Dopamine-mediated modulation of odour-evoked amygdala potentials during pavlovian conditioning.

Pavlovian conditioning results when an innocuous stimulus, such as an odour, is paired with a behaviourally relevant stimulus, such as a foot-shock, so that eventually the former stimulus alone will elicit the behavioural response of the latter. The lateral nucleus of the amygdala (LAT) is necessary for the emotional memory formation in this paradigm. Enhanced neuronal firing in LAT to conditioned stimuli emerge in parallel with the behavioural changes and are dependent on local dopamine. To study the changes in neuronal excitability and synaptic drive that contribute to the pavlovian conditio

Evaluation of traumatic cervical nerve root injuries by intraoperative evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate intraoperative evoked potentials as a diagnostic tool in traumatic brachial plexus injuries. METHODS: Thirteen patients with traumatic brachial plexus injuries were investigated by intradural nerve root inspection (n = 28 roots) via cervical hemilaminectomy to assess or rule out nerve root avulsion from the spinal cord. Two to 8 weeks later, evoked potentials from neck and scalp were recorded after direct electrical nerve root stimulation close to the vertebral foramen during operative brachial plexus repair via an anterior (supraclavicular and infraclavicular) approach…

Characteristics of tone burst-evoked myogenic potentials in the sternocleidomastoid muscles.

HYPOTHESIS: Optimum stimulus parameters for tone burst-evoked myogenic responses can be defined. These optimized responses will be similar to those evoked by clicks in the same subjects. BACKGROUND: Loud tones give rise to myogenic responses in the anterior neck muscles, similar to click-evoked potentials, and are likely to be saccular in origin. METHODS: Tone burst-evoked and click-evoked myogenic potentials were measured from the sternocleidomastoid muscles of 12 normal subjects (6 men, 6 women) during tonic activation. The effects of tone burst frequency and duration were systematically i…

Evaluation of the deformity in club foot by somatosensory evoked potentials.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) measure the conduction pathways from the periphery to the brain and can demonstrate the site of neurological impairment in a variety of locomotor conditions. SSEPs were studied in 44 children (64 feet) with surgically corrected club feet. Four children had unreproducible responses, 18 showed abnormal recordings and 22 showed normal responses. In a further 31 feet (21 children) subjected to motor electrophysiological tests, 16 (52%) were abnormal. Overall, 44 of 95 feet (46%) showed abnormal SSEPs or motor electrophysiological tests. Neurological abnormal…

Click evoked myogenic potentials in the differential diagnosis of acute vertigo.

OBJECTIVE: In response to loud clicks, a vestibular evoked potential can be recorded from sternocleidomastoid muscles, called "click evoked myogenic potential" (CEMP). This paper reports on the usefulness of CEMP in the differential diagnosis of acute vertigo of presumed vestibular origin. METHODS: CEMP was examined in 40 patients with acute vertigo of vestibular origin (26 with acute peripheral vestibulopathy, five with Ménière's disease, three with benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo (BPPV), six with psychogenic vertigo) and the results compared with standard caloric reaction (CR). For CE

Impaired auditory frequency discrimination in dyslexia detected with mismatch evoked potentials.

Deficits in phonological skills appear to be at the heart of reading disability; however, the nature of this impairment is not yet known. The hypothesis that dyslexic subjects are impaired in auditory frequency discrimination was tested by using an attention-independent auditory brain potential, termed mismatch negativity (MMN) while subjects performed a visual distractor task. In separate blocks, MMN responses to graded changes in tone frequency or tone duration were recorded in 10 dyslexic and matched control subjects. MMN potentials to changes in tone frequency but not to changes in tone du

Use of somatosensory evoked potentials for thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic resections.

BACKGROUND: Despite tremendous development in surgical and anesthetic techniques, resection of the thoracic and thoracoabdominal segments of the aorta remain associated with the risk of paralysis. Routine use of somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP) monitoring in patients undergoing surgery of the thoracic aorta has become a standard intra- and postoperative procedure at our institution since its first use in 1993. METHODS: One hundred forty nine (149) thoracic aortic operations were performed during January 1993 through January 1998 using SEP-directed serial sacrifice of paired intercostal ar

Abnormal subcortical somatosensory evoked potentials indicate high cervical myelopathy in achondroplasia.

