broilers Fed with Buckwheat Diets.

In the present study, the effects of dietary buckwheat on phytase activity in the digesta from different parts of the digestive tract, and ileal digestibility of nutrients were determined in broilers fed with buckwheat diets. Eighty male broilers (29-d-old) were divided into four groups (20 birds each), and were fed one of the following diets until they were 36-d-old: positive control (PC) diet formulated based on the NRC recommendations, negative control (NC) diet containing 0.15% lower non-phytate phosphorus (P) than that in the PC diet, and two other diets formulated by replacing corn in NC

Relationship between digestive enzymes and food habit of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) larvae: Characterization of carbohydrases and digestion of microorganisms.

The sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz and Neiva, 1912) is the main vector of American Visceral Leishmaniasis. In spite of its medical importance and several studies concerning adult digestive physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, very few studies have been carried out to elucidate the digestion in sandfly larvae. Even the breeding sites and food sources of these animals in the field are largely uncharacterized. In this paper, we describe and characterize several carbohydrases from the gut of L. longipalpis larvae, and show that they are probably not acquired from food. The enzyme p…

Ileal amino acid digestibility assay for the growing meat chicken--comparison of ileal and excreta amino acid digestibility in the chicken.

1. The apparent and true amino acid digestibilities in sorghum, wheat, soyabean meal, meat-and-bone meal, fish meal and blood meal for growing meat chickens were determined using an assay based on the collection of digesta from the terminal ileum and comparison was made with digestibility values determined using an excreta-based assay. 2. Five-week-old meat chickens were given maize-soyabean meal basal diet or mixtures of the basal diet and test diets containing the 6 ingredients as the sole source of dietary protein (50:50 on weight basis). Apparent amino acid digestibility values of assay di

Use of microwave digestion and atomic absorption spectrophotometry to determine chromic oxide as a digestibility marker in feed, feces, and ileal content.

Most conventional digestion procedures, such as dry ashing and wet ashing, are tedious and labor intensive. Microwave digestion is a good alternative, because microwave dissolution is faster, safer, and simpler, and provides more controlled reproducible conditions than conventional methods. The purpose of this study was to develop a microwave digestion method for mineralizing meat and bone meal diets, feces, and ileal contents. Each sample was heated on a hot plate for 10 min, dry ashed at 65 degrees C for 4 h, and transferred into microwave vessels. Then, 10 mL 70% HNO3 was added. Samples wer…

The phasmid Carausius morosus efficiently digests stachyose, oleuropein, pectin and hemicelluloses, but only weakly digests native leaf cellulose.

Great interest centres on novel enzyme sources for the biotechnological exploitation of biomass, especially cellulose. Phytophagous insects, including phasmids, could be such sources. However, 'cellulase' activity has often been assayed with carboxymethylcellulose as an artificial soluble substrate. We tested whether conclusions with carboxymethylcellulose are applicable to phasmids feeding on leaves containing native (semi-crystalline) cellulose and potentially masked cell-wall-matrix polysaccharides. Specifically, we investigated what leaf carbohydrates are utilisable by the 'digestome' of t

Improvements in Digestive Symptoms After Participation in an App-Based Chronic Digestive Disease Management Program: A Prospective Cohort Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Fewer than 20% of adults with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms have accessed care to evaluate or manage their symptoms. We sought to characterize whether adults with chronic GI symptoms would use an app for symptom monitoring and the effects of participation in a digitally delivered GI chronic care program. METHODS: We provided a digital digestive care management app to adults via their employer-sponsored benefits. We evaluated participants' self-reported GI symptoms at baseline and between 30 and 90 days post-registration. GI symptoms (e.g., abdominal pain and constipation)

Refining measurement of swallowing safety in the Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) criteria: Validation of DIGEST version 2.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) is a validated method to grade the severity of pharyngeal swallowing impairment as a toxicity of cancer based on the degree and patterns of penetration/aspiration and pharyngeal residue over a standardly acquired radiographic modified barium swallow (MBS) study. Since its implementation in 2016, areas for the refinement of grading mild safety impairments have been identified by clinical and research users. The objective of this study was to assess the performance and validity of refined DIGESTsafety grading criteria (per DIGEST

Benefit-risk assessment of metal bioavailability in edible fungi by biomimetic whole digestive tracts with digestion, metabolism, and absorption functions.

