BACKGROUND: The connection between the ventrolateral frontal and temporoparietal cortices has an important role in language function on the language-dominant side and spatial awareness on the nondominant side. However, the laterality of these pathways remains controversial. We investigated the laterality of this connection using corticocortical-evoked potentials (CCEPs).
METHODS: From April 2014 to March 2016, 27 patients who had undergone frontotemporal craniotomy were enrolled. With the patients under general anesthesia, subdural electrodes were placed on both frontal and temporoparietal ar

Schizophrenia is characterized by behavioral symptoms, brain function impairments and electroencephalographic (EEG) changes. Dysregulation of immune responses and oxidative imbalance underpins this mental disorder. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the typical antipsychotic chlorpromazine (CP) alone or combined with the natural antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on changes in the hippocampal average spectral power induced by ketamine (KET). Three days after stereotactic implantation of electrodes, male Wistar rats were divided into groups treated for 10 days with saline (c

Cannabinoid and serotonin systems regulate many biological processes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the functional interaction between the cannabinoid and serotonergic systems of the primary somatosensory region (S1) of the brain in epileptiform activity caused by penicillin. The ACEA (an agonist of CB1 receptor), AM‑251 (an antagonist of CB1 receptor), 8‑OH‑DPAT (an agonist of 5‑HT1A receptor) and WAY‑100635 (an antagonist of 5‑HT1A receptor) were administered into the S1 after the same site administration of penicillin in urethane‑anesthetized rats. Deficient prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reaction after injection of the dopamine receptor agonist apomorphine has been experimentally used to model certain aspects of Tourette syndrome (TS) in rats. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the centromedian-parafascicular (CM-Pf) complex alleviates tics in patients with TS. The CM-Pf projects to striatal regions, which might mediate the effect of DBS via the cortico basal-ganglia circuitry implicated in the pathophysiology of TS. We tested the effect of CM-Pf DBS on apomorphine-induced deficient PPI and on striatal neuronal activity

PURPOSE: We analyzed consecutive cases of a large cohort of the spectrum of malformations of cortical development (MCDs) including focal cortical dysplasias (FCDs) who underwent presurgical evaluation through our epilepsy program from January 2000-December 2010. We analyzed factors predicting surgical candidacy, predictors of seizure outcome and reasons for deferring surgery.
METHODS: 148 patients with MCD underwent detailed presurgical evaluation and 69 were operated. MCD was diagnosed based on characteristic findings in MRI and re-confirmation by histopathology in operated patients. Post-op

Recognition of faces and written words is associated with category-specific brain activation in the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT). However, topological and functional relationships between face-selective and word-selective vOT regions remain unclear. In this study, we collected data from patients with intractable epilepsy who underwent high-density recording of surface field potentials in the vOT. "Faces" and "letterstrings" induced outstanding category-selective responses among the 24 visual categories tested, particularly in high-γ band powers. Strikingly, within-hemispheric analysis

Intraoperative localization of the central sulcus (CS) using somatosensory evoked-potential (SSEP) phase reversal is routinely performed with sparse subdural strip electrodes. We evaluated whether a multi-array, 4096-channel surface micro-electrocorticography (μECoG) configuration could provide dense two-dimensional sampling of stimulus-dependent sensorimotor responses within a standard neurosurgical workflow.
Approach. Four Precision Neuroscience Layer 7 μECoG arrays (1024 platinum electrodes per array on a flexible polyimide substrate, 400 μm electrode pitch, ~1.5 cm² active area per arr…

OBJECTIVE: Reviewing our experience in intracranial video-EEG monitoring in the presurgical evaluation of patients with refractory epilepsy.
METHODS: We report on 62 out of 202 (31%) patients with refractory epilepsy, who underwent a long term video-EEG monitoring (LTM). The epileptogenic zone (EZ) was localised either based on the results of LTM or after intracranial EEG recordings from depth, subdural or foramen ovale electrodes. The decision on the location of the electrodes was based upon semiology of the seizures, EEG findings and the lesions visualised in MRI brain scan. Intraoperative

Resistance to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is a major clinical problem. The overexpression of P-glycoprotein (Pgp), one of the main transporters limiting the entry of xenobiotics into the brain, is among the factors contributing to the AED resistance. Presently, there is no consensus on the interaction of carbamazepine (CBZ) with the Pgp. This study investigates the effect of the Pgp inhibitor verapamil on the anticonvulsant effect of CBZ and its nanoparticulate formulation in the rat model of isoniazid-induced epilepsy. Verapamil significantly increased the anticonvulsant effect of CBZ and redu

Spreading depolarizations are characterized by abrupt, near-complete breakdown of the transmembrane ion gradients, neuronal oedema, mitochondrial depolarization, glutamate excitotoxicity and activity loss (depression). Spreading depolarization induces either transient hyperperfusion in normal tissue; or hypoperfusion (inverse coupling = spreading ischaemia) in tissue at risk for progressive injury. The concept of the spreading depolarization continuum is critical since many spreading depolarizations have intermediate characteristics, as opposed to the two extremes of spreading depolarization i

Dopaminergic medications ameliorate many of the motor impairments of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, parkinsonism is often only partially reversed by these drugs, and they can have significant side effects. Therefore, a need remains for novel treatments of parkinsonism. Studies in rodents and preliminary clinical evidence have shown that T-type calcium channel (TTCC) antagonists have antiparkinsonian effects. However, most of the available studies utilized nonselective agents. We now evaluated whether systemic injections of the specific TTCC blocker ML218 have antiparkinsonian effects in MP

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is prevalent in China, which is the second greatest contributor to the global tuberculosis burden. Tuberculosis meningitis (TBM) is the most severe disease form but few reports describe long-term clinical outcomes and prognostic factors. Thus, we studied these features in Chinese TBM patients.
METHODS: A retrospective follow-up study was used to collect clinical features and outcomes of adult TB meningitis at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from June 2012 to August 2015. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis were used to identify

Management of MRI-negative patients with intractable focal epilepsy after failed surgery is particularly challenging. In this study, we aim to investigate whether MRI post-processing could identify relevant targets for the re-evaluation of MRI-negative patients who failed the initial resective surgery. We examined a consecutive series of 56 MRI-negative patients who underwent resective surgery and had recurring seizures at 1-year follow-up. T1-weighted volumetric sequence from the pre-surgical MRI was used for voxel-based MRI post-processing which was implemented in a morphometric analysis pro

Neurophysiological recordings are dominated by arhythmical activity whose spectra can be characterised by power-law functions, and on this basis are often referred to as reflecting scale-free brain dynamics (1/fβ). Relatively little is known regarding the neural generators and temporal dynamics of this arhythmical behaviour compared to rhythmical behaviour. Here we used Irregularly Resampled AutoSpectral Analysis (IRASA) to quantify β, in both the high (5-100 Hz, βhf) and low frequency bands (0.1-2.5 Hz, βlf) in MEG/EEG/ECoG recordings and to separate arhythmical from rhythmical modes of activ

Cannabinoids have been suggested as a therapeutic target for a variety of brain disorders. Despite the presence of their receptors throughout the auditory system, little is known about how cannabinoids affect auditory function. We sought to determine whether administration of arachidonyl-2'-chloroethylamide (ACEA), a highly-selective CB1 agonist, could attenuate a variety of auditory effects caused by prior administration of salicylate, and potentially treat tinnitus. We recorded cortical resting-state activity, auditory-evoked cortical activity and auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), from ch