UNLABELLED: Children with achondroplasia may have high cervical myelopathy due to stenosis of the cranio-cervical junction resulting in neurological disability and an increased rate of sudden death. To detect myelopathy we recorded somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) after median nerve stimulation in 30 patients with achondroplasia aged 13 months to 18 years (mean 6 years). In addition to the conventional technique of recording the cortical N20 and the central conduction time (CCT), we employed a noncephalic reference electrode recording the subcortical waveforms N13b and P13. generated nea…

[Visual evoked potentials as an indicator of supratentorial and infratentorial herniation].

The VEP was investigated in 172 patients with infratentorial and in 100 patients with supratentorial space occupying lesions. In each group 65% of the patients showed marked or even extensive changes in VEP. An immediate relation of the lesion to the optochiasmatic system or a hydrocephalus was noted in a few cases only. In contrast the VEP of patients with a clear transtentorial herniation showed severely pathological changes, occasionally up to complete loss of the potential. The VEP changes were reversible on removal of the space occupying lesions in all patients. The constellation of VEP c

Multimodality visual evoked potentials in evaluating visual dysfunction in optic neuritis.

Visual information is processed via multiple, parallel channels. The present study examined the clinical feasibility of multimodality visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in optic neuritis. We recorded transient VEPs to 30' checkerboard patterns, chromatic and achromatic sinusoidal gratings and apparent motion, and steady-state VEPs to achromatic gratings in 15 normal controls and 14 patients. VEPs to 30' checks were abnormal in 10 eyes (7 patients); however, considering all five modalities, abnormal responses were seen in 20 eyes (12 patients). Abnormality rates were not equal among the visual sti…

Multimodality evoked potentials as a prognostic tool in term asphyxiated newborns.

Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) events may cause permanent brain damage, and it is difficult to predict the long-term neurological outcome of survivors. Multimodality evoked potentials (MEPs), using flash visual (fVEPs), somatosensory (SEPs), and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) may assess the cerebral function in term neonates. MEPs were recorded in 40 hypoxic-ischemic term or near-term neonates during the first week of life in order to predict the neurological outcome. A 3 point grading system registered either mild, moderate, or severe abnormalities. At 24 months of corrected age, the in…

Visual evoked potentials and serum magnesium levels in juvenile migraine patients.

Changes in visual evoked potentials and decreased intracellular magnesium levels have been separately described in patients affected by migraine both during the attacks and in the interictal periods. An inverse correlation between increased P100 amplitude and lowered serum magnesium levels was found in children suffering from migraine with and without aura in a headache-free period. A 20-day treatment with oral magnesium pidolate seemed to normalize the magnesium balance in 90% of patients. After treatment, the reduced P100 amplitude confirmed the inverse correlation with the serum magnesium l…

The effect of low-dose interferon treatment on visual evoked potentials.

Patients suffering from chronic viral hepatitis, treated with interferon alpha-2b in a dose of 3 million units trice weekly subcutaneously, were studied. The influence of interferon on the optic nerve was evaluated by measuring the P100 implicit time of the visual evoked potentials. The results before the treatment were compared with those after 6 and 12 months of therapy, as well as with those of normal subjects. There were statistically significant differences between the groups. Furthermore, in 10 of 56 eyes (17.8%) after 6 months of treatment, and 8 of 22 eyes (36.3%) after 12 months of tr…

Diagnostic value of multimodal evoked potentials in HIV-1 infected children.

Evoked potentials (EP) help guide the diagnosis of central nervous system involvement in demyelinating pathologies regarding both children and adults, and in human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) correlated pathologies only in regard to adult patients. EP have been shown to be useful in highlighting early signs of the disease. We therefore studied EP in HIV-1 infected children with the aim of verifying the association of results with disease progression, clinical signs and electroencephalogram, and individualizing the most reliable test. Thirty-six patients (20 male and 16 female subjects, ag…
