A review of spontaneous bone metastases in domestic and laboratory animals.

Bone metastases cause significant morbidity and ultimately death in some human cancer patients. Although experimental animal models of skeletal metastases have been invaluable for investigating the molecular mechanisms of cancer progression and growth in bones, few of these models recapitulate the heterogeneous nature of bone metastases observed in humans. Animals with naturally occurring cancers have been proposed as ideal and unique models for human cancer research. From this, understanding the incidence, histologic features, clinical presentation, and response to therapy of spontaneous bone

Morphometric Assessment of Pelvic Asymmetry in Domestic Cats and Dogs.

This study used 3D landmark-based geometric morphometrics under an object-symmetry framework to quantify pelvic asymmetry in domestic cats and dogs while explicitly accounting for measurement error through replicate digitizations. Procrustes ANOVA revealed significant components of both directional asymmetry (DA) and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in the overall dataset, and DA was further visualized as a structured, non-random pattern across the landmark configuration. Measurement error remained smaller than the FA component, yielding high repeatability, indicating that the detected asymmetry pat

Microscopic anatomy of the lungs of domestic animals, mice, and rats.

The lung is composed of conducting airways, a gas-exchange region, and a dual circulatory system. Any of these components may be altered in respiratory disease, and complicated cases can be a diagnostic challenge. For veterinary pathologists, a solid foundation in normal anatomy is essential for recognition of patterns of disease. Additionally, the structure of the lungs informs the function; therefore, knowledge of how normal structures are disrupted provides insight into the pathogenesis of lung diseases. We detail the organizational structure, microanatomy, and cell types of the lungs of se

Systemic Mycobacterium celatum infection in a female domestic ferret.

Mycobacterium celatum is a slow-growing, non-tuberculous mycobacterium with occasional branching morphology that has been reported mainly in immunocompromised human patients and rarely in other animal species. A 5-y-old female ferret was presented to a veterinary clinic with a history of anorexia and lethargy; peripheral lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and pneumonia were detected. Despite treatment, progressive deterioration of the ferret's health led to euthanasia of the animal. Autopsy revealed numerous small 1-4-mm white nodules in the lung, spleen, and kidneys. Histologically, the kidney an

Domestic violence in Lewy body dementia: A national study.

A descriptive study using a transversal national online survey to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and specifically, the perpetration of violent acts against primary caregivers. 196 responses, obtained in one month, were analyzed. Delirium, hallucinations, anxiety, and apathy were the most frequently reported BPSD symptoms (over 80% of responders). Primary caregivers expressed the highest degree of distress from agitation and aggressive behavior. Moreover, 45.9% of primary caregivers reported being t

Health morbidities in carers with experience of domestic violence and abuse.

BACKGROUND: The poor health of unpaid carers is well-documented. Evidence also highlights that carers can experience high levels of domestic violence and abuse (DVA). However, links between DVA victimisation and health outcomes in carers remains largely overlooked. We examined DVA prevalence in carers and non-carers, and the relationship between carers' DVA experience and health morbidities. METHODS: We analysed data from a general population probability sample survey of 6,971 adults (aged ≥ 16 years) in England. Multivariable logistic regression models examined associations between caregivin

Syndactyly in domestic feline (Felis catus). Case report.

In this case report, we describe the clinical case of a domestic cat diagnosed with complex syndactyly. A feline, aged approximately eight months, with an unknown family history, was referred with deformities in both forelimbs. Clinical examination revealed no abnormalities other than her phalanges. Radiographic imaging of the carpus and digits was obtained in both the dorso-palmar and lateral projections, using different X-ray equipment. A diagnosis of complex and complete syndactyly was rendered. This report could be useful to augment the few existing reports on this type of congenital disea

Exposure of Domestic Cats (Felis catus) to Rodenticidal Compounds.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are highly effective, but can be of environmental concern due to primary and secondary non-target exposure, with the latter possible being relevant to domestic cats. Therefore, liver residues of ARs and an alternative rodenticide, α-chloralose, were systematically monitored in domestic cats for the first time in the current study. In 2021 and 2022, the carcasses of 99 cats were collected in Slovenia and liver residues were measured by using solid supported liquid-liquid extraction and LC-MS/MS. The results show that 65% of cats carried at least one rodenticide.

Review of published research on primary dysautonomia of domestic animals.

An article published in 1992 by Marion M. Pollin and I.R. Griffiths reviewed the topic of primary dysautonomias of the autonomic nervous system of unidentified origin in multiple domestic species, specifically cats, dogs and horses. Thirty-one years later, we appear no closer to identifying the causal agents of these strikingly similar diseases. This article reviews the similarities and differences in clinical presentation and pathology of dysautonomia in canids, felids, equids, leporids and other less frequently reported species.

