Optimal Electroencephalogram and Electrooculogram Signal Combination for Deep Learning-Based Sleep Staging.

OBJECTIVE: The traditional sleep staging involves manual scoring of electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), and electromyogram signals during polysomnography (PSG), which is laborious and susceptible to human errors. Previous studies have explored several automated sleep staging methods utilizing fewer EEG signals, for which deep-learning methods have shown promising results. Despite the availability of various signals and signal combinations in PSGs, the performance of different signal combinations for accurate sleep staging is not fully explored. We hypothesize that various EEG s

Electrophysiological Activity from the Eye Muscles, Cerebellum and Cerebrum During Reflexive (Classical Pavlovian) Versus Voluntary (Ivanov-Smolensky) Eye-Blink Conditioning.

We report an experiment to investigate the role of the cerebellum and cerebrum in motor learning of timed movements. Eleven healthy human subjects were recruited to perform two experiments, the first was a classical eye-blink conditioning procedure with an auditory tone as conditional stimulus (CS) and vestibular unconditional stimulus (US) in the form of a double head-tap. In the second experiment, subjects were asked to blink voluntarily in synchrony with the double head-tap US preceded by a CS, a form of Ivanov-Smolensky conditioning in which a command or instruction is associated with the

Sparse classification of discriminant nystagmus features using combined video-oculography tests and pupil tracking for common vestibular disorder recognition.

Vertigo is a common sign related to a problem with the brain or vestibular system. Detection of ocular nystagmus can be a support indicator to distinguish different vestibular disorders. In order to get reliable and accurate real time measurements from nystagmus response, video-oculography (VOG) plays an important role in the daily clinical examination. However, vestibular diseases present a large diversity in their characteristics that leads to many complications for usual analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel automated approach to achieve both selection and classification of nystagmus

Block design enhances classification of 3D reach targets from electroencephalographic signals.

To date, decoding accuracy of actual or imagined pointing movements to targets in 3D space from electroencephalographic (EEG) signals has remained modest. The reason may pertain to the fact that these movements activate essentially the same neural networks. In this study, we aimed at testing whether repetitive pointing movements to each of the targets promotes the development of segregated neural patterns, resulting in enhanced decoding accuracy. Six human subjects generated slow or fast repetitive pointing movements with their right dominant arm to one of five targets distributed in 3D space,

Photopsia and a temporal visual field defect.

A 30-year-old woman presented with intermittent photopsia, a temporal visual field defect below the horizontal in her left eye, and flu-like symptoms. Slit-lamp and fundus examinations were unremarkable. Humphrey 30-2 threshold perimetry and 120-point screening visual field demonstrated blind spot enlargement of the left eye and a normal field in the right eye. Fundus autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography of the macula, full-field electroretinogram, electrooculogram, and multifocal electroretinogram were normal. Swept-source optical coherence tomography scan of the left optic nerve sh

Mastication-induced vertigo and nystagmus.

Even though trigeminovestibular connections are well established in animals, mastication-induced dizziness has been described only as a vascular steal phenomenon in humans. We determined induction or modulation of nystagmus in two index patients with mastication-induced vertigo, 12 normal controls, and 52 additional patients with peripheral (n = 38, 26 with vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis and 12 with Meniere's disease) or central (n = 14, 11 with Wallenberg syndrome, two with cerebellar infarction, and one with pontine infarction) vestibulopathy during their acute or compensated phase. Relationship of slow-phase velocity to visual acuity in infantile nystagmus associated with albinism.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between slow-phase velocity of nystagmus and visual acuity in children with albinism. METHODS: Twelve children with infantile nystagmus associated with albinism had eye movements recorded by binocular video-oculography (10 patients) or by scleral search coil (2 patients). In children younger than 3 years of age visual acuities was assessed by means of Teller acuity cards and corrected for age. Histograms of horizontal eye velocities were fit by a gamma distribution in all patients (r2>0.85). The velocity at the peak of the gamma distribution was compar

Contextual priming in grapheme-color synesthetes and yoked controls: 400 msec in the life of a synesthete.

Grapheme-color synesthesia is a heritable trait where graphemes ("2") elicit the concurrent perception of specific colors (red). Researchers have questioned whether synesthetic experiences are meaningful or simply arbitrary associations and whether these associations are perceptual or conceptual. To address these fundamental questions, ERPs were recorded as 12 synesthetes read statements such as "The Coca-Cola logo is white and 2," in which the final grapheme induced a color that was either contextually congruous (red) or incongruous ("...white and 7," for a synesthetes who experienced 7 as gr

Motion sickness induced by otolith stimulation is correlated with otolith-induced eye movements.

