Electroacupuncture at Fengchi(GB20) and Yanglingquan(GB34) Ameliorates Paralgesia through Microglia-Mediated Neuroinflammation in a Rat Model of Migraine.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have suggested that paralgesia (hyperalgesia and cutaneous allodynia) in migraine reflects the activation and sensitisation of the trigeminovascular system (TGVS). In particular, it reflects the second-order and higher nerve centre sensitisation, which is caused and maintained by neuroinflammation. Microglia activation leads to the release of proinflammatory cytokines involved in inflammatory responses. Accumulating evidence indicates that electroacupuncture (EA) is effective in ameliorating paralgesia, but the underlying mechanisms of EA in migraine attacks caused

Functional organization of trigeminal subnucleus interpolaris: nociceptive and innocuous afferent inputs, projections to thalamus, cerebellum, and spinal cord, and descending modulation from periaqueductal gray.

In view of continuing uncertainties concerning the organization, afferent inputs, and projection sites of neurons in the subnucleus interpolaris of the trigeminal (V) spinal tract nucleus, the characteristics of 222 single neurons in and adjacent to the subnucleus were examined electrophysiologically in adult cats anesthetized with chloralose. Neurons were tested for orthodromic responsiveness to a variety of stimuli that included nonnoxious tactile stimuli, noxious mechanical and radiant-heat stimuli, and graded electrical stimulation of the skin, mucosa, tooth pulp, and masseter nerve. NON-PARALYTIC POLIOMYELITIS IN THE CHIMPANZEE.

1. Thirteen cases of non-paralytic poliomyelitis infection in chimpanzees are described. Nine of these animals were excreting virus in. thei … The second attack consisted of a facial paralysis, with arrest of the pathological process near the facial nucleus. 4. Although cerebral lesions were light in some of the non-paralytic and inapparent infections, their presence in all indicates the action of virus on the central nervous system with the possibihty of production of at least partial local resistance …

Response of facial and rubrospinal neurons to axotomy: changes in mRNA expression for cytoskeletal proteins and GAP-43.

Neurons confined within the mammalian CNS usually do not regenerate after axonal injury, while axonal regeneration is the rule in the PNS. It has been hypothesized that this may be related to differences in the microenvironment of the PNS versus CNS and to differences in the neuronal response to injury. In order to test the latter hypothesis, we compared changes in gene expression after axotomy in two populations of neurons: rat facial motoneurons and rat rubrospinal neurons. In situ hybridization with cDNA probes for the medium and light neurofilament protein revealed a reduced mRNA content i

Pathologic characteristics of human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-related extranodal orofacial lymphomas.

Eleven cases of extranodal orofacial lymphomas (EOFL), consisting of four HTLV-related and seven HTLV-unrelated EOFL, were investigated with respect to the immunohistochemical and clinical features. HTLV-related EOFL were of T-cell phenotype and were associated with a poorer prognosis than HTLV-unrelated EOFL, most of which were of B-cell origin. The appearance of giant cells with cerebriform nuclei was helpful in identifying HTLV-related EOFL. The relatively high incidence of T-cell type EOFL in our series was considered to be related to the high percentage of HTLV carriers in our district, a

Striatal dopaminergic patterns and clinical features in frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia is a group of neurodegenerative disorders mainly characterized by behavioural and language impairments. While the precise pathophysiology remains elusive, emerging evidence points to an important role of dopamine dysfunction, particularly within the caudate nucleus. Moreover, a theoretical model proposes that frontotemporal dementia manifestations result from a deficit in goal-directed behaviour, which may be related to altered dopamine control of the frontostriatal circuitry. However, no study has investigated the gradient of striatal dopamine transporter levels in fro

Distinctive response of CNS glial cells in oro-facial pain associated with injury, infection and inflammation.

Oro-facial pain following injury and infection is frequently observed in dental clinics. While neuropathic pain evoked by injury associated with nerve lesion has an involvement of glia/immune cells, inflammatory hyperalgesia has an exaggerated sensitization mediated by local and circulating immune mediators. To better understand the contribution of central nervous system (CNS) glial cells in these different pathological conditions, in this study we sought to characterize functional phenotypes of glial cells in response to trigeminal nerve injury (loose ligation of the mental branch), infection

Emotion-tremor coupling in Wilson's disease: EEG microstate C as a marker of salience network dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Emotional states are known to modulate tremor severity in Wilson's disease (WD), but the neural mechanisms underlying this emotion-tremor coupling remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the neurophysiological and structural substrates of emotion-induced tremor variability in WD patients using electroencephalography (EEG) microstate analysis, kinematic tremor tracking, and structural MRI. METHODS: Forty-five tremor-dominant WD patients and 20 healthy controls underwent assessments with the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (BIDQ), Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor Rati

Contribution of peripheral and central delta opioid receptors in the relief of migraine-like headache in female and male rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Preclinical studies in mice highlight delta opioid receptors (DOPs) as a potential migraine treatment. Here, we examined their role in a rat model of migraine in both sexes. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We assessed DOP distribution in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) using RNAscope, the action of the DOP agonist SNC80 on facial mechanical sensitivity using von Frey hairs and responses of trigeminal nucleus caudalis wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons using in vivo electrophysiology, in physiological conditions and a migraine model induced by isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) injections.

