A microchip laser is realized on the basis of a monoclinic Tm,Ho-codoped KLu(WO₄)₂crystal cut for light propagation along the Ng optical indicatrix axis. This crystal cut provides positive thermal lens with extremely weak astigmatism, S/M = 4%. High sensitivity factors, M = dD/dP(abs), of 24.9 and 24.1 m(-1)/W for the mg- and pg- tangential planes are calculated with respect to the absorbed pump power. This report describes an endoscopic repair of a tracheal tear with a newly developed optical needle holder. No surgical access was necessary. A 71-year-old woman with a 5-cm gaping iatrogenic tracheal laceration and a distinctive mediastinal and subcutaneous emphysema was successfully repaired with an endotracheal running suture through a 14-mm rigid tracheoscope. Operation time was 105 minutes, and borderline jet ventilation was used to maintain oxygen saturation. Triplanar distal osteotomy is a safe procedure for mild-to-moderate hallux valgus deformity. It allows shortening and plantar displacement of the first metatarsal while correcting the intermetatarsal angle. However, complications such as dorsiflexion and excessive shortening of the first metatarsal have been associated with distal osteotomy. We describe a new device, designed by one of the authors (P.R.), that enables precise positioning of the Kirschner guide wire for the osteotomy cuts.

Conventional methods of capturing marmosets and other small nonhuman primates (NHPs) require prolonged physical contact between animals and their handlers. This causes NHPs to become stressed and exhausted and can put both animals and handlers at risk of injury or exposure to infectious diseases.
