A standardised test of psychopathology (CCEI) was administered to tinnitus sufferers some of whom also complained of dizziness. It was predicted that the complaint of dizziness would be associated with higher scores on the anxiety scales of the CCEI and this was confirmed. Subjects complaining of dizziness obtained much higher scores on 'phobic' and 'somatic' anxiety scales in particular. However, the complaint of dizziness was completely uncorrelated with objective assessments of balance and there was no effect of balance, objectively assessed, in moderating the association between the compla

Emotional communication patterns characterizing interactions between partners in close relationships were investigated by asking 29 couples who were married or living together to engage in a videotaped discussion of a problem they were having in their relationship. In a later experimental session, partners identified specific communications that they believed had an important influence on the discussion and then rated the communications in terms of the feelings the communicator intended to convey and the recipient's reactions. Partners attempted to reciprocate both the positive and negative fe

The literature on the place of hostile emotion in obsessional neurosis is reviewed. In the main study 11 obsessional neurotic and 11 depressive patients matched for severity of illness were given questionnaires to measure experienced hostility and anger, and a repertory grid of standard form. The obsessional group showed a qualitatively distinct correlational pattern of measured aspects of hostility-anger, including a high correlation between outwardly directed aspects of hostility and anger; this pattern was replicated in a validation study. In contrast, the obsessional group was not differen

An experimental model for emotional stress is described. Emotional stress can affect hearing if severe enough or if it lasts long enough. The noxious effect on the ear can be explained by the high level of blood catecholamines and exaggerated activity of the cochlear sympathetic innervation.

Emotional well-being is a multifactorial concept, which comprises not only life quality of human individuals, but also their mental and physical health. It encompasses several key parameters, many of which have behavioral representation in daily life. These include finding positive meaning of life events, ability to maintain supportive and caring social interactions, reward-oriented behavior, and many others. It is well-known that the behavioral phenotype is tightly bound to certain physiological and metabolic factors, among which sphingolipid (SL) balance of the organism and especially centra

Most basic and clinical research on chronic pain has traditionally focused on the mechanisms and treatment of physical pain resulting from peripheral injuries in individual animals or humans. However, growing evidence highlights the importance of emotional pain, a form of distress that extends beyond the individual to include family members, partners, and friends affected by another's suffering. In this review, I summarize recent advances in animal models of empathic pain and explore cortical synaptic mechanisms underlying this form of social or emotional pain. I compare the cortical processes

Humans are fundamentally cooperative beings whose survival and success depend on prosocial behavior, including with non-kin and strangers. E … with development. We conclude by outlining a developmental proposal for the emergence of prosocial emotions, discussing methodological and cultural challenges, and highlighting directions for future research. Together, the evidence suggests that early-emerging affective processes work in concert to enable even young children to navigate the cooperative la …

INTRODUCTION: Understanding emotional wellbeing in neurodivergent populations remains a critical yet underexplored area in psychological research.
METHODS: This study employs AgileBrain, a novel assessment rooted in a neuroscience-informed model of human motivation, to evaluate emotional activation, valence, and unmet emotional needs across a large and diverse sample of adults reporting diagnosed neurodivergent conditions. The sample includes individuals self-identifying with ADHD, ASD, DCD, SID, SH, OCD, and other conditions, alongside a neurotypical comparison group.
RESULTS: Findings reve

The study of the amygdala and its role in the processing of emotions has become a common focus in neuroscience. The modern expansion of research in this area is partly due to the discovery of a subcortical pathway for the transmission of emotional information and the experimental paradigm that was developed to study it. Groundbreaking experiments during the 90s utilized anatomical, neurophysiological, and behavioral lesion studies in a rodent animal model to uncover the neural circuitry of a simple emotional memory. These studies demonstrated the essential role of a specific monosynaptic pathw…

IDENTIFYING AND ASSESSING EMOTIONAL INCEST. Among the various forms of sexual violence and child abuse incest, whose prevalence is likely underestimated, has well-documented and extensively studied pathological consequences. But what about the concept of emotional incest (l'incestuel), as defined by Paul-Claude Racamier? What dysfunctional family climate underpins this concept? How does it differ from incest itself? It refers to a closed-off enmeshed family dynamic marked by a failure to establish and maintain boundaries, leading to blurring of physical spaces, a confusion of psychological bou

Serotonergic psychedelics are being explored as treatments for a range of psychiatric conditions. Promising results in mood disorders indicate that their effects on emotional processing may play a central role in their therapeutic potential. However, mechanistic and clinical studies paint a complex picture of the impact of psychedelics on emotions and mood. Here, we review recent findings on the effects of psychedelics on emotion, emotional empathy, and mood. We discuss how psychedelics may impact long-term emotion management strategies, the significance of challenging experiences, and neuropl…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This manuscript aims to take stock of emotion dysregulation and personality disorder (PD) research, review key findings, and highlight future directions.
RECENT FINDINGS: Most emotion dysregulation research in PDs has focused on borderline personality disorder (BPD). BPD is characterized by high baseline negative emotion and the use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, but several other emotion dysregulation components may not be pervasively evident in the disorder. Trends in the BPD field that add nuance to the study of emotion dysregulation suggest that BPD may i

We studied comprehension of emotion versus concrete/abstract words in Down syndrome (DS). Study 1 compared 26 participants with DS and 26 typically developing (TD) children matched on verbal ability. Results showed no difference between groups. Study 2 assessed whether chronological age (CA) and (non)verbal abilities predicted developmental trajectories of comprehension in 36 children with DS and 143 TD children. For the latter, these variables predicted comprehension of all three word types. For the former, receptive vocabulary predicted comprehension of all word types, but CA and nonverbal r

The current article addresses the consequences of emotion regulation (ER) for mental health. A large body of research has shown that alterations in ER are related to psychological disorders across different diagnostic categories. Because of the apparent ubiquity of ER difficulties in psychopathology, several authors have proposed that ER should be regarded as a transdiagnostic process. This article critically examines evidence regarding alterations in the use of cognitive ER strategies as a transdiagnostic process. Cognitive ER strategies are examined as 1 example of several possible ER-relate