New complex cell junctions in and around the intervertebral discs discovered using autoantibodies from patients affected by endemic pemphigus foliaceus in El Bagre, Colombia, South America.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, the intervertebral disks' (IVD) nucleus pulposus (NP) and annulus fibrosus (AF) are considered to have few cellular components and cell junctions. Patients affected by a new variant of endemic pemphigus foliaceus in El Bagre, Colombia, experience back pain in the spinal areas of the lower and upper back. Here, we investigate the reactivity of the patient's autoantibodies to structures in and around the IVDs at the cellular level. METHODS: We first administered a questionnaire and performed a medical examination. We then tested for autoreactivity against IVDs by indi

Social supports moderate the effects of child adversity on neural correlates of threat processing.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and other forms of adversity are associated with alterations in threat processing and emotion regulation brain circuits. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the current investigation is to determine if the availability of positive social support can ameliorate the negative impact of adversity on these brain systems. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Subjects included 55 children ages 7-16 (X = 11.8, SD = 2.0). Approximately one-third of the cohort had no significant history of adversity, one-third had a history of moderate adversity, and one-third had a history of severe adversity. Brain

Association of Intranasal and Neurogenic Dural Inflammation in Experimental Acute Rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Nasal cavity and sinus disorders, such as allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, or certain anatomical defects, are often associated with transient or ongoing headaches. On the other hand, migraine headache patients often exhibit pain referral over the area of nasal sinuses and typical nasal autonomic symptoms involving congestion and rhinorrhea. Mechanism for convergence of nasal or sinus disorders and headaches is unknown. Herein, we examined the association of sino-nasal inflammatory pain with common preclinical indicators of trigeminovascular system activation such as dural neuroge

A significant correlation between delayed cure after microvascular decompression and positive response to preoperative anticonvulsant therapy in patients with hemifacial spasm.

Although microvascular decompression (MVD) is a reliable treatment for hemifacial spasm (HFS), the postoperative course is varied. We retros … operative anticonvulsant therapy was found in our study, which suggests that hyperexcitation of the facial nucleus plays an important role in pathogenesis of delayed cure. Therefore, if a patient demonstrating a positive response to preoperative anticonvulsant therapy showed a persistent spasm after MVD, reoperation should be delayed for at least 3 months after …

Tissue distribution of neurturin, persephin and artemin in the human brainstem at fetal, neonatal and adult age.

The occurrence of the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family ligands neurturin (NTN), persephin (PSP), and artemin (ART) was examined by immunohistochemistry in the normal human brainstem at pre-, perinatal and adult age. Immunolabelled neurons were unevenly distributed and each trophin had a consistent distribution pattern. As a rule, the NTN antiserum produced the most abundant and diffuse tissue labelling, whereas the lowest density of positive elements was observed after ART immunostaining. Labelling for NTN, PSP, and ART occurred at all examined ages. For each trophin,

Brain dysmorphology in individuals with severe prenatal alcohol exposure.

Our previous studies revealed abnormalities on structural MRI (sMRI) in small groups of children exposed to alcohol prenatally. Microcephaly, disproportionately reduced basal ganglia volume, and abnormalities of the cerebellar vermis and corpus callosum were demonstrated. The present study used sMRI to examine in detail the regional pattern of brain hypoplasia resulting from prenatal exposure to alcohol using a higher resolution imaging protocol and larger sample sizes than reported previously. Fourteen participants (mean 11.4 years; eight females, six males) with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)

[A case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) started with monoparesis of the left arm].

A 72-year-old man developed a sudden weakness in his left hand on October 5, 1991. He was admitted two weeks thereafter. Physical examination revealed minimal weakness, and clumsiness of the fingers on his left hand. Exaggerated tendon reflexes and spasticity were also noted only on his left upper limb. He had neither dementia nor psychiatric symptoms. Subsequently he developed weakness in his left leg on November 17. Within 12 days he developed left facial weakness, and myoclonic movements on the left side. By December 2, he developed spastic tetraparesis with bilateral facial palsy, and gene
