Three-dimensional pharyngeal airway and hyoid bone changes in skeletal class I malocclusion treated with extraction and non-extraction protocols: a comparative study of fixed orthodontic appliance and clear aligners.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) evaluation of fixed appliances (FAs) and clear aligners (CAs) on pharyngeal airway (PA) dimensions and hyoid bone (HB) positioning in skeletal Class I malocclusion patients treated with extraction and non-extraction protocols, comparing the effects within each protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study involved 120 adult patients divided into extraction and non-extraction groups, each further subdivided equally into those treated with FAs and CAs. PA segmentation and measurements were conducted with

Factors affecting local alveolar bone thickness in unilateral maxillary canine-lateral incisor transposition.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to use 3-dimensional data to investigate the factors affecting local alveolar bone thickness in unilateral maxillary canine-lateral incisor transposition. METHODS: Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography data of 34 patients with unilateral maxillary canine-lateral transposition were imported into Dolphin Imaging software (version 11.8; Dolphin Imaging and Management Solutions, Chatsworth, Calif) for 3-dimensional reconstruction. The age, gender, and type of transposition at the beginning of treatment were recorded. The thickness and height of the transposed c

Different transformations underlie blowhole and nasal passage development in a toothed whale (Odontoceti: Stenella attenuata) and a baleen whale (Mysticeti: Balaenoptera physalus).

Reorientation of the nasal passage away from the anteroposterior axis has evolved rarely in mammals. Unlike other mammals, cetaceans (e.g., whales, dolphins, and porpoises) have evolved a "blowhole": posteriorly repositioned nares that open dorsad. Accompanying the evolution of the blowhole, the nasal passage has rotated dorsally. Neonatal cetaceans possess a blowhole, but early in development, cetacean embryos exhibit head morphologies that resemble those of other mammals. Previous workers have proposed two developmental models for how the nasal passage reorients during prenatal ontogeny. In …

Semantic projection recovers rich human knowledge of multiple object features from word embeddings.

How is knowledge about word meaning represented in the mental lexicon? Current computational models infer word meanings from lexical co-occurrence patterns. They learn to represent words as vectors in a multidimensional space, wherein words that are used in more similar linguistic contexts-that is, are more semantically related-are located closer together. However, whereas inter-word proximity captures only overall relatedness, human judgements are highly context dependent. For example, dolphins and alligators are similar in size but differ in dangerousness. Here, we use a domain-general metho…

Automatic three-dimensional nasal and pharyngeal airway subregions identification via Vision Transformer.

OBJECTIVES: Upper airway assessment requires a fully-automated segmentation system for complete or sub-regional identification. This study aimed to develop a novel Deep Learning (DL) model for accurate segmentation of the upper airway and achieve entire and subregional identification. METHODS: Fifty cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, including 24,502 slices, were labelled as the ground truth by one orthodontist and two otorhinolaryngologists. A novel model, a lightweight multitask network based on the Swin Transformer and U-Net, was built for automatic segmentation of the entire uppe

Comparative study of micronucleus assays and dicentric plus ring chromosomes for dose assessment in particular cases of partial-body exposure.

Purpose: The goal was to compare the micronucleus (MN) and dicentric plus ring chromosomes (D + R) assays for dose assessment in cases of partial body irradiations (PBI). Materials and methods: We constructed calibration curves for each assay at doses ranging from 0 to 5 Gy of X-rays at dose rate of 0.275 Gy/min. To simulate partial-body exposures, blood samples from two donors were irradiated with 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 Gy and the ratios of irradiated to unirradiated blood were 25, 50, and 100%. Different tests were used to confirm if all samples were overdispersed or zero-inflated and for partial-b

Assessing host-parasite specificity through coprological analysis: a case study with species of Corynosoma (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) from marine mammals.

In this paper we report an investigation of the utility of coprological analysis as an alternative technique to study parasite specificity whenever host sampling is problematic; acanthocephalans from marine mammals were used as a model. A total of 252 scats from the South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens, and rectal faeces from 43 franciscanas, Pontoporia blainvillei, from Buenos Aires Province, were examined for acanthocephalans. Specimens of two species, i.e. Corynosoma australe and C. cetaceum, were collected from both host species. In sea lions, 78 out of 145 (37.9%) females of C. aust

A review of Brucella sp. infection of sea mammals with particular emphasis on isolates from Scotland.

Brucellae recovered from sea mammals were first reported in 1994. In the years since both culture and serological analysis have demonstrated that the infection occurs in a wide range of species of marine mammals inhabiting a vast amount of the world's oceans. Molecular studies have demonstrated that the isolates differ from those found amongst terrestrial animals and also distinguish between strains which have seals and cetaceans as their preferred hosts. At the phenotypic level seal and cetacean strains can also be differed with respect to their CO(2) requirement, primary growth on Farrells m

Constructional morphology and mode of attachment of the trunk of Corynosoma cetaceum (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae).

