Epidemiological trends of facial fractures in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Sustaining facial fractures may pose significant challenges to patients' health and quality of life. In the United States (U.S.), facial fractures account for 20 % of all sports-related injuries in pediatrics and many of these injuries are associated with traumatic brain injury. The objective of this study was to identify overall and sports-related incidence rates of facial fractures presenting to U.S. hospital emergency departments from 2014 to 2023 and define demographic risk factors for these injuries. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried to i

Great potentiality of neonatal facial motor neurons for neural plasticity as determined by functionally essential neuronal population.

The present study was undertaken to determine the neuronal population essential for normal and minimal facial function of young adult rats that had received various degrees of crush injuries to the facial nerve in the neonatal period. Using a neuronal tracer, it was found in young adult rats receiving neonatal injuries that the minimum number of tracer-labeled facial motor neurons necessary for normal facial function corresponded to 13-14% of the neurons (2540+/-64) of the age-matched control animals, whereas the minimum number of neurons necessary for minimal facial function corresponded to 5

Craniofacial Injury Patterns and Predictors for Pediatric Non-Accidental Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Non-accidental pediatric craniofacial trauma (NAT) requires prompt recognition and treatment to ensure optimal patient outcomes and prevent recurrence. However, there are limited comprehensive analyses contrasting pediatric non-accidental to accidental trauma (AT). This study aimed to identify distinct injury patterns, demographic factors, and outcomes that characterize NAT in the pediatric facial trauma population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the National Trauma Data Bank from 2017 to 2019, identifying pediatric patients (0-18 years) with facial injuries. NA…

Facial trauma.

Facial trauma. Patients with facial trauma must be assessed in a systematic way so as to avoid missing any injury. Severe and disfiguring facial injuries can be distracting. However, clinicians must first focus on the basics of trauma care, following the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) system of care. Maxillofacial trauma occurs in a significant number of severely injured patients. Life- and sight-threatening injuries must be excluded during the primary and secondary surveys. Special attention must be paid to sight-threatening injuries in stabilized patients through early referral to an ap…

Nerve injury associated with orthognathic surgery. Part 1: UK practice and motor nerve injuries.

The head and neck is anatomically complex, and several nerves are at risk during orthognathic operations. Some injuries to nerves are reported more commonly than others. To find out what consultant surgeons tell their patients about the prevalence of common nerve injuries before orthognathic operations, we did a postal survey of fellows of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS). We also reviewed published papers to find out the reported incidence of injuries to cranial motor nerves during orthognathic operations. Only injuries to the facial nerve were commonly repor

Closed head injury.

Closed head injuries vary from the very minor to the catastrophic. It is often difficult to differentiate the severity at initial presentation. Serial assessment is very valuable. Awareness of facial injuries is aided by familiarity with facial bone anatomy and the clinical presentation of orbital, zygomatic, maxillary, and mandibular fracture. Functional injury such as concussion may coexist with other injuries. This article will discuss closed head trauma and outline specific injuries to the face, brain, skull, and its surroundings.
