Monkeypox (MPX) is an emergent severe zoonotic disease resembling that of smallpox. To date, most cases of human MPX have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). While the number of cases has increased steadily in the DRC over the last 30 years, the environmental risk factors that drive the spatiotemporal dynamics of MPX transmission remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal associations between environmental risk factors and annual MPX incidence in the DRC. All MPX cases reported weekly at the health zone level over a 16-year period (200

Morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases clearly remain high. Economic assessments should not be based soley on the costs of existing disease but should incorporate costs saved by preventive efforts as well as savings likely to be attained within several years by improved preventive measures. These factors can be used to assess the relative needs for research for specific infections and to compare the economic importance of infections with that of other health problems. Preventive activities for individuals and for larger groups are outlined, and the relation of research to prevention

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression, affecting approximately 1 in 150 adults globally. BD contributes significantly to disability and years of life lost, with a notable prevalence in Africa. The high relapse rates in BD, exacerbated by limited mental health resources and underdiagnosis, highlight the need for targeted interventions. This study explores the factors contributing to relapse among BD patients at Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital, Uganda, a crucial mental health facilit

The study aimed to investigate the socio-economic impacts of anthrax outbreaks on rural communities in selected Game Management Areas (GMAs) of Zambia, with a particular focus on how livelihood diversification influences exposure to zoonotic disease risk. We used a mixed-methods approach to assess how environmental, economic, and social factors interact to shape community vulnerability and resilience. The central hypothesis is that proximity to wildlife and reliance on high-risk alternative livelihoods, such as charcoal burning, fishing, and unregulated game meat consumption, heighten househol

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health problem. Electronic empowerment has several positive impacts on health. No study has examined whether electronic empowerment prevents intimate partner violence. Economic empowerment has positive and negative effects on IPV victimization. The current study was conducted to investigate whether economic and electronic empowerment of women act as protective factors against IPV in India.
METHODS: A national representative sample of 66,013 ever-married women from 36 member states and union territories of India has been used from t

Implementation researchers have made notable progress in developing and testing implementation strategies (i.e., highly-specified methods used to help providers improve uptake of mental health evidence-based practices: EBPs). Yet, implementation strategies are not widely applied in healthcare organizations to improve delivery of EBPs. Economic considerations are a key factor influencing the use of implementation strategies to deliver and sustain mental health evidence-based practices, in part because many health care leaders are reluctant to invest in ongoing implementation strategy support wi

Depression among young people (aged 18-29 years) transitioning to adulthood is becoming more widespread. Knowing which factors in which systems co-enable resilience to depression is crucial, but there is no comprehensive synthesis of the physiological, psychological, social, economic, institutional, cultural, and environmental system factors associated with no or minimal emerging adult depression, or combinations of these factors. We have therefore conducted a preregistered systematic review (Prospero, CRD42023440153). We searched eight databases for observational studies reporting factors ass

OBJECTIVE: Although adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to gastrointestinal (GI) conditions in children, it remains unclear which specific adversities confer greatest risk and how psychosocial or contextual factors modify these associations. This study identified ACEs most strongly associated with GI symptoms in US youth and evaluated emotional, behavioral, and environmental pathways that may affect these relationships.
METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative data from 73,055 US children and adolescents in the 2021-2023 National Survey of Children's Health. Least Abso

BACKGROUND: The economic cost of breast cancer (BC) treatment and the increase in incidence and prevalence challenges the financial stability of any healthcare system.
OBJECTIVE: To determine direct medical costs (DMC) of BC treatment and factors associated with DMC.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Partial economic evaluation in a retrospective cohort of 160 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of BC. DMC was considered from the IMSS perspective. Bootstrapping analysis was used to deal with uncertainty and generalized linear model to identify factors associated with DCM.
RESULTS: The total average ann

Recent data indicate that Americans are gaining weight at an alarming rate. In fact, data from the CDC indicate that the U.S. obesity average was 12% in 1990 and had grown to 23% by 2005. In recent years, this problem appears to be more prominent in some southern states than in other states. The purpose of this study was to determine what factors were associated with increased levels of obesity. Do demographic, educational, healthcare, or economic factors correlate with this trend? Using state level data in a fixed effects regression model we examined obesity rates for the period 1990-2003. We…

Cancer is subject to stark inequalities, with mortality rates 60% higher in the most deprived parts of the UK. Most research has focused on the role of behavioural risk factors or access to health care services. Insufficient attention has been paid to the influence of socio-economic factors across the whole cancer continuum. This essay argues that to reduce cancer inequalities and improve patient experience and clinical outcomes, we need to look more widely at inequalities in: (1) the risk of developing cancer; (2) the effectiveness of prevention, detection and diagnosis; (3) treatment; (4) su…

BACKGROUND: As with many other populations, abuse of older adults is a growing problem across the Africa Diaspora. Modernization and urbanization are eroding the traditional values of respect for older adults. Also, older adults living in environments with limited social and economic resources, and having no means of economic support create a recipe for elder abuse and neglect.
METHODS: This article reviews the current literature on the epidemiology, risk factors, and interventions used for elder abuse across the African Diaspora.
RESULTS: Reports of elder abuse range from 24.9% to 81.1% acr
