Therapeutic patient education through digital technology: Recommendations for paediatrics and dermatology.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic patient education (TPE) in pediatrics is part of the healthcare pathway, from diagnosis in childhood to adulthood. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the development of digital TPE. The framework for digital TPE (e-TPE) remains to be defined. OBJECTIVES: Suggest key points for organizing and running e-TPE programs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A monocentric prospective study was conducted in adolescents with a chronic skin disease, as well as their parents and healthcare professionals participating in an e-TPE program. Participants answered open questions either during a one-

Humanizing "multimodal" digital phenotyping of serious mental illness.

Developing digital technologies for quantifying symptoms of serious mental illness (SMI) has been a focus of research for over 7 decades. Recent efforts have focused on multimodal feature integration, which captures conceptually distinct behavioral domains. We evaluated links between nonverbal digital features and human-rated negative symptoms, with the expectation that their relationship would depend on verbal information (i.e., be moderated by language emotional tone). We believe this better approximates how humans integrate verbal and nonverbal information when making clinical ratings. Mobi

Does digital infrastructure improve individuals' body weight? A quasi-natural experiment based on "Broadband China" policy.

Whether digital infrastructure development improves population health outcomes remains empirically contested. This study exploits China's "Broadband China" pilot policy-implemented in staggered batches across 117 cities during 2014-2016-as a quasi-natural experiment and employs a difference-in-differences (DID) design with seven waves of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS, 2010-2022) to estimate the causal effect of broadband infrastructure expansion on individual body weight and weight-related health inequality. The main findings are threefold. First, the "Broadband China" policy significan

Clinical Outcomes of a Digital Companion in Periodontal Care: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of a digital health companion app as an adjunct to systematic periodontal therapy. METHODS: Seven German university dental centres conducted this multi-centre randomised controlled trial. Adults with periodontitis (n = 194) were assigned to standard periodontal care with or without the Paro-ComPas app. The primary endpoint was the gingival bleeding index (GBI) at baseline, re-evaluation and during supportive periodontal care. Secondary outcomes included plaque and bleeding on probing. Confirmatory analyses used longitudinal mixed-effects regression. Exploratory a

Optimizing participation in digital health studies: understanding appointment attendance.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether attendance at online digital health research appointments in the American Women Assessing Risk Epidemiologically (AWARE) study was associated with (1) participant age, (2) scheduling factors (time of day, day of week, month), (3) appointment confirmation, and (4) HIV behavioral risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed scheduling and eligibility screening data from AWARE, a 24-month U.S.-based longitudinal digital cohort of cisgender women at elevated likelihood of HIV seroconversion. Participant demographic and behavioral data were merged with th

Digital Health Information Use, Trust, and Language-Related Disparities in Health Literacy in South Tyrol, Italy: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) is a crucial determinant of population health; however, disparities persist in multilingual settings. In South Tyrol, Italy, where German- and Italian-speaking populations coexist within a unified health care system, HL disparities may reflect differences in language, culture, and digital engagement. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether the usage of digital health information mediates the relationship between language group and HL and examined informational trust and other sociodemographic factors as covariates of HL. METHODS: Data were obtained from a

Rethinking trauma in an age of total visibility.

The digital age has transformed the way we experience and respond to traumatic events. Continuous and vicarious exposure to distressing visual content through social media and online news has created new pathways for psychological harm that existing diagnostic frameworks fail to capture. This perspective article examines how digital technologies have blurred the boundaries between direct and indirect trauma, enabling mediated exposure to evoke stress responses comparable to those arising from firsthand experience. Using the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel as a case study, it explores how th

Are You Sure This is What You Really Want? Conversational Recommender Systems for Enhancing Human Autonomy.

Recommender systems are widely used to help users navigate information overload in digital environments. While they are often portrayed as tools that enhance autonomy by optimizing choice and personalizing content, this article argues that many current recommender systems designs in fact undermine user autonomy. Drawing on a conception of autonomy in which the formation and configuration of preferences, particularly higher-level desires in the Frankfurtian sense, play a prominent role, we examine how dominant recommendation techniques shape users' desires and, to a greater extent, their identi

Governing digital misinformation: A computational analysis of platform intervention using a three-party evolutionary game model.

The proliferation of misinformation on short video platforms poses a significant challenge to digital governance and public trust. While platforms are central actors, their strategic role in rumor governance remains underexplored. This study introduces a tripartite evolutionary game model that incorporates the platform as a bounded rational strategic actor alongside rumor spreaders and information clarifiers, and combines this model with the extended SICR (Susceptible-Rumor spreader-Clarifier-Recovered) information diffusion framework, where game strategies and payoffs are defined based on use

Exploring Non-Embodied AI-Based Digital Companions for Older Adults in Aging and Care Contexts: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly positioned as a response to social isolation, loneliness, and unmet psychosocial needs across health and care contexts. Non-embodied AI-based digital companions have attracted growing attention for their potential to support companionship, social interaction, communication, and psychosocial well-being among older adults, including people living with dementia. However, the evidence base remains underexplored. Terminology is inconsistently applied, systems are variably defined, and studies are distributed acros

A Systematic Review on the Effectiveness of Interventions for Individuals Who Have Committed Online Sexual Crimes Involving Children.

Objective: Online sexual crimes involving children have increased significantly with greater public access to the internet, underscoring the pressing need for effective intervention programs. While previous reviews attest to the effectiveness of psychological interventions for people who commit sexual offenses, none have specifically addressed those who commit sex crimes involving children using the internet. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological intervention programs targeting these crimes, identifying the most effective approaches in behavioral change. Me

Psychological profiles of mindfulness and tourist fatigue: a latent profile analysis in a digital travel context.

The study examined how the different psychological constructs of mindfulness, anxiety, and positive fantasy engagement influence tourist fatigue in digitally mediated tourism experiences. In response to the increasing anxiety regarding cognitive overload in AI-driven travel ecosystems, the study reconceptualizes fatigue as configuration-dependent, but not uniformly experienced. Composite measures of mindfulness (MAAS), anxiety (GAD-7), positive fantasy engagement, and tourist fatigue were determined using survey data of 646 tourists. Latent Profile Analysis was used to identify psychological s

What motivates short-form video consumption? Development and validation of a multidimensional short-form video use motivation scale.

Short-form video platforms have rapidly become a dominant mode of digital engagement, yet existing measures of user motivation have largely been adapted from broader social media or smartphone instruments rather than designed for the distinctive affordances of short-form video. The present research developed and validated the Multidimensional Short-Form Video Use Motivation Scale across two studies of frequent users (total N = 1728) aged 19-40. An initial item pool was generated through literature reviews and focus group interviews, followed by content validity evaluation. In Study 1 (n = 719)

HelloType1 Digital Education Platform for Individuals With Type 1 Diabetes in Southeast Asia: Data Analytics Study.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes remains an underrecognized and challenging condition across Southeast Asia, where many countries face limited health care infrastructure, shortages of trained health care professionals, inconsistent access to diabetes education, and a lack of culturally appropriate resources in local languages. These barriers contribute to delayed diagnosis, suboptimal self-management, high rates of diabetic ketoacidosis, and inequities in care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Action4Diabetes, a nonprofit organization working with local health care professionals and diabetes associati
