Knowing 7 x 8, but not the meaning of 'elephant': evidence for the dissociation between numerical and non-numerical semantic knowledge.

Patients affected by semantic dementia (SD) and other severe cognitive deficits may show preserved numerical skills, including the retrieval of multiplication facts from long-term memory. No studies so far specifically investigated the network of arithmetic facts in semantic dementia. Thus, it is unknown whether preserved multiplication in SD truly reflects intact semantic knowledge or preserved retrieval of verbal sequences (just as the recitation of rhymes or poems). In the present study a patient (SG) with SD underwent an extensive assessment of number processing and calculation abilities.

Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of cloacal exstrophy associated with myelocystocele complex by the 'elephant trunk-like' image and review of the literature.

A case of cloacal exstrophy (CE) was detected by ultrasound as early as 22 weeks of gestation in association with myelocystocele complex, an unusual form of occult spinal dysraphism often associated with such a disease. The ultrasonographic diagnosis was made through the detection of a wavy cord-like segment of soft tissue protruding from the anterior abdominal wall, just below the umbilical cord insertion, strongly resembling the trunk of an elephant. Our article enforces the suggestion that the ultrasound elephant trunk-like image should be added to the existing major criteria for making pre

[Early and mid-term results of elephant trunk method using stent graft during total arch replacement].

Combined therapy of stent graft implantation and open surgery is an alternative method for aortic aneurysm. Seven patients with aortic aneurysm [annulo aortic ectasia (AAE) + Marfan syndrome (4), AAE + arch aneurysm + s/o Behçet disease (1), acute dissected aneurysm (type A) (1), thoracic aortic true aneurysm (1)] were successfully treated by means of elephant trunk method using a stent graft during total arch replacement. There was no complication related to the stent graft during the perioperative period. Postoperative computed tomographic scans were performed 1 and 6 months later. There was

A cardiopulmonary bypass perfusion technique for the surgical repair of aortic type I dissections requiring the elephant trunk procedure.

The effect of cerebral and spinal cord protection by a modified perfusion technique during the elephant trunk procedure was assessed. Between 1997 and 1998, six patients underwent selective cerebral perfusion (SCP) and lower half of the body perfusion (LBP), in which the right subclavian and left femoral arteries were separately cannulated and perfused by individual pump heads. Moderate systemic cooling was used (nasal temp. 20-30 degrees C; rectal temp. 23-26 degrees C). The open distal aortic repair was performed using only the selective cerebral perfusion; while the aortic arch reconstructi

[Surgical treatment for chronic dissecting aneurysm (DeBakey type I)--a case using "elephant trunk" and "aortic tailoring"].

We present a surgical case of a 54-year-old man with chronic dissecting aortic aneurysm (Type I). At the first operation, ascending aorta and aortic arch were replaced with a tube graft under cardiopulmonary bypass and selective cerebral perfusion. Elephant trunk method was employed for the second operation. At the second operation, graft replacement of the proximal two-thirds of the descending aorta was performed, and the lower third of the descending aorta was tailored. Aortic tailoring consisted of the longitudinal aortomy and the removal of the initimal flap from the distal part of the des

Hybrid pin penetration open stent technique: Retrospective study of a new approach to frozen elephant trunk procedure.

Total arch replacement using the frozen elephant trunk technique for acute type A aortic dissection involving the aortic arch remains technically demanding because of complex supra-aortic branch reconstruction and prolonged circulatory arrest. We developed a modified fenestrated open stent technique, termed the hybrid pin-penetration open stent (HIPPOS) technique, to simplify branch reconstruction while minimizing supra-aortic vessel manipulation. We retrospectively reviewed 15 consecutive patients who underwent total arch replacement using HIPPOS between May 2024 and May 2026 at a single inst

Clinical Outcomes of Cuff Anastomosis Combined with Single-Branched Frozen Elephant Trunk for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection.

BACKGROUND: Total arch replacement combined with the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique has become the predominant surgical strategy for acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD); however, reconstruction of arch vessel perfusion remains technically demanding and often results in prolonged ischemia associated with branch vessel reconstruction. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included all patients who were diagnosed with ATAAD and underwent surgical treatment between January 2024 and June 2025. Patients were allocated to either the cuff anastomosis combined with a single-branche

Weighing the Risks: The Impact of Body Mass Index on Outcomes After Frozen Elephant Trunk Aortic Arch Repair.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of body mass index (BMI) on post- operative outcomes in patients undergoing aortic arch repair with the frozen elephant trunk technique (FET). Materials and Methods: A total of 387 patients who underwent an FET procedure between 04/2014 and 11/2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into four groups according to BMI: underweight (BMI < 18.5, n = 12) normal weight (BMI: 18.5 to <25, n = 150), overweight (BMI: 25 to <30, n = 154), and obese (BMI: ≥30, n = 71). Patient characteristics and clinical outcomes were c

An expanding human footprint drives escalating human-elephant conflict across a transboundary African landscape through 2085.

Rapid land-use change is compressing the space between people and wildlife at an unprecedented pace, elevating concerns of conflict between people and keystone megafauna such as the African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana). However, the underlying drivers of human-elephant conflict (HEC) are often inferred but not causally identified, and forecasting under future scenarios is limited, restricting our ability to anticipate where and why conflict will intensify. Using a dataset on conflict events from 2004 to 2020 across a transboundary landscape in Southern Africa, we integrate causal infe

DNA purity over yield: optimizing extraction and PCR in degraded Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) fecal samples.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive genetic monitoring is essential for conserving the endangered Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). However, fecal DNA is highly susceptible to degradation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibition. OBJECTIVE: Various DNA extraction techniques and optimized downstream PCR parameters were compared to establish a workflow that balances DNA quantity and quality. METHODS: A modified phenol-chloroform-isoamyl alcohol (PCI) protocol was compared with a commercial extraction kit using 35 unpreserved, degraded fecal specimens to evaluate the trade-offs between DNA yield and

Ready to dive? Early constraints help juvenile southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) acclimatize to aquatic life.

Breath-holding foraging implies different adaptations to limit oxygen (O2) depletion and maximize foraging time. Physiological adjustments can be mediated through O2 consumption, driven by muscle mitochondria, which can also produce reactive oxygen species during reoxygenation. Southern elephant seals spend months foraging at sea, diving for up to 1 h. Pups transition abruptly to aquatic life after a post-weaning period, during which they fast and progressively increase their activity, making this period critical for the development of an adaptive response to oxygen restriction and oxidative s
