Iron pill-induced duodenitis: A distinct pattern of duodenal mucosal injury in a patient with a duodenal mass.

Ferrous sulfate is an oral iron supplement commonly used to treat iron deficiency anemia. Upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract mucosal damage with associated tissue iron accumulation can sometimes occur with therapeutic dosages of oral iron-containing medications. A distinct histologic pattern of iron deposition with associated inflammatory and reactive changes caused by mucosal injury from oral iron-containing medications has been most commonly described within gastric biopsies and has been referred to as "iron-pill gastritis". There have only been very rare reports of duodenal mucosa biopsies d

Novel advanced nanomaterial based on ferrous metal-organic framework and its application as chemosensors for mercury in environmental and biological samples.

In this work, promising novel ferrous metal-organic framework nanoparticles (Fe(II)-MOF-NPs) were prepared via a simple method. The produced materials were fully characterized using FE-SEM, EDX, HR-TEM, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, FT-IR, UV-Vis, TG/DSC, XRD, XPS, and analysis of magnetic properties. Colorimetric and photoluminescence (PL) investigations of Fe(II)-MOF-NPs were also carried out. The specific coordination binding between the Hg(II) and amino groups of the MOF led to an enhancement of the PL and the absorbance intensities. Therefore, Hg(II) concentrations could be deter

Controls on iron(II) fluxes into waterways impacted by acid mine drainage: A Damköhler analysis of groundwater seepage and iron kinetics.

When acidic groundwater flows into an aquatic system the sediment water interface (SWI) acts as a transition zone between the groundwater and lake water, and often exhibits strong physical and biogeochemical gradients. The fate of groundwater-borne solutes, such as Fe(II), is determined by the balance between the exposure time during transport across the SWI and the reaction time within the SWI, however the relative role of groundwater seepage rates and iron kinetics on acidity generation in lakes is unknown. Porewater seepage velocities, porewater chemical profiles, and limnological data were

Estimates of total body iron indicate 19 mg and 38 mg oral iron are equivalent for the mitigation of iron deficiency in individuals experiencing repeated phlebotomy.

Iron deficiency anemia is a common clinical condition often treated with tablets containing 65 mg of elemental iron. Such doses can elicit gastrointestinal side effects lowering patient compliance. Oral iron supplements also increase hepcidin production causing decreased fractional absorption of subsequent doses. Frequent blood donors often become iron deficient. Therefore, they were enrolled in a two-year study involving continued blood donations and randomization to receive no pill, placebo, 19, or 38 mg ferrous gluconate for 60 days. Total body iron (TBI) did not change for the subset of do

Removal of phosphorus from wastewaters using ferrous salts - a pilot scale membrane bioreactor study.

A pilot scale membrane bioreactor (3.7 m(3)/day capacity), configured for alternate point ferrous sulphate addition, was evaluated in a fourteen month trial to comply with an effluent discharge requirement of less than 0.15 mg-P/L at the 50(th) percentile and less than 0.30 mg-P/L at the 90th percentile. Ferrous sulphate was added at a molar ratio (Fe(II):PO4) of 2.99 in the filtration chamber for 85 days and 2.60 in the primary anoxic zone for 111 days. Addition of ferrous salts to the anoxic zone achieved a final effluent phosphorous concentration (mg-P/L) of <0.05 (29%), <0.15 (77%) and <0.

Reactions of acids with naphthyridine-functionalized ferrocenes: protonation and metal extrusion.

Reaction of 1,8-naphthyrid-2-yl-ferrocene (FcNP) with a variety of acids affords protonated salts at first, whereas longer reaction time leads to partial demetalation of FcNP resulting in a series of Fe complexes. The corresponding salts [FcNP·H][X] (X = BF(4) or CF(3)SO(3) (1)) are isolated for HBF(4) and CF(3)SO(3)H. Reaction of FcNP with equimolar amount of CF(3)CO(2)H for 12 h affords a neutral complex [Fe(FcNP)(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(2)(OH(2))(2)] (2). Use of excess acid gave a trinuclear Fe(II) complex [Fe(3)(H(2)O)(2)(O(2)CCF(3))(8)(FcNP·H)(2)] (3). Three linear iron atoms are held together by

Spray absorption and electrochemical reduction of nitrogen oxides from flue gas.

This work developed an electrochemical reduction system which can effectively scrub NO× from flue gas by using aqueous solution of Fe(II)(EDTA) (ethylenediaminetetraacetate) as absorbent and electrolyte. This new system features (a) complete decomposition of NOX to harmless N2; and (b) fast regeneration of Fe(II)(EDTA) through electrochemical reaction. The Fe(II)(EDTA) solution was recycled and reused continuously during entire process, and no harmful waste was generated. The reaction mechanism was thoroughly investigated by using voltammetric, chromatographic and spectroscopic approaches. The

Reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride in acidic soil manipulated with iron(II) and bisulfide ion.

