Biomechanical Differences Between Japanese and American Professional Baseball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Although baseball injuries are common in both Japan and the United States, the majority of pitching injuries in Japanese players occur at the shoulder, whereas most pitching injuries in American players occur at the elbow. A biomechanical comparison between Japanese and American pitchers may help to identify the different injury mechanisms. HYPOTHESIS: Japanese pitchers produce greater shoulder kinetics whereas American pitchers generate greater elbow kinetics. Also, kinematic differences will be found between the 2 groups, including longer stride and greater lead knee flexion for

Sport-Related Injuries in Portuguese Padel Practitioners and Their Characteristics.

Background and Objectives: Padel is becoming an increasingly popular sport, yet epidemiological data on sport-related musculoskeletal injury in Portuguese practitioners are limited. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive epidemiological analysis of Padel practitioners in Portugal to fill this gap. Materials and Methods: A nationwide self-reported questionnaire was administered to Portuguese Padel practitioners. The questionnaire covered sociodemographic, occupational, and health-related items. Results: Overall, 69.2% of respondents reported at least one lifetime Padel injury (mean 2.1 ± 1

Acute ulnar nerve entrapment after closed reduction of a posterior fracture dislocation of the elbow: a case report.

We present the case of a child who had a posterior-lateral elbow dislocation with an intact ulnar nerve documented before an attempted reduction, with subsequent loss of ulnar nerve function after the elbow was reduced.Dislocations of the elbow in children represent only 3% to 6% of all elbow injuries. Posterior elbow dislocations are the most common, with more than one half involving an associated fracture about the elbow. The most common associated fracture is the medial epicondyle. Even though it is known that injury to the ulnar nerve can occur in elbow dislocations, we found only 1 other …

[Trendy inline skating sports. Pattern of injuries and groups at risk].

One hundred and eighty-two patients presented with 200 inline-skating injuries over a 30-month period. Of these, 14% were admitted to hospital, 10% required operative treatment. Fractures (49%), contusions/lacerations (27%) and capsular/ligamentuous injuries (16%) were the most prevalent types of injury. Children had an even higher risk of sustaining fractures (62%). Falling on the extended arm caused 44% of all injuries. Thirteen percent resulted from torque mechanisms of the leg, whereas direct trauma to elbow or knee (5% each) were uncommon injury mechanisms. Injuries of the elbow, forearm,

Fracture-dislocation of the elbow: diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

There are two main goals for the surgeon treating injuries around the elbow joint: the maintenance of a stable, concentric reduction of the joint and the initiation of early motion to help prevent stiffness and maximize functional out-come. The presence of a fracture decreases joint stability and increases the risk for early subluxation or dislocation with motion. Operative repair thus is indicated for most of these injuries to restore sufficient osseoligamentous support to allow safe, early motion and provide a stable functional elbow in the long term.

Transverse divergent dislocation of elbow in a child: a case report and review of current literature.

We present a case report on transverse divergent dislocation of the elbow, highlighting the spatial relation among the proximal radius, ulna, and distal humerus in this rare pediatric elbow injury and reasons leading to misinterpretation of radiographs. Elbow dislocation is a rare injury in children. It comprises only 6% of pediatric elbow injuries. Most pure dislocations are posterior, but they can occur in any direction. Divergent dislocation of the elbow is a subgroup of posterior dislocation, which is extremely rare. It is important that the pediatric emergency physician is aware, able to …

Patterns of orthopedic injuries associated with increasing e-scooter-related trauma: A retrospective observational study with a 4-year evaluation from a tertiary center in Istanbul, Turkey.

The increasing use of electric scooters (e-scooters) has been accompanied by an increase in the number of traumas. Noncompliance with regulations and the effectiveness of legal measures remain subjects of ongoing debate. This study aimed to investigate the demographic characteristics of patients with e-scooter-related orthopedic injuries, temporal distribution of trauma, and patterns of these injuries. We retrospectively evaluated 534 patients with e-scooter-related injuries who were referred to the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology between January 2020 and October 2023. Variables suc

Partial ulnar nerve transfer to the branch of the long head of the triceps to recover elbow extension in C5, C6 and C7 brachial plexus palsy.

Elbow flexion is the first goal in upper partial brachial plexus palsy treatment. However, elbow extension is essential for daily living activities. To recover this function, one fascicle of ulnar nerve can be transferred to the branch of the long head of the triceps, but this procedure has been previously published in only two patients. The goal of our study is to assess a larger series of transfers of one fascicle of ulnar nerve to the branch of the long head of the triceps to help patients recover elbow extension. Ten male patients with C5, C6 and C7 brachial plexus injuries underwent opera

Transolecranon Surgical Approach for Radial Head Arthroplasty.

The authors propose a novel surgical technique for complex fractures of the elbow necessitating a radial head arthroplasty (RHA) that spares … uch as the Kaplan or Kocher approach and their potential hazards, for placement of a RHA in complex elbow injuries. It also allows for accurate radial head sizing because of direct visualization of the relationship of the radial head with the lateral coronoid facet. During the past 5 years, the transolecranon approach has been used at the authors' institution fo …

Simple elbow dislocations: evaluation, management, and outcomes.