Domestic hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by inadvertent exposure to feathers.

OBJECTIVE: Case series of patients with domestic hypersensitivity pneumonitis, focusing on hidden avian exposures or other non-suspected antigens (feather comforters and pillows). METHODS: Seven female patients diagnosed with non-occupational HP were evaluated using clinical records from La Paz University Hospital (2014-2022). Data collected included exposure history, HRCT findings, IgG antibodies, BAL, biopsies, and treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Patients had a median age of 53.5 years (range: 15-75), with varied exposure to birds or indirect sources like feather duvets. Diagnosis was made ba

Bilateral conjunctival sporotrichosis in a domestic cat: case report.

Feline sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungi of the genus Sporothrix. It is a zoonotic disease that has been increasingly reported in Brazil. While it commonly presents as skin nodules, nasal discharge, and generalized ulcerative lesions, ocular involvement is rare. This case report describes an unusual presentation of sporotrichosis with bilateral conjunctival manifestations in a 2-month-old domestic mixed-breed kitten treated at a private veterinary hospital in João Pessoa. Clinical examination revealed hyperemic conjunctivae with a granulomatous appearance,

Evaluation of Vaccines and Therapeutics Against Ebolaviruses in the Domestic Ferret.

Filoviruses, including Ebola and Marburg viruses, have caused periodic outbreaks of severe hemorrhagic disease in humans and nonhuman primates (NHP), resulting in major public health emergencies primarily in endemic areas. Filovirus disease has also been exported to developed nations, where it has been equally disruptive. There are four ebolaviruses (Ebola virus, Sudan virus, Bundibugyo virus, and Taï Forest virus) and two marburgviruses [Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus] known to cause disease in humans, yet vaccines and therapeutics have only been approved for Ebola virus. NHPs have long

Brain Abscesses in Domestic Ruminants: Clinicopathological and Bacteriological Approaches.

Brain abscesses in ruminants often arise from primary infection foci, leading to an unfavorable prognosis for affected animals. This highlights the need for comprehensive studies on brain abscesses across different ruminant species. We retrospectively investigated medical records of epidemiological, clinical, neuroimaging, anatomopathological, and bacteriological findings in six ruminants (three goats, two cows, and one sheep) diagnosed with brain abscesses. All animals studied were female. Apathy (50%), compulsive walking (33%), decreased facial sensitivity (33%), head pressing (33%), seizure

Structure and scaling of the middle ear in domestic dog breeds.

Although domestic dogs vary considerably in both body size and skull morphology, behavioural audiograms have previously been found to be similar in breeds as distinct as a Chihuahua and a St Bernard. In this study, we created micro-CT reconstructions of the middle ears and bony labyrinths from the skulls of 17 dog breeds, including both Chihuahua and St Bernard, plus a mongrel and a wolf. From these reconstructions, we measured middle ear cavity and ossicular volumes, eardrum and stapes footplate areas and bony labyrinth volumes. All of these ear structures scaled with skull size with negative

[Pulmonary Mycobacterium avium infection in 2 domestic cats].

Two domestic cats (Abyssinian and Carthusian) presented with chronic respiratory signs including cough, respiratory sounds, and polypnea. One of the cats also showed intermittent fever. Thoracic radiographs demonstrated severe changes with predominantly micronodular interstitial lung patterns, some with mineralized areas. Bronchoalveolar lavage detected high-grade pyogranulomatous airway inflammation. A cytological examination for acid-fast bacteria and a PCR for Mycobacteria species of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were negative in both cats. A culture for Mycobacteria of the BALF d

Development of a Corneal and Eye Protection Strategy in Domestic Swine.

Large animal models are essential to research in facial paralysis, face transplant, craniofacial surgery, and ophthalmology. Pigs are a well-studied species with high similarity to human anatomy and physiology for these research areas. However, in contrast to cats and dogs protecting the cornea and eye is difficult in swine due to the inability to use an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) and the complexity of placing and maintaining a temporary tarsorrhaphy for corneal protection due to the strength of the pig levator muscle. This study presents an effective method to provide corneal and eye prote

Amino acid nutrition and metabolism in domestic cats and dogs.

Domestic cats and dogs are carnivores that have evolved differentially in the nutrition and metabolism of amino acids. This article highlights both proteinogenic and nonproteinogenic amino acids. Dogs inadequately synthesize citrulline (the precursor of arginine) from glutamine, glutamate, and proline in the small intestine. Although most breeds of dogs have potential for adequately converting cysteine into taurine in the liver, a small proportion (1.3%-2.5%) of the Newfoundland dogs fed commercially available balanced diets exhibit a deficiency of taurine possibly due to gene mutations. Certa
