Wiggle and glide: fine-scale telemetry reveals unique diving strategies in benthic-foraging sea snakes.

BACKGROUND: The efficient acquisition of two critical but spatially separated resources -food and oxygen- governs the daily movements and diving patterns of air-breathing aquatic animals. Unlike pinnipeds, turtles and seabirds, fully marine ('true') sea snakes spend their entire lifecycle at sea and have evolved specialised movement behaviours. However, fine-scale data on the diving behaviour of free-ranging sea snakes remain scarce, limiting our understanding of their ecology and vulnerability to anthropogenic threats. METHODS: We used acoustic telemetry to track five individuals of two bent…

Diving into commercial cellulase formulations for circular polyester/cotton separation through targeted depolymerization of cotton.

The rapid growth of the textile industry, driven by fast fashion trends, has significantly increased textile waste, particularly blends of polyester (PET) and cotton fibers, and efficient recycling of blended textiles requires effective fiber separation methods, yet current strategies face substantial limitations. This study investigates the performance of commercially available cellulase formulations for enzymatic depolymerization of cotton and suggests an optimized activity pattern for novel reactor systems for recycling of PET/cotton blends. Thirty-five cellulase formulations intended for b

Decompression Illness After Technical Diving Session in Mediterranean Sea: Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and HBO Therapy.

SCUBA diving poses risks due to pressure changes during descent (compression) and ascent (decompression). Decompression sickness (DCS) occurs due to gas bubble formation as the pressure decreases, causing joint pain, numbness, dizziness, or even paralysis and death. Immediate treatment involves 100% oxygen to help eliminate inert gases and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which is essential to reduce gas emboli formation and inflammation, thus improving symptoms. We evaluated oxy-inflammation biomarkers in the saliva and urine of nine subjects pre- and post-technical dive on the Haven wreck (…

Aqua-eroticum: an unusual autoerotic fatality in a lake involving a home-made diving apparatus.

The term Aqua-eroticum was first introduced in 1984 by Sivaloganathan to describe the unusual autoerotic death of a man using submersion as an asphyxia method. This was the first case of that kind, and since then, no other case of autoerotic submersion has been reported, nor other autoerotic fatality in open water. Here we report the case of a 25-year-old man, nude under a home-made plastic body suit, overdressed for the season with winter clothes and restrained by complex bondage. He was submersed, tied underwater to a boat and was using a home-made diving apparatus for air supply. Death was …

Chemoreceptor control of heart rate and behaviour during diving in the tufted duck (Aythya fuligula).

1. The role of chemoreceptors in the control of heart rate and behaviour during diving activity in the tufted duck was investigated in two ways. In a closed-loop experiment, ducks were exposed to ambient gas mixtures of varied composition during diving activity in an indoor tank. Characteristics of diving behaviour, heart rate and deep body temperature were monitored under hypoxic, hyperoxic and hypercapnic conditions and compared with those in air. Secondly, in an open-loop experiment the role of the carotid body (CB) chemoreceptors in the control of the responses to altered inspired gas comp…

Comparison of diving experience factors between divers classified as positive and negative for bone cysts.

Official U.S. Navy diving records for enlisted divers who were 35 years of age and older were examined for differences in diving experience between those who were classified as positive or negative for bone cysts. One-third of the divers (n = 31) were classified as positive, and two-thirds (n = 62) as negative, for bone cysts. Diving experience factors included total years of diving experience, frequency of dives between 15 and 31 m, frequency of dives deeper than 31 m, number of saturation dives, number of dives involving decompression, and number of cases of decompression sickness. None of t…

Biomechanical analysis of the flutter kick in diving: kinematics, muscle activation and coordination of lower limbs.

This study aims to investigate the biomechanics of the flutter kick in diving, including lower limb kinematics, muscle activation patterns, and coordination, as well as how these characteristics change under varying diving speeds. Ten divers performed 100-meter underwater swimming at self-selected normal and fast speeds, and their lower limb kinematic data and surface electromyography signals from eight muscles were collected. Based on the refined phase division of the kicking cycle into two transition phases, a power phase, and a recovery phase, the movement pattern featuring bending waves is…

DCI With Severe Portal Venous Gas Embolism After Cave Diving in a Diver With a PFO.

BACKGROUND: Cave diving involves prolonged bottom times and limited ascent routes, markedly increasing inert gas load and the risk of decompression illness (DCI). The presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) further elevates this risk. CASE SUMMARY: A dive trainer developed DCI with severe portal venous air embolism after a 2.5-h cave dive. Symptoms included >20 min of mental confusion, skin rashes, and mild abdominal discomfort. Hyperbaric therapy improved his condition. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a grade III, high-risk PFO. Following shared decision-making, percutaneous PFO c…

Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus) Diel Dive Patterns in a Shallow Fragmented Foraging Habitat.

Predators select foraging habitats to maximise energetic gains. However, habitat fragmentation can lead to increased costs from disturbances … h can be less than the body length of the animal. The vertical movement patterns of the whales from diving overlapped with major shipping traffic. The whales spent > 67% of their time at depths shallower than the drafts of large ships (~10 m). The whales fed primarily during the day and remained very shallow at night (mean 5 m) while resting and travelli …

Harnessing marine antimicrobial peptides for novel therapeutics: A deep dive into ocean-derived bioactives.

Marine antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are potent bioactive compounds with broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi, offering a promising alternative to traditional antibiotics. These small, cationic, and amphiphilic peptides (3-50 amino acids) are key components of marine organisms' immune defenses, adapted to harsh oceanic environments. Discovered in the 1980s, marine AMPs have garnered interest for their unique structures and potential applications in human health. However, despite the ocean's vast biodiversity, they remain underexplored compared to land-based AMPs. This r

Blood pH, hemoglobin function and oxygen transport throughout the dive cycle of emperor penguins.

Optimal blood O2 transport during a dive and during the apnea-to-eupnea transition at the surface is essential as cardiovascular adjustments and the onset of hyperventilation shift an animal from a state of hypoxia during late ascent to one of O2 replenishment and metabolic restoration at the surface. Because pH affects the O2 affinity of hemoglobin (Hb), we examined the relationship of blood pH to carbon dioxide and lactate in emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri), and determined that pH 7.3 was an appropriate lower bound for blood pH during the dive and surface intervals. Hb saturation cal

Exploring new depths: king penguins break dive records during the austral winter.

In recent years, increasing evidence has shown that the gut microbiota and their metabolites play a pivotal role in human health and diseases, especially the cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Intestinal flora imbalance (changes in the composition and function of intestinal flora) accelerates the progression of CVDs. The intestinal flora breaks down the food ingested by the host into a series of metabolically active products, including trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO), short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), primary and secondary bile acids, tryptophan and indole derivatives, phenylacetylglutamine (PAGln)
