Efficacy of Single Titanium Elastic Nail in the Treatment of Child Femur Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Femoral shaft fractures in childhood constitute an important part of emergency visits to orthopedic clinics. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and reliability of a method in the treatment of simple fractures in the middle of the femoral diaphysis in patients with multiple injuries or in the treatment of cases with a medullary canal that is too narrow for two nails, with a single stretch nail thicker than half the diameter of the canal. METHODS: Between July 2002 and November 2006, examinations were made of 11 femoral fractures in 11 patients who were admitted t

Adaptive Finite Element Modeling of Linear Elastic Fatigue Crack Growth.

This paper proposed an efficient two-dimensional fatigue crack growth simulation program for linear elastic materials using an incremental crack growth procedure. The Visual Fortran programming language was used to develop the finite element code. The adaptive finite element mesh was generated using the advancing front method. Stress analysis for each increment was carried out using the adaptive mesh finite element technique. The equivalent stress intensity factor is the most essential parameter that should be accurately estimated for the mixed-mode loading condition which was used as the onse

Effect of architecture disorder on the elastic response of two-dimensional lattice materials.

We examine how disordering joint position influences the linear elastic behavior of lattice materials via numerical simulations in two-dimensional beam networks. Three distinct initial crystalline geometries are selected as representative of mechanically isotropic materials with low connectivity, mechanically isotropic materials with high connectivity, and mechanically anisotropic materials with intermediate connectivity. Introducing disorder generates spatial fluctuations in the elasticity tensor at the local (joint) scale. Proper coarse-graining reveals a well-defined continuum-level scale e…

Vibration Prediction of the Robotic Arm Based on Elastic Joint Dynamics Modeling.

The flexibility of the joint drive system of an industrial robot can cause vibration at the end part, which can lead to motion errors. A method to predict the vibration during the motion of the robot arm is proposed considering the robot joint flexibility. The method combines the internal transfer function of the drive system and the identification of parameters under external excitation. Firstly, the dynamics of the robot joint system are modeled by a double inertia elastic system. The joint system transfer function from the electromagnetic torque to the arm vibration is obtained according to

Use of impulse excitation technique for the characterization of the elastic anisotropy of pharmaceutical tablets.

Capping and lamination are common defects occurring during the manufacturing of pharmaceutical tablets. Several studies showed that tablet anisotropy can play a role in the occurrence of such defects. In this work, we propose a new and easy methodology to characterize the anisotropy of flat-faced cylindrical tablets, which are considered as transversally isotropic due to the process, through the study of their elastic properties using impulse excitation technique and finite-element method (FEM) simulations. The study was performed for tablets with a thickness-to-diameter-ratio between 0.160 an

Maternal hemodynamics, arterial stiffness and elastic aortic properties in twin pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: There is scant information about maternal cardiovascular hemodynamic change during twin pregnancies. Aim of the study is to investigate longitudinal changes in maternal arterial stiffness, elastic aortic properties and ventricular-arterial coupling (VAC) in uncomplicated twin pregnancies compared to singleton ones. APPROACH: In this prospective longitudinal study, we performed applanation tonometry and transthoracic echocardiography in the first (T1; 10-15 weeks' gestation (w)), second (T2; 19-26 w) and third trimesters (T3; 30-38 w) in women with uncomplicated twin pregnancies, bo

Elastic intramedullary nail treatment of adolescent perihardware radius and ulna refracture.

A 13-year-old girl presented to the clinic with a midshaft refracture of both forearm bones adjacent to the site of a prior forearm fracture that had been treated with plating. She was treated with hardware removal and placement of elastic intramedullary nails. Flexible intramedullary nailing can be successful for a skeletally mature adolescent in treatment of refracture surrounding plate fixation of a midshaft forearm fracture. This technique allows for additional protection of the entire length of the affected bones, while avoiding the extensive dissection needed for extended plating.

Compact Series Visco-Elastic Joint (SVEJ) for Smooth Torque Control.