As worldwide edible fungi, Lentinula edodes and Agaricus bisporus accumulate both essential and harmful metals. Metal bioavailability is important for metal benefit-risk assessment. A full functional model of digestive tracts (including digestion, metabolism, and absorption) is established. Under the digestive tract functions, the bioaccessible and bioavailable metals are released from edible fungi and absorbed by intestinal tract, respectively. Based on bioavailable metal contents in the intestine, safe dosage and maximum consumption are 43.52 g/d and 248.7 g/d for Agaricus bisporu, 20.59/328…

[Digestive neuroendocrine tumors : the importance of a multidisciplinary approach].

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms form a heterogeneous and complex group of tumors with varying degrees of malignant potential. Their incidence has significantly increased in recent decades. Due to their generally indolent nature, they are often discovered incidentally or following extensive investigations for nonspecific symptoms, leading to diagnostic delays. Notable advances have been made in diagnostic and therapeutic options, including radionuclide therapy, endoscopic resection or radiofrequency ablation, somatostatin analogs, and targeted molecular therapies. A multidiscipl

The role of claudins in the physiology and pathology of the digestive system.

Claudins (CLDNs) are small transmembrane proteins that constitute a key component of tight junctions, playing a crucial role in maintaining epithelial barrier integrity and regulating paracellular ion flux. To date, 27 members of the CLDN family have been identified in mammals. CLDNs are expressed throughout the gastrointestinal tract, with marked regional variability along different anatomical segments. Alterations in CLDN expression have been widely observed under pathological conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases, bacterial infections, and various malignancies. Typically - though n

MicroRNAs in the Diagnosis of Digestive Diseases: A Comprehensive Review.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as crucial regulators in digestive pathologies, including inflammatory bowel disease (miR-31, miR-155, and miR-21), colorectal cancer (miR-21, miR-598, and miR-494), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (miR-21, miR-192, and miR-122). Their capacity to modulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level makes them highly promising candidates for biomarkers and therapeutic interventions. However, despite considerable progress, their clinical application remains challenging. Research has shown that miRNA expression is highly dynamic, varying across patient

Impacts of digestibility stalls on the welfare of growing bulls.

Diet digestibility and nitrogen balance are essential indicators for studies on ruminant nutrition. Both these indicators are conventionally assessed over 1- to 2-week periods when animals are restrained in so-called digestibility stalls that largely restrict their movements. Here, we aimed to assess the welfare of bulls in digestibility stalls and to check whether stall-related welfare impacts could be limited by shortening the duration of the stay in the stall. Sixteen Charolais bulls accommodated in a large group pen were confined in digestibility stalls for 2 weeks, in two repetitions spac

Digest: The importance of genetic background in bacterial evolution.

How does genetic background influence a population's evolutionary response to an environmental change? Which traits are selected for and how quickly does the population adapt? Filipow et al. (2024) address these questions by exploiting the natural genetic variation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium often found in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. They find that while genetic background influences the rate of phenotypic evolution, it does not alter the evolutionary outcome. Their findings contribute to a growing body of work that connects genetic background to future evolvability.

Microbiota and Digestive Metabolites Alterations in Functional Dyspepsia.

Functional dyspepsia (FD), a widespread and debilitating digestive disease, is thought to originate from disrupted gut-brain communication. The cause of FD is not completely understood, but recent evidence suggests it could be due to multiple factors and can vary among different patient groups. Factors like gut motility changes, increased sensitivity to pain in the gut, ongoing low-level inflammation, and increased gut permeability have all been linked to the development of FD. Additionally, changes in the gut microbiome have been suggested to play a significant role in the disease. The gut mi

Valorisation of anaerobic digestate to nutrients and humic substances.

Nutrient-rich product fractions were produced from abundant, yet currently chemically under-utilized nutrients-containing feedstock, residual digestate formed during anaerobic digestion (AD). The objective of this research was to experiment individually three sub-processes, i.e., precipitation of organic humic substances and phosphorus from the digestate reject water, liberation of reject water nitrogen as ammonia gas during the lime treatment and recovering it with membrane contactor (MC), and finally novel utilization of ammonia for leaching nitrogen-enriched organic substances from the dige…
