Metabolites of selected neurotransmitters (5-HIAA, HVA and DOPAC) and beta-endorphin were measured in the CSF of 39 chronic pain patients and compared to controls. Twenty-four male subjects participated in a study in which the effect of feeding diets low in copper (1.03 mg/day) on plasma opiates was determined. The subjects were fed a low-copper diet for 11 wk with either starch or fructose as a major source of carbohydrate. Feeding low-copper diet decreased serum copper level significantly. The effects of naloxone and thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) were compared in an incremental air embolization model of experimental stroke in dogs. Naloxone treatment significantly improved the cortical somatosensory evoked response and had a beneficial effect on local cerebral blood flow, whereas TRH treatment had no effect on these variables.