The design and control of a new series-viscous-elastic joint are presented. The proposed joint consists of 3D printed parts compressing nonlinear elastic silicone springs. The use of silicone springs is the main novelty of the system; they exhibit internal damping, which enhances system performance allowing a simpler and more stable control. Their stiffness allows the system to bear a torque of about 4.5 Nm at a deformation angle of about 20 degrees. In this article, the system is modeled using the Neo-Hookean material model and then characterized through experiments to build the joint torque

Analysis of Stiffness and Energy Consumption of Nonlinear Elastic Joint Legged Robot.

In order to reduce the energy consumption of the legged robot in walking, this paper designs a kind of nonlinear elastic joint from the flexible variable-stiffness joint based on the mammal walking on the limb and optimizes the leg structure of the legged robot. The motor is rigidly connected to the articulated lever. When the lever is accelerated or decelerated, the elastic unit is introduced. The system can be considered as a special variable-rate elastic system. This paper will study it from theory and simulation experiments. Based on the dynamic analysis, a functional relationship between

Heterogeneous Cellular Contributions to Elastic Laminae Formation in Arterial Wall Development.

RATIONALE: Elastin is an important ECM (extracellular matrix) protein in large and small arteries. Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) produce the layered elastic laminae found in elastic arteries but synthesize little elastin in muscular arteries. However, muscular arteries have a well-defined internal elastic lamina (IEL) that separates endothelial cells (ECs) from SMCs. The extent to which ECs contribute elastin to the IEL is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To use targeted elastin (Eln) deletion in mice to explore the relative contributions of SMCs and ECs to elastic laminae formation in different art

Assessment of corneal viscoelasticity using elastic wave optical coherence elastography.

The corneal viscoelasticity have great clinical significance, such as the early diagnosis of keratoconus. In this work, an analysis method which utilized the elastic wave velocity, frequency and energy attenuation to assess the corneal viscoelasticity is presented. Using phase-resolved optical coherence tomography, the spatial-temporal displacement map is derived. The phase velocity dispersion curve and center frequency are obtained by transforming the displacement map into the wavenumber-frequency domain through the 2D fast Fourier transform (FFT). The shear modulus is calculated through Rayl…

Treatment of Unstable Pediatric Tibial Shaft Fractures with Titanium Elastic Nails.

Background and objectives: Pediatric tibial shaft fractures often have satisfactory outcomes after closed reduction and casting. However, surgical treatment may be required in unstable or open fractures. Titanium elastic nails (TENs) are a good option for the surgical treatment of pediatric tibial fractures due to their advantages such as short hospitalization periods, easy applicability, early weight bearing, and early union. In this study, we evaluated radiological and functional outcomes in pediatric patients with tibial shaft fractures that underwent fixation with TENs. Materials and metho

Elastic Staining on Paraffin-embedded Slides of pT3N0M0 Gastric Cancer Tissue.

The elastic lamina, which is usually located in the sub-mesothelial layer, adjacent to the peritoneum mesothelial cells, is amphiphilic on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining but can be visualized through elastic staining. One of the important benefits of elastic staining is that it makes it easy to determine whether tumor cells have invaded beyond the elastic lamina. This helps in examining the extent of peritoneal surface invasion, thereby distinguishing the pT3 and pT4 stages in gastrointestinal cancer. In this study, we present a protocol to identify elastic fibers in the formalin-fixed,

Atomic resolution of structural changes in elastic crystals of copper(II) acetylacetonate.

Single crystals are typically brittle, inelastic materials. Such mechanical responses limit their use in practical applications, particularly in flexible electronics and optical devices. Here we describe single crystals of a well-known coordination compound-copper(II) acetylacetonate-that are flexible enough to be reversibly tied into a knot. Mechanical measurements indicate that the crystals exhibit an elasticity similar to that of soft materials such as nylon, and thus display properties normally associated with both hard and soft matter. Using microfocused synchrotron radiation, we mapped t…

Three-Dimensional Computer-Assisted Two-Layer Elastic Models of the Face.

To make three-dimensional computer-assisted elastic models for the face, we decided on five requirements: (1) an elastic texture like skin and subcutaneous tissue; (2) the ability to take pen marking for incisions; (3) the ability to be cut with a surgical knife; (4) the ability to keep stitches in place for a long time; and (5) a layered structure. After testing many elastic solvents, we have made realistic three-dimensional computer-assisted two-layer elastic models of the face and cleft lip from the computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging stereolithographic data. The surface lay