This article addresses the relationships between motion sickness (MS) and three-dimensional (3D) ocular responses during otolith stimulation. A group of 19 healthy subjects was tested for motion sickness during a 16 min otolith stimulation induced by off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) (constant velocity 60 degrees /s, frequency 0.16 Hz). For each subject, the MS induced during the session was quantified, and based on this quantification, the subjects were divided into two groups of less susceptible (MS-), and more susceptible (MS+) subjects. The angular eye velocity induced by the otolith stimu

Alcohol- and light-induced electro-oculographic responses in age-related macular degeneration & central serous chorioretinopathy. alcohol- and light-induced EOG responses in ARMD & CSC.

The non-photic electro-oculographic (EOG) response induced by alcohol has been proposed as an indicator of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) integrity, and reported to be abnormal in age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). To evaluate this proposal, we have measured the alcohol-EOG as well as the ISCEV-standard EOG in patients with ARMD (n=11 patients, 4 eyes with drusen, 8 eyes with 'dry' and 7 eyes with 'wet' lesions) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC, n=11 patients, 7 eyes with active and 6 eyes with inactive lesions), compared with 29 normal controls. We recorded the alcohol-induce

Information processing in severe disorders of consciousness: vegetative state and minimally conscious state.

OBJECTIVE: To study the presence of electrophysiological indicators of remaining cortical functions in patients with persistent vegetative state (PVS) and minimally conscious state (MCS). Previous electrophysiological and PET data indicated that some PVS patients have partially intact cortical processing functions. However, it remains unclear whether the reported patients were representative for PVS population or just some exceptional cases. METHODS: Event-related brain responses to stimuli of different complexity levels, recorded in 98 patients with extremely severe diffuse brain injuries, 5

Sensitivity of electrophysiological activity from medial frontal cortex to utilitarian and performance feedback.

A recent study has reported the observation in humans of an event-related brain potential component that is sensitive to the value of outcomes in a gambling task. This component, labeled medial frontal negativity (MFN), was most pronounced following monetary losses as opposed to monetary gains. In this study, we investigate the relationship between the MFN and the error-related negativity (ERN), a component elicited by feedback indicating incorrect choice performance. We argue that the two components can be understood in terms of a recently proposed theory that predicts the occurrence of such

Adaptation of the horizontal vestibuloocular reflex in pilots.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The vestibular function in pilots has been reported as being different to that in other, normal subjects. However, there is little evidence as to why and when this occurs, and its cause is still in doubt. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in vestibular function in student pilots attending an elementary flight course, and in other active pilots, through the use of the slow harmonic acceleration (SHA) test and to verify the occurrence and timing of any vestibular function changes. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional and prospective group design. METHODS: The six st

Periodic, profound peripheral vasoconstriction--a new marker of obstructive sleep apnea.

We report a novel approach to the determination of sleep apnea based on measuring the peripheral circulatory responses in a primary condition of disordered breathing. The apparatus is a finger plethysmograph coupled to a constant volume, variable pressure, pneumatic system. The plethysmograph's tip (measurement site) is composed of two parallel opposing longitudinal half thimbles, which is attached to a contiguous annular cuff. Each compartment consists of an internal membrane surrounded by an outer rigid wall. These provide a uniform pressure field and impart a two-point locking action preven

[Benign postural vertigo and nystagmus of the horizontal semicircular canal].

Benign paroxysmal vertigo and nystagmus are induced not only by the posterior but also by the horizontal semicircular canal. Benign positional nystagmus of the horizontal canal is more often observed than was previously thought. In 10 patients we analyzed the characteristics and the variability of nystagmus which accompanies positional vertigo of the horizontal canal. There are two forms of nystagmus: primary-geotropic, most often paroxysmal nystagmus (7 patients), and primary-apogeotropic, non-paroxysmal nystagmus (3 patients). Interestingly, in 2 patients with the primary-apogeotropic form t

Ophthalmologic findings in Usher syndrome type 2A.

Thirty-seven patients, comprising 24 familial cases and 13 isolated patients with Usher syndrome type II (USH2), underwent ophthalmologic examination. Based on the degree of hearing loss, normal vestibular function, and gene-linkage analysis, familial cases were assumed to have USH2A. An analysis of genetic heterogeneity failed to reveal the presence of a second locus in the Dutch population. Although the patients appear to belong to a genetically homogeneous group, remarkable ophthalmologic variability was found. Corrected visual acuity decreased with age and remarkable differences in visual

Vestibular function and sensory interaction in space flight.

The vestibular system and vestibulo-visual interaction were examined in 11 astronauts by the electrooculographic (EOG) method during short- and long-term flights on days 2, 3, 5, 9, 22, 50, 164, and 169 (experiments OPTOKINES and LABYRINTH). In space (flight days 2 and 3), they showed enhanced spontaneous vertical nystagmus, and disorders of tracking of vertical and diagonal movements of the stimulus which improved after active head movements. Early increasing of the reactivity of the cupulo-endolymphatic system (flight days 2-3) was replaced after 5 days of flight with a reduction of the vest