Elbow dislocations are common athletic injuries and occur during a fall onto an outstretched hand as a combination of axial-compressive and rotational-shear forces are conducted across the elbow joint. Simple dislocations are those that involve purely ligamentous injury, while complex dislocations include periarticular fractures. The initial assessment, radiographic evaluation, and on-field treatment of these injuries is discussed. Multiple reduction techniques are described with the patient positioned both supine and prone. Definitive management involves primarily nonoperative treatment with

Dislocation of the elbow with fractures of the coronoid process and radial head.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to evaluate the factors relevant to prognosis after operative treatment of an elbow dislocation/fracture involving the coronoid process and the radial head. In 30-50% of cases, elbow dislocations are accompanied by concomitant bony injuries. Here, the ulnar coronoid process and the radial head are particularly crucial to the stability of the elbow joint. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, 27 out of 37 patients who were treated surgically in our clinic between 1990 and 1999 for elbow dislocation with involvement of the coronoid process and t

Pitch Clock Implementation and Its Differential Associations With Injury Distribution and Recovery Duration for Major League Baseball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Major League Baseball (MBL) implemented the pitch clock in 2023 to accelerate game pace. Previous studies examined injury frequency but did not assess recovery duration or account for behavioral adaptations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate associations between pitch clock implementation, recovery duration, and injury distribution. HYPOTHESIS: Recovery duration would be longer in the post-clock era, particularly among starters, elbow injuries would comprise a greater proportion of upper extremity injuries, and these associations would persist after accounting for the conc…

A rare case of an Essex-Lopresti injury secondary to a gunshot wound.

BACKGROUND: Radial head fractures are one of the more common fractures of the body, and the most common fractures around the elbow. CASE REPORT: While these can present in isolation, concomitant injuries to the ulna, elbow joint and surrounding ligaments, interosseous membrane, proximal radioulnar joint, and distal radioulnar joint can also occur. It is imperative that the treating surgeon rules out any concomitant injuries when evaluating a patient with a radial head fracture as the treatment options vary greatly depending on the structures which are damaged. CONCLUSIONS: Radial head resect

Common Imaging Mistakes and Pitfalls of the Elbow: Focus on Pediatrics and Young Adults.

This review covers physiologic changes that occur with normal elbow development, imaging considerations, and common elbow pathologies, subdivided into those involving the medial, lateral, and posterior compartments. At the medial elbow, medial epicondylar apophysitis and avulsion factures are more common among skeletally immature individuals, whereas ulnar collateral ligament injuries are more common among skeletally mature young adults. At the lateral elbow, radial head subluxation, capitellar osteochondritis dissecans, and Panner's disease are more common among skeletally immature individual

Advanced elbow arthroscopy: Tips and tricks.

Elbow arthroscopy can be a challenge, however, indications and benefits compared to open elbow surgery are rapidly evolving. The elbow has seemed to lag behind other joints including the knee, shoulder, ankle and the hip, both in number of cases and in widespread acceptance, as a joint amenable to arthroscopic management. This has occurred despite literature demonstrating successful utilization of arthroscopy in the management of a variety of injuries. The purpose of this review is to clarify and expand the indications for arthroscopy of the elbow in 2021. We will also offer tips and tricks to

Common disorders of the elbow in athletes and musicians.

This article discusses the importance of the elbow in both sports and performing arts. Functional, painless motion of the elbow is essential to achieve this end because although most objects of play are controlled by the hand, freedom of movement at the elbow allows one to place the hand in space. Anatomy and biomechanics of the wrist as well as common sports-related injuries are highlighted. In addition, wrist disorders affecting musicians are reviewed.

Coronoid fractures of the elbow.

Coronoid fractures of the ulna are relatively uncommon, yet critical injuries to recognize. They often occur in association with elbow dislocations and play an important role in elbow instability. Historic recommendations are to fix all large coronoid fracture fragments, as well as small fracture fragments associated with instability. There is little data regarding management of small coronoid fracture fragments. The coronoid process acts as a bony buttress to prevent posterior dislocation and has three soft tissue insertions which lend stability as well: the anterior joint capsule of the elbo

Clinical findings in C5-C6 and C5-C7 root palsies with brachial plexus traction lesions.

Stretch injuries of the C5-C7 roots of the brachial plexus traditionally have been associated with palsies of shoulder abduction/external rotation, elbow flexion/extension, and wrist, thumb, and finger extension. Based on current myotome maps we hypothesized that, as far as motion is concerned, palsies involving C5-C6 and C5-C7 root injuries should be similar. In 38 patients with upper-type palsies of the brachial plexus, we examined for correlations between clinical findings and root injury level, as documented by CT tomomyeloscan. Contrary to commonly held beliefs, C5-C7 root injuries were n
