[Post-traumatic endophthalmitis].

Post-traumatic endophthalmitis is a rare but serious complication of open globe injury, representing a major turning point for the patient's visual prognosis. Risk factors for this complication are lens capsule rupture, an intraocular foreign body, type of eye trauma and especially a delay in initial management of the trauma. Although Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most common organism, as in postoperative acute endophthalmitis, other microorganisms are more frequently represented and the multi-microbial involvement is common. The diagnosis can be difficult in the presence of inflammatory s

Ocular findings in patients with lyme disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease ophthalmic manifestations are underestimated due to a wide variety of clinical presentations and a lack of robust evidence. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze the prevalence of ocular findings in patients diagnosed with Lyme Disease. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases for studies enrolling patients diagnosed with Lyme disease who exhibited ocular manifestations until Apr

Does the novel coronavirus use the ocular surface as an entrance into the body or as an infection site?

This study attempts to review whether the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is transmitted through the ocular surface and examine the symptoms and signs of ocular disease. Considering that COVID-19 is transmitted by airborne droplets and close contact with infected individuals, we will also review the conditions to which eye clinics and ophthalmologists should pay attention to prevent the transmission of the disease. Although some researchers have argued that COVID-19 transmission cannot occur through the ocular surface, most of them are of the opinion that the ocular surface is a potential

Non-infectious and non-hereditary diseases of the corneal epithelium.

The corneal epithelium serves as a physical barrier and a refractive element. Therefore, diseases of the corneal epithelium can increase the risk for infection and causes vision loss. The corneal epithelium can be affected by a multitude of conditions, such as infections, hereditary diseases, depositions, trauma, autoimmune conditions, factitious disorders, and iatrogenic causes. Non-infectious and non-hereditary corneal epithelial diseases represent a collection of conditions with diverse etiologies and clinical presentations but similar patient symptoms. The differing therapeutic interventio

Inflammation and its effect on the vitreous.

The role of the vitreous in inflammatory diseases of the eye is now more clearly defined because of improved methods of examination and surgery. Inflammatory diseases of various aetiology produce opacification, liquefaction, and shrinkage. Additional changes include cellular proliferation and transformation leading to fibrosis in cases of prolonged inflammation. In some eyes the fibrosis is primarily cortical while in others it is extensive. Those inflammations with outpouring of a fluid exudate lead to detachment of the vitreous from the posterior eye and extensive shrinkage. In such eyes the

[Prevention of blindness as sequelae of corneal pathology].

Interregional WHO meeting on prevention of corneal blindness was held in Tunis in November 14-17. The participants came to a conclusion that corneal blindness ranks second after cataract in the majority of countries of the world. It is more incident in developing countries and is the leading cause of blindness in children. The principal etiologic factors of corneal blindness are analyzed: trachoma, mycotic, parasitic, traumatic, conjunctivitis of the newborns. Recommendations on prevention of corneal blindness were developed, as were suggestions on approaches to primary and secondary preventio

Management of Bilateral Central Toxic Keratopathy and Coinfection With Atypical Mycobacteria in One Eye After Simultaneous Bilateral Photorefractive Keratectomy.

We report on the management of a patient with bilateral central toxic keratopathy (CTK) and infective keratitis in one eye after bilateral photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). A 27-year-old woman presented with bilateral central corneal opacification, thinning and reduced vision within a week of PRK. The uncorrected distance visual acuity was 20/100 in the right eye and 20/60 in the left eye. The central pachymetry was 296 μm in the right eye and 262 μm in the left eye. Clinical diagnosis of CTK was made. Initial treatment included oral doxycycline and vitamin C. Subsequent evaluation at 3 weeks

One year in an eye casualty clinic.

A survey of patients visiting the eye casualty clinic of the Leicester Royal Infirmary was conducted during a one-year period. Demographic and clinical data were collected for 6576 patients. Data were recorded by both medical and clerical personnel during each patient visit. In addition to reporting the main demographic variables in the study, the most common diagnoses and occupations were analysed separately. The main diagnoses fell into two groups: trauma and acute infection/inflammation. The frequency of eye trauma in males was twice that in females. Trauma in adults was strongly influenced

Atypical cytomegalovirus retinal disease in pyroptosis-deficient mice with murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Pyroptosis is a caspase-dependent programmed cell death pathway that initiates and sustains inflammation through release of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18 following formation of gasdermin D (GSDMD)-mediated membrane pores. To determine the possible pathogenic contributions of pyroptosis toward development of full-thickness retinal necrosis during AIDS-related human cytomegalovirus retinitis, we performed a series of studies using an established model of experimental murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) retinitis in mice with retrovirus-induced immunosuppression (MAIDS). Init
