Snakebite envenomation is a life-threatening injury and a neglected public health issue in Africa. We report the case of a child that presented 6 days following a forearm snakebite with compartment syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis of the upper limb extending to the neck and chest who developed mediastinitis. She underwent multiple surgical debridements and the mediastinitis was managed non-surgically with antibiotics and postural drainage leading to recovery. The wounds were later grafted and the child discharged. Extension of necrotizing fasciitis from the limbs to the chest wall with devel…

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a complicated soft tissue infection frequently associated with severe sepsis if an early medical and surgical treatment is not performed. We report two postoperative cases of severe NF after oophorectomy and colorectal resection. Because of the similarity with more benign skin infections at the early steps, clinical suspicion is crucial. Surgical exploration and resection will provide both the diagnosis confirming necrotizing infection of the fascia with vessels and treatment. Also, empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics must be initiated as soon as possible. Regard…

Stable testicular coverage was achieved with closely matched skin and minimal donor-site morbidity. Further study and a larger sample size will be necessary to …

Necrotizing soft tissue fasciitis (NSTIs) or necrotizing fasciitis is an infrequent and serious infection. Herein, we describe the clinical course of a female patient who received a diagnosis of NSTIs after gluteus intramuscular injection. We also report the results of our review of published papers from 1997 to 2017. Since now, 19 cases of NSTIs following intramuscular injections have been described. We focus on the correlation between intramuscular injection and NSTIs onset, especially in immunosuppressed patients treated with corticosteroids, suffering from chronic diseases or drug addicted…

PURPOSE: To report a case of periocular necrotizing fasciitis with toxic shock syndrome.
METHODS: This is a case report of a previously healthy 69-year-old woman with left preseptal eyelid infection that spread rapidly and deteriorated into necrosis of the eyelid with toxic shock syndrome. She was admitted to intensive care unit for hemodynamic stabilization.
RESULTS: Intravenous antibiotic and high-dose immunoglobulin were administered followed by surgical debridement. Rehabilitative eyelid reconstruction was performed after acute episode, resulting in patient satisfaction in relation to pe…

Necrotising fasciitis is a rare, serious infection of the deep fascia leading to subcutaneous tissue necrosis. It is extremely important for this condition to be identified and treated promptly as it bears significant mortality. We describe a case of necrotising fasciitis after laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported after the specific procedure. This case report aims to encourage surgeons to have a low threshold in recognising necrotising fasciitis postoperatively, especially for patients with possible risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare condition characterized by swelling of the extremities, sclerodermatous evolution and frequent hypereosinophilia. Hematological disorders, including aplastic anemia, solid tumors and autoimmune diseases, may be associated with EF. EF is usually not associated with granulomatous diseases.
CASE REPORT: Herein we describe the case of an 80-year-old man with symmetrical swelling and sclerosis of the legs, typical of EF, associated with skin and lymph node granulomas. Oral prednisone treatment resulted in complete clinical remission.
DISCUSSION: A…

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening soft tissue infection characterized by a rapid spreading infection of the subcutaneous tissue and in particular the fascia. The management of infected tissues requires a rapid diagnosis, immediate aggressive surgical management and an extended debridement. In some cases early amputations of the affected tissues and maximum intensive care treatment, in case of sepsis, are required. Due to a rising number of cases we aimed to evaluate our patients in a retrospective review.
METHOD: All patients diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis from 201…

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare and rapidly progressing life-threatening infectious process. By progressing through a simulation involving a patient with NF and participating in a post-scenario debriefing, learners will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to properly diagnose and manage patients with NF. Learners are taught to initiate appropriate and timely treatment and to advocate on behalf of their patient after inappropriate pushback from consultants to improve outcomes.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive infectious disease of the soft tissue with high mortality and morbidity rates. Necrotizing fasciitis is occasionally located in the head and neck region and develops after odontogenic infections. Factors affecting treatment success rates are early diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic treatment, and surgical debridement. We present a necrotizing fasciitis case located in the neck region that developed after sialoadenitis. It is important to emphasize that necrotizing fasciitis to be seen in the neck region is very rare. Nonodontogenic necrotizing fasc…

Necrotising fasciitis (NF) is considered a rare and possibly life-threatening infection of the subcutaneous tissue and of the fascia. A specific characteristic is the rapid progress of the disease associated with considerable local pain. Since laboratory parameters as well as imaging are only unspecific, diagnosis is set up clinically. Even in the case of a serious suspicion, an immediate and radical debridement has to be initiated, accompanied by intensive care and adequate antibiotic treatment. Only after stabilisation of the general physical condition and local - sometimes extensive - wound…

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe life-threatening infection of the deep subcutaneous tissues and fascia. Infection with Vibrio vulnificus, a halophilic Gram-negative bacillus found worldwide in warm coastal waters, can lead to severe complications, particularly among patients with chronic liver diseases. We herein present an unusual case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by V. vulnificus triggered by acupuncture needle insertion. The patient, who suffered from diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and worked at a fish hatchery, denied any injury prior to acupuncture. This is th…

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is defined as rapidly progressive necrosis of subcutaneous fat and fascia. Although NF of the face is rare, its mortality rate is nearly 30%. It usually originates from dental infection and can lead to involvement of the neck, mediastinum, and chest wall. Complications resulting from pre-existing systemic diseases can increase the mortality rate. Known complication factors for NF include diabetes, malnutrition, advanced age, peripheral vascular disease, renal failure, and obesity. Here, we report a case of NF originating from dental infection in an 88-year-old woman …

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) can appear after various penetrating or non-penetrating skin lesions. This is the first reported case in which NF occurred after a central venous line placement. Because of intubation and sedation of the critically ill patient, only local conditions can indicate NF although other decisive symptoms, such as pain out of proportion to physical findings, are not evaluable.
METHODS: Case report and review of the literature.
RESULTS: A 71-y-old male patient was admitted to the intensive care unit after spine surgery due to post-operative delirium. Because of …

Necrotizing fasciitis is a critical illness involving skin and soft tissues, which may develop after blunt abdominal trauma causing abdominal wall hernia and representing a great challenge for physicians. A 52-year-old man was brought to the emergency department after a road accident, presenting blunt abdominal trauma with a large non-reducible mass in the lower-right abdomen. A first, CT showed abdominal hernia without signs of complication. Three hours after ICU admission, he developed hemodynamic instability. Therefore, a new CT scan was requested, showing signs of hernia complication. He w…