Batch and column tests were conducted to investigate the effect of reductant concentration, reductant contact time, and suspension pH on reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by soil manipulated with Fe(II) and HS(-). Kinetic rate constants for the reductive dechlorination increased as the reductant concentrations increased. Fe(II) was more effective reductant than HS(-), resulting in higher rate constants. The contact time of 1 day for the soil with HS(-) and that of 4h with Fe(II) showed the highest reaction rates, respectively. The kinetic rate constants increased as the pH

Reduction and immobilization of chromium(VI) by iron(II)-treated faujasite.

Removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater typically involves reduction of Cr(VI) to insoluble Cr(III) using zerovalent iron (Fe(0)) or ferrous iron (Fe(II)). This study investigates the effectiveness of Fe(II)-treated faujasite (zeolite Fe(II)-Y) for reduction of Cr(VI) and immobilization (adsorption/co-precipitation) of the Cr(III) reaction product. The Fe(II)-faujasite material effectively removed high concentrations of dissolved Cr(VI) from aqueous solution resulting in Cr solid loadings as high as 0.30 mmol Cr per gram Fe(II)-faujasite or approximately 1.5% Cr (w:w). Dechlorination of trichloroethylene by a steel converter slag amended with Fe(II).

This study aims to assess the feasibility of using slag, byproduct from iron and steel making industries, as a new reactive material for dechlorination reactions and to investigate dechlorination chemistries of the systems containing the slag and Fe(II). Initially, screening experiments were conducted to evaluate various systems containing slags with or without Fe(II). A combination of the steel converter slag and Fe(II) showed a potential to be developed as a reactive material to treat chlorinated organics. Further kinetic studies with the steel converter slag/Fe(II) systems revealed that the

Effects of pH and dissolved oxygen on the reduction of hexavalent chromium by dissolved ferrous iron in poorly buffered aqueous systems.

The effects of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) on the reduction of Cr(VI) by dissolved Fe(II) were investigated for aqueous solutions having relatively low buffering capacities. All solutions were maintained at a constant ionic strength (generally 0.05 M) and temperature (23 +/- 2 degrees C). For the majority of the experiments conducted, initial concentrations of Fe(II) and Cr(VI) were 50 and 20 microM, respectively, representing a deficient amount of Fe(II) (i.e. nonstoichiometric conditions). Experiments conducted in the absence and presence of DO were performed in an anaerobic chamber and in

Discrimination among iron sulfide species formed in microbial cultures.

A quantitative method for the study of iron sulfides precipitated in liquid cultures of bacteria is described. This method can be used to quantify and discriminate among amorphous iron sulfide (FeS(amorph)), iron monosulfide minerals such as mackinawite or greigite (FeS(min)), and iron disulfide minerals such as pyrite or marcasite (FeS(2min)) formed in liquid cultures. Degradation of iron sulfides is performed using a modified Cr(2+) reduction method with reflux distillation. The basic steps of the method are: first, separation of FeS(amorph); second, elimination of interfering species of S s

[Special qualification of a photometric procedure for determination of salicylic acid in therapeutic drug monitoring].

A procedure for the determination of salicylic acid from human serum is presented. It is based on an acidic extraction, a basic reextraction and the detection of salicylic acid as its iron-III-complex by photometry. The procedure is quantitative over a wide range of linearity, easy to carry out and is especially suitable for therapeutic drug monitoring in the treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Metal ion-catalyzed oxidation of proteins: biochemical mechanism and biological consequences.

In the presence of O2, Fe(III) or Cu(II), and an appropriate electron donor, a number of enzymic and nonenzymic oxygen free radical-generating systems are able to catalyze the oxidative modification of proteins. Whereas random, global modification of many different amino acid residues and extensive fragmentation occurs when proteins are exposed to oxygen radicals produced by high energy radiation, only one or a few amino acid residues are modified and relatively little peptide bond cleavage occurs when proteins are exposed to metal-catalyzed oxidation (MCO) systems. The available evidence indi

Mechanisms of Hexavalent Chromium Reduction in Fe(II)-Bearing Clay Mineral and Fe (hydr)oxide Binary Systems: Competitive Adsorption versus Mediated Electron Transfer.

Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals are widespread reductants of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in subsurface environments. However, the influences of coexisting Fe (hydr)oxides on Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals remain elusive. Here, Cr(VI) reduction was investigated in premixed systems of reduced nontronite NAu-2 (rNAu-2) and various Fe (hydr)oxides. Results showed that coexisting ferrihydrite significantly facilitated Cr(VI) reduction during the quick stage (0-2.5 min) across pH 5.5-9.0. During the subsequent slow stage (2.5-205 min), ferrihydrite inhibited Cr(VI) reduction at pH 5.
