Acceleration tolerance after ingestion of a commercial energy drink.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine ingestion has been demonstrated to increase physical performance in some situations. This study examined the ability of a commercial energy drink containing caffeine to enhance acceleration tolerance and strength under G load. METHODS: Eight experienced centrifuge subjects completed three separate experimental acceleration exposures following ingestion of 11.5 ml x kg(-1) bodyweight of (1) a commercial energy drink, providing 5.0 mg caffeine/kg bodyweight; (2) a commercial energy drink without caffeine; or 3) a placebo. The acceleration exposures consisted of a relaxed gr

The burden of road trauma due to other people's drinking.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the burden of road traffic injury due to alcohol consumption by someone other than the injured party. We estimated the number and proportion of these traffic deaths and non-fatal traffic injuries, and the associated social costs, for a five-year period (2003-2007) in New Zealand. We found that more than 40% of alcohol-related crash injuries in New Zealand are suffered by people who have not themselves been drinking. While the rate of road traffic injuries and the involvement of alcohol peak amongst young adults, so too does the proportion of all road t…

History of physical abuse and periconceptional drinking in pregnant women.

This study examines the relationship between physical abuse and periconceptional drinking in women presenting to a mid-Atlantic, urban hospital-based OB/GYN clinic serving a largely indigent population between April 2003 and May 2004. During their first prenatal visit, 308 women completed a screening battery that included the Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS) and measures of alcohol use, including the CAGE, T-ACE, TWEAK, and the PRIME-MD Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). Bivariate analyses, including odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), revealed that women with a history of phys…

Determination of pesticide residues in fruit-based soft drinks.

Here we report the first worldwide reconnaissance study of the presence and occurrence of pesticides in fruit-based soft drinks. While there are strict regulations and exhaustive controls for pesticides in fruits, vegetables, and drinking water, scarce attention has been paid to highly consumed derivate products, which may contain these commodities as ingredients. In the case of the fruit-based soft drinks industry, there are no clear regulations, relating to pesticides, which address them, even when there is significant consumption in vulnerable groups such as children. In this work, we have …

Drinking, drugs and driving in Ireland: more evidence for action.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of drug positivity among drivers suspected of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, and consequently apprehended by the police in Ireland. DESIGN: 2000 specimens were selected for drug analysis, 1000 with results under the limit for alcohol and 1000 over the limit. The limit for alcohol is 80 mg/100 ml in blood and 107 mg/100 ml in urine. Seven drugs/drug classes were examined; amphetamines, methamphetamines, benzodiazapines, cannabinoids, cocaine, opiates and methadone. RESULTS: 331 (33.1%) of the drivers under the legal limit for alcohol tested

Coping motives as a moderator of daily mood-drinking covariation.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the extent to which college students' reports of drinking to cope (DTC) with negative affect moderate the daily covariation between specific types of negative mood (sadness, fear, hostility, shyness and boredom) and alcohol use. METHOD: Participants were full-time college students, aged 18-20, attending a large Southeastern university (N = 72; 50% male). These individuals completed an experience-sampling protocol over a 1-month interval, to assess daily mood and alcohol use. RESULTS: A series of Hierarchical General Linear Models found that individuals w…

Determining the optimal concentration of fluoride in drinking water in Pakistan.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine the optimal concentrations of fluoride for drinking water in Pakistan. Clinical dental examination of 1020 school children aged 12 years was carried out in 19 cities of Pakistan. Correlation between concentrations of water fluoride, caries and fluorosis was investigated by analyzing the data on fluoride concentrations in drinking water in the sampled population for which the caries and the fluorosis levels were also measured. METHODS: The optimal level of fluoride in drinking water is universally calculated by applying the equation of Galagan a…

The provision of drinking water to veal calves for welfare purposes.

Growth performance, behavior, physiology, forestomach development, abomasal lesions, and meat quality of veal calves fed a milk-replacer diet (No Water) were compared to those obtained from calves fed the same diet and provided with increasing amounts of drinking water (Water). Two groups of 69 Polish Friesian calves, balanced according to initial BW, were assigned to two water treatments in a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement that provided solid feed in addition to the milk-replacer diet (No solid feed, 250 g x calf(-1) x d(-1) of wheat straw or the same amount of beet pulp), and the adoption o…

The pressor response to water drinking in humans : a sympathetic reflex?

BACKGROUND: Water drinking increases blood pressure profoundly in patients with autonomic failure and substantially in older control subjects. The mechanism that mediates this response is not known. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied the effect of drinking tap water on seated blood pressure in 47 patients with severe autonomic failure (28 multiple system atrophy [MSA], 19 pure autonomic failure patients [PAF]). Eleven older controls and 8 young controls served as control group. We also studied the mechanisms that could increase blood pressure with water drinking. Systolic blood pressure increase…

Drinking behaviour among teenagers in Switzerland and correlation with lifestyles.

UNLABELLED: Several criteria (frequency, hazardous use, drunkenness) were used to delineate four distinct groups and to analyse the relations between patterns of alcohol use and other health variables. In the 1993 Swiss Multicentre Adolescent Survey on Health, anonymous self-administered questionnaires were distributed to a national representative sample of in-school 15 to 20-year-old adolescents. Of the respondents, 25% answered a module targeting alcohol use (n = 2359) of whom 13% were totally abstinent, 55.1% were moderate drinkers (< or = 1 drink/week and < 3 times drunk), 21.7% were 'soci

Effects of amphetamine on food and fruit drink self-administration.

The effects of oral d-amphetamine (0.12-1.0 mg/kg) on the responding of adult baboons were examined during choice sessions. In Experiment 1, responding on 1 lever was reinforced with 1 food pellet, and responding on a 2nd lever was reinforced with 4 food pellets. The response requirement (fixed ratio [FR]) on the latter lever was 4 times the FR value; that is, the unit price (responses/g) was the same. Amphetamine decreased responding on both levers similarly under all conditions. In Experiment 2, responding on 1 lever was reinforced with 1 pellet, and responding on a 2nd lever was reinforced

Tetrachloroethylene-contaminated drinking water and the risk of breast cancer.

We conducted a population-based case-control study to evaluate the relationship between cases of breast cancer and exposure to tetrachloroethylene (PCE) from public drinking water ( n = 258 cases and 686 controls). Women were exposed to PCE when it leached from the vinyl lining of water distribution pipes. The relative delivered dose was estimated using an algorithm that accounted for residential history, water flow, and pipe characteristics. Only small increases in breast cancer risk were seen among ever-exposed women either when latency was ignored or when 5 to 15 years of latency was consid…

The effect of ethanol drinking on opioid analgesia and receptors in mice.

Recent studies suggest substantial interactions between opioids and ethanol (EtOH). Both in vivo and in vitro experiments indicate that EtOH can regulate opioid systems and that opioids can modify EtOH consumption. In the present studies, we examined if EtOH consumption altered opioid receptors and the potency of opioid analgesics. Mice were given unlimited access to 6-7% EtOH alone for 7 days or were allowed to drink increasing concentrations (3-6%) of EtOH over 13-14 days. Controls had access to water. The EtOH groups drank significantly less volume than controls, although there were no sign
