Fragmented mitochondrial (mt) genomes have been reported in 11 species of sucking lice (suborder Anoplura) that infest humans, chimpanzees, pigs, horses, and rodents. There is substantial variation among these lice in mt karyotype: the number of minichromosomes of a species ranges from 9 to 20; the number of genes in a minichromosome ranges from 1 to 8; gene arrangement in a minichromosome differs between species, even in the same genus. We sequenced the mt genome of the guanaco louse, Microthoracius praelongiceps, to help establish the ancestral mt karyotype for sucking lice and understand ho

One of the most striking patterns of genome structure is the tight, typically negative, association between transposable elements (TEs) and meiotic recombination rates. While this is a highly recurring feature of eukaryotic genomes, the mechanisms driving correlations between TEs and recombination remain poorly understood, and distinguishing cause versus effect is challenging. Here, we review the evidence for a relation between TEs and recombination, and discuss the underlying evolutionary forces. Evidence to date suggests that overall TE densities correlate negatively with recombination, but

Production of branched α-glucan, glycogen-like polymers is widely spread in the Bacteria domain. The glycogen pathway of synthesis and degradation has been fairly well characterized in the model enterobacterial species Escherichia coli (order Enterobacteriales, class Gammaproteobacteria), in which the cognate genes (branching enzyme glgB, debranching enzyme glgX, ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase glgC, glycogen synthase glgA, and glycogen phosphorylase glgP) are clustered in a glgBXCAP operon arrangement. However, the evolutionary origin of this particular arrangement and of its constituent genes

The course of the medial ridge in the lizard jugal shows considerable morphological variation. There are four basic configurations: (1) the medial ridge is located ventral to mid-height on the suborbital process and anterior to mid-length on the postorbital process; (2) the medial ridge is located ventrally on the suborbital process (as above), but posteriorly on the postorbital process; (3) the medial ridge is located dorsally on the suborbital process and anteriorly on the postorbital process; and (4) the medial ridge is centrally located along the entire length of the jugal. Ancestral chara

Although viviparity has evolved many times in the animal kingdom, it remains relatively uncommon-scorpions and therian mammals being rare examples of entirely viviparous major taxa. Viviparity is a specialised form of intra-species parasitism which biases parental investment towards fertilised eggs, temporally spreads that investment, and also temporarily protects offspring from many selection pressures. Importantly, the mammalian viviparity appeared at a relatively late stage in the process of vertebrate evolution. Because of this, viviparity was 'superimposed' on complex pre-existing cardiov

Naturally occurring β-lactam compounds fall into four basic structural groups, the penicillins/cephalosporins, the clavams, the carbapenems and the monocyclic β-lactams. Biosynthetic studies have clarified the steps involved in the formation of the β-lactam ring for the first three of these groups, but the corresponding process or processes for the monocyclic β-lactams remains obscure. Isopenicillin N synthase is responsible for formation of the β-lactam ring in all penicillin/cephalosporin compounds, and the reaction catalyzed is completely separate from that of β-lactam synthetase, the enzym

Double-stranded (ds) DNA viruses are often described as evolving through long-term codivergent associations with their hosts, a pattern that is expected to be associated with low rates of nucleotide substitution. However, the hypothesis of codivergence between dsDNA viruses and their hosts has rarely been rigorously tested, even though the vast majority of nucleotide substitution rate estimates for dsDNA viruses are based upon this assumption. It is therefore important to estimate the evolutionary rates of dsDNA viruses independent of the assumption of host-virus codivergence. Here, we explore

The use of insertional mutagenesis to discover genes that impact laccase activity has resulted in the identification of multiple cellular processes that affect the fitness of Cryptococcus neoformans. Fitness has been defined as the ability of an organism to propagate and evolve within a given environment. Because the human host is an evolutionary dead-end for an opportunistic pathogen, we have defined pathogenic fitness here as the capability to successfully propagate within the stressful environment of the host, causing disease by expression of virulence traits that damage the host. In this r

