[Epidemiological studies on the poliomyelitis in Spain before the vaccination].

The eradication of polio in Spain is one of the most important health milestones of the twentieth century, not only for public health but also for the effect it had on scientific knowledge in our country, in the medical field. Knowledge of international literature by our epidemiologists and virologists, was important, as reflected in the studies of outbreaks, virological studies and clinical studies. For public health represented, throughout the twentieth century, an effort geared to make decisions based on scientific knowledge. For epidemiology represented the application of new ways of worki

An epidemiological study of mental disorders at pune, maharashtra.

BACKGROUND: The WHO Global Burden of Disease study estimates that mental and addictive disorders are among the most burdensome in the world, and their burden will increase over the next decades. The mental and behavioral disorders account for about 12% of the global burden of disease. However, these estimates and projections are based largely on literature review rather than cross-national epidemiological surveys. In India, little is known about the extent, severity and unmet need of treatment mental disorders. Thus, there was a need to carry out rigorously implemented general population surve

Congenital talipes equinovarus: an epidemiological study in Sicily.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) can present in 2 forms: "syndromic", in which other malformations exist, and the more common "idiopathic" form, where there are no other associated malformations. We analyzed the epidemiology of congenital talipes equinovarus in the Sicilian population, looking for potential etiological factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among the 801,324 live births recorded between January 1991 and December 2004, 827 cases were registered (560 males; M/F sex ratio: 2.1). Control infants were randomly selected from a historical cohort of live birt

A retrospective study of leukemia epidemiology in Northern Tunisia.

A hospital-based epidemiological study of leukemia was carried out in the northern part of Tunisia during a 5-year period, from 1999 to 2003. Of 402 Tunisians diagnosed with leukemia, 344 (85.6%) had acute leukemia and 58 (14.4%) had chronic leukemia. Age-specific incidence rates for acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) are described. The distribution of leukemia in the governorate of Nabeul was established. These results are useful for the organization and follow-up of medical care.

Dosimetric calculations for uranium miners for epidemiological studies.

Epidemiological studies on uranium miners are being carried out to quantify the risk of cancer based on organ dose calculations. Mathematical models have been applied to calculate the annual absorbed doses to regions of the lung, red bone marrow, liver, kidney and stomach for each individual miner arising from exposure to radon gas, radon progeny and long-lived radionuclides (LLR) present in the uranium ore dust and to external gamma radiation. The methodology and dosimetric models used to calculate these organ doses are described and the resulting doses for unit exposure to each source (radon

[The significance of epidemiological studies for progress of measles elimination].

The measles elimination goal in European Region should be reached by the target date of 2010. Measles elimination in Europe is achievable as demonstrated by countries that have maintained high vaccination coverage against that disease and have been free of indigenous measles for several years. However, suboptimal vaccination coverage against measles mumps and rubella (MMR) in parts of European Region threatens to delay measles elimination. This report summarizes the significance of epidemiological studies for progress of measles elimination.

Epidemiology of exfoliation syndrome in the Reykjavik Eye Study.

Exfoliation syndrome (XFS) is a major risk factor for glaucoma. It is characterized by a pathological accumulation of polymorphic fibrillar material in the anterior segment of the eye. It is likely that the increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) seen in XFS patients is at least in part because of flakes of material clogging up the trabecular meshwork, and thereby increasing the resistance to outflow and increasing IOP. XFS glaucoma progresses more rapidly, is more resistant to medical treatment and has worse prognosis than other glaucomas. The prevalence of XFS has been found to vary greatly b
