Multi-Stage Fitness Test Performance, V ˙ O2 Peak and Adiposity: Effect on Risk Factors for Cardio-Metabolic Disease in Adolescents.

The role of physical activity in determining the metabolic health of adolescents is poorly understood, particularly concerning the effect on low-grade chronic inflammation (chronic elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and acute phase protein CRP, which is implicated in the etiology of atherosclerosis) and anti-inflammatory mediators such as IL-10. Furthermore, there is limited information on the mediating effects of performance on the multi-stage fitness test (MSFT), V ˙ O2 peak and adiposity on risk factors for cardio-metabolic disease in adolescents. Purpose: To examin

Evaluation of maternal serum folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine levels andfactor V Leiden, factor II g.20210G>A, and MTHFR variations in prenatallydiagnosed neural tube defects.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are common congenital malformations that develop as a result of interactions between several genes and environmental factors. Many factors have been investigated in order to understand the etiology of NTDs, and many studies have identified folate intake as a common contributing factor. The exact etiology of the disease is still unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we compared serum folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine levels, along with common thrombophilia-related genetic variations, including factor V Leiden, factor II g.20210G>A, MTHFR …

The pro-coagulant fibrinogenolytic serine protease isoenzymes purified from Daboia russelii russelii venom coagulate the blood through factor V activation: role of glycosylation on enzymatic activity.

Proteases from Russell's viper venom (RVV) induce a variety of toxic effects in victim. Therefore, four new RVV protease isoenzymes of molecular mass 32901.044 Da, 333631.179 Da, 333571.472 Da, and 34594.776 Da, were characterized in this study. The first 10 N-terminal residues of these serine protease isoenzymes showed significant sequence homology with N-terminal sequences of snake venom thrombin-like and factor V-activating serine proteases, which was reconfirmed by peptide mass fingerprinting analysis. These proteases were found to be different from previously reported factor V activators …

The V(D)J recombination/DNA repair factor artemis belongs to the metallo-beta-lactamase family and constitutes a critical developmental checkpoint of the lymphoid system.

V(D)J recombination constitutes a critical checkpoint in the development of the immune system as shown in several animal models as well as severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) condition in humans. We recently cloned the Artemis gene, whose mutations are responsible for RS-SCID, a condition characterized by an absence of both B and T lymphocytes and associated with increased sensitivity to ionizing radiations. Artemis is ubiquitously expressed and is localized in the nucleus. Artemis belongs to the metallo-beta-lactamase superfamily and defines a new group, beta-CASP, within this family. be

Mechanical Valved Conduit Replacement of Aortic Valve and Aortic Root (Bentall Procedure) with Excision of Left Ventricular Mass in the Setting of Factor V Leiden Heterozygosity.

Cardiac tumors are rare and often diagnostically challenging to identify and treat. The diagnosis of cardiac tumors (primary or secondary) is largely based on a constellation of findings, including patient history, symptomatology, clinical index of suspicion, early diagnostic testing, and thorough examination. Here, we present a case of a 46-year-old patient who underwent a mechanical valved conduit replacement of the aortic valve and dilated aortic root (Bentall procedure), as well as the excision of a recently diagnosed 1.1 cm left ventricular mass. The utilization of intraoperative TEE by c

Recurrent arterial and venous thrombosis in a 39-year-old male with Factor V Leiden syndrome and aneurysmal disease: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Factor V Leiden is classically linked to venous thrombosis, however arterial events in carriers are uncommon and usually context dependent. We describe a 39-year-old man with known Factor V Leiden who presented with central chest pain and an inferior ST elevation myocardial infarction. Angiography showed an ectatic right coronary artery with total proximal in stent occlusion and thrombus in the posterior descending artery, and he underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibition and heparin. He re-presented with in stent thrombosis requiring repeat …

Factor V Leiden-independent activated protein C resistance: Communication from the plasma coagulation inhibitors subcommittee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Scientific and Standardisation Committee.

Activated protein C resistance (APC-R) due to the single-nucleotide polymorphism factor V Leiden (FVL) is the most common cause of hereditary thrombophilia. It is found predominantly in Caucasians and is uncommon or absent in other populations. Although FVL is responsible for >90% of cases of hereditary APC-R, a number of other F5 variants that also confer various degrees of APC-R and thrombotic risk have been described. Acquired APC-R due to increased levels of coagulation factors, reduced levels of inhibitors, or the presence of autoantibodies occurs in a variety of conditions and is an inde…

Factor V Leiden mutation, prothrombin gene mutation, and deficiencies in coagulation inhibitors associated with Budd-Chiari syndrome and portal vein thrombosis: results of a case-control study.

In a collaborative multicenter case-control study, we investigated the effect of factor V Leiden mutation, prothrombin gene mutation, and inherited deficiencies of protein C, protein S, and antithrombin on the risk of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) and portal vein thrombosis (PVT). We compared 43 BCS patients and 92 PVT patients with 474 population-based controls. The relative risk of BCS was 11.3 (95% CI 4.8-26.5) for individuals with factor V Leiden mutation, 2.1(95% CI 0.4-9.6) for those with prothrombin gene mutation, and 6.8 (95% CI 1.9-24.4) for those with protein C deficiency. The relative …

[A new hereditary cause of portal vein thrombosis: the abnormal resistance to activated protein C by the Arg 506-->Gln mutation of the gene of factor V].

We report 2 cases of portal vein thrombosis associated with a single point mutation in the factor V gene that replaces arginine in residue 506 with glutamine. This mutation induces abnormal resistance to anticoagulant activity of activated protein C and increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Both patients had a personal and familial history of deep vein thrombosis. Intraabdominal neoplasia or infection, myeloproliferative disorder, antiphospholipid syndrome, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and coagulation inhibitor deficiency (antithrombin, proteins C and S) were excluded by exhaustiv…