Dead specimens of Corynosoma cetaceum were used to describe the trunk musculature of this species and to infer the use of the trunk as a secondary holdfast. Inferences were based on trunk muscle arrangement, changes in trunk shape, size and distribution of spines, and geometry of tegument thickness. The foretrunk of C. cetaceum is swollen and forms a spiny disk that is bent ventrally. The disk is flattened by several groups of muscles not described previously, which seem able to finely adjust the disk surface over the substratum. Disk attachment appears to be accomplished by two dorsal neck re

Morbillivirus infection in two common porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from the coasts of England and Scotland.

Two common porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), one found stranded on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, and the other in the Moray Firth, Scotland, in late 1990, were examined post mortem. Lesions of diffuse bronchointerstitial pneumonia were present in both animals; they were characterised by the infiltration of alveoli with leucocytes, macrophages and multinucleate syncytia, the necrosis of bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium, focal proliferation of type II pneumocytes and occasional acidophilic cytoplasmic inclusions in alveolar macrophages and syncytia. Lymphoid depletion was apparent in the spleen, t

Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) in marine mammals and seabirds in Peru.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A/H5N1 viruses (lineage 2.3.4.4b) are rapidly invading the Americas, threatening wildlife, poultry, and potentially evolving into the next global pandemic. In November 2022 HPAI arrived in Peru, triggering massive pelican and sea lion die-offs. We report genomic characterization of HPAI/H5N1 in five species of marine mammals and seabirds (dolphins, sea lions, sanderlings, pelicans and cormorants). Peruvian viruses belong to lineage 2.3.4.4b, but they are 4:4 reassortants where 4 genomic segments (PA, HA, NA and MP) position within the Eurasian lineage t…

Fossil evidence for the origin of aquatic locomotion in archaeocete whales.

Recent members of the order Cetacea (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) move in the water by vertical tail beats and cannot locomote on land. Their hindlimbs are not visible externally and the bones are reduced to one or a few splints that commonly lack joints. However, cetaceans originated from four-legged land mammals that used their limbs for locomotion and were probably apt runners. Because there are no relatively complete limbs for archaic archaeocete cetaceans, it is not known how the transition in locomotory organs from land to water occurred. Recovery of a skeleton of an early fossil cet…

Involvement of morbilliviruses in the pathogenesis of demyelinating disease.

Two members of the morbillivirus genus of the family Paramyxoviridae, canine distemper virus (CDV) and measles virus (MV), are well-known for their ability to cause a chronic demyelinating disease of the CNS in their natural hosts, dogs and humans, respectively. Both viruses have been studied for their potential involvement in the neuropathogenesis of the human demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Recently, three new members of the morbillivirus genus, phocine distemper virus (PDV), porpoise morbillivirus (PMV) and dolphin morbillivirus (DMV), have been discovered. These viruses have

Network indicators of cultural resilience to anthropogenic removals in animal societies.

Social learning, information transmission and culture play vital roles in the lives of social animals, influencing their survival, reproduct … ns (Papio cynocephalus), African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus). We reveal how removals of key network positions reduce network efficiency. However, groups with high levels of innovation may cope with changing social network structures. These findings highlight the importance of protecting key …

Genital interactions during simulated copulation among marine mammals.

Genitalia are morphologically variable across many taxa and in physical contact during intromission, but little is known about how variation in form correlates with function during copulation. Marine mammals offer important insights into the evolutionary forces that act on genital morphology because they have diverse genitalia and are adapted to aquatic living and mating. Cetaceans have a fibroelastic penis and muscular vaginal folds, while pinnipeds have a baculum and lack vaginal folds. We examined copulatory fit in naturally deceased marine mammals to identify anatomical landmarks in contac

Classification of Brucella strains isolated from marine mammals using DNA-DNA hybridization and ribotyping.

DNA-DNA hybridization showed that the Brucella strains recently isolated from marine mammals belong to the monospecific genus Brucella (more than 77% DNA relatedness). Ribotyping (HindIII rDNA restriction patterns) showed that they may represent a separate subgroup (marine type) specifically associated with marine mammals.

[Phylo- and ontogenetic development of the nucleus of the brachium of the inferior colliculus].

In recent neuromorphological investigations and in studying the passage, as an addition to nuclei of the auditory system so called "parabrachial area" was subjected to a special comparative cytoarchitectonic investigation and terminological definition, since the term "parabrachial nucleus" has already been reserved in neuromorphology to designate other brain formations. The investigation has demonstrated that the term "nucleus of the inferior quadrigemina brachium" is more suitable to the form studied. This nucleus has been stated to penetrate deeply into the inferior tuberculum corpori quadri