Systemic infections by Salmonella enterica, such as typhoid fever, are a significant threat to human health. Recent studies indicate that the function of a type III secretion system encoded by Salmonella Pathogenicity Island 2 (SPI2) is central for the ability of S. enterica to cause systemic infections and for intracellular pathogenesis. This review summarizes approaches leading to the identification of SPI2, the molecular genetics and evolution of SPI2, and the current understanding of the regulation of gene expression. Recent studies have indicated that SPI2 is used by intracellular Salmone

Vertebrates appear about 500 million years ago in the fossil record. This is only 25-50 million years after the great explosion of multicellular invertebrate body plans in the early Cambrian. On a geological time scale, this interval is a 'blink of an eye', suggesting that the evolution of regulatory genes is likely to be important in the origins of vertebrates. Here we present evidence for a role of steroid receptors in this process based on a phylogenetic analysis suggesting that receptors for androgens, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and progesterone evolved from an ancestral steroid

AIMS: Contralateral axillary lymph node metastasis (CAM) is a rare clinical condition in patients with breast cancer (BC). CAM can be either a locoregional event or a distant metastasis. Molecular application for clonal evolution in BC has not been reported in CAM cases.
METHODS: We studied six patients with CAM with clinical, pathological and/or molecular evidence of distant metastasis; those patients had poor outcomes.
RESULTS: Two cases with molecular analysis of paired primary and CAM established clonal evolution of the CAM with its corresponding primary with additional molecular alterat

Reptiles are the most morphologically and physiologically diverse tetrapods, and have undergone 300 million years of adaptive evolution. Within the reptilian tetrapods, geckos possess several interesting features, including the ability to regenerate autotomized tails and to climb on smooth surfaces. Here we sequence the genome of Gekko japonicus (Schlegel's Japanese Gecko) and investigate genetic elements related to its physiology. We obtain a draft G. japonicus genome sequence of 2.55 Gb and annotated 22,487 genes. Comparative genomic analysis reveals specific gene family expansions or reduct

The origin and the evolution of Schistosomatidae species, due to their medical importance (responsible of the second most important human parasitosis after malaria), arouse a great interest. A combination of phylogenetic studies using several molecular markers has provided support for the traditional grouping and evolutionary inferences derived from morphological and biological data. The genus Schistosoma, which comprises all species parasitizing Man, is generally split into four evolutionary lineages (mansoni, haematobium, indicum and japonicum lineages). The group of African schistosomes (in

Photosystem I (PSI) converts light into chemical energy with near-unity quantum efficiency, yet its energy-transfer and charge-separation mechanisms remain debated. Evolution has diversified PSI architectures: Cyanobacterial PSI trimers confine red-shifted pigments to the core, whereas plant PSI-Light Harvesting Complex Isupercomplexes incorporate extensive peripheral red and charge-transfer states that reshape trapping. The unicellular red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae exemplifies functional diversification across distinct evolutionary branches, combining a photosystem II and plant-like monome

The p75NTR receptor, a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily, can participate in signaling pathways either by forming heteromeric complexes with other receptors, such as the Trk family (tropomyosin receptor kinases), or by functioning independently. p75NTR was investigated prevalently in the brain and retina of mammals, whereas almost nothing is known about its conservation among species. Here, we reconstructed the phylogenetic arb of p75NTR and described for the first time the p75NTR expression in the brain of the basal vertebrate Chondrichthyan Scyliorhinus canicula

Snake genomes attract significant attention from multiple disciplines, including medicine, drug bioprospection, and evolutionary biology. However, genomic research within the Viperidae family has mostly focused on the subfamily Crotalinae, while the true vipers (Viperinae) have largely been overlooked. European vipers (Vipera) have been the subject of extensive research due to their phylogeographic and ecological diversification, as well as their venoms. Nevertheless, phylogeography and systematics in this genus have primarily relied on biased information from mitochondrial genes, which fail t

Antiviral therapy is constantly challenged by the emergence of resistant pathogens. At the same time, experimental approaches to understand and predict resistance are limited by long periods required for evolutionary processes. Here, we present a herpes simplex virus 1 mutant with impaired proofreading capacity and consequently elevated mutation rates. Comparing this hypermutator to parental wild type virus, we study the evolution of antiviral drug resistance in vitro. We model resistance development and elucidate underlying genetic changes against three antiviral substances. Our analyzes reve
