Investigating the effect of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction on stress level and brain activity of college students.

Financial constraints usually hinder students, especially those in low-middle income countries (LMICs), from seeking mental health interventions. Hence, it is necessary to identify effective, affordable and sustainable counter-stress measures for college students in the LMICs context. This study examines the sustained effects of mindfulness practice on the psychological outcomes and brain activity of students, especially when they are exposed to stressful situations. Here, we combined psychological and electrophysiological methods (EEG) to investigate the sustained effects of an 8-week-long st

Sex differences in event-related risk for major depression.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to determine if women are more likely than men to experience an episode of major depression in response to stressful life events. METHOD: Sex differences in event-related risk for depression were examined by means of secondary analyses employing data from the Americans' Changing Lives study. The occurrence and time of occurrence of depression onset and instances of stressful life events within a 12-month period preceding a structured interview were documented in a community-based sample of 1024 men and 1800 women. Survival analytical techniques were used to exami

Biomechanics of corneal ectasia and biomechanical treatments.

UNLABELLED: Many algorithms exist for the topographic/tomographic detection of corneas at risk for post-refractive surgery ectasia. It is proposed that the reason for the difficulty in finding a universal screening tool based on corneal morphologic features is that curvature, elevation, and pachymetric changes are all secondary signs of keratoconus and post-refractive surgery ectasia and that the primary abnormality is in the biomechanical properties. It is further proposed that the biomechanical modification is focal in nature, rather than a uniform generalized weakening, and that the focal r

University students are particularly vulnerable to psychological distress due to academic pressure, social transitions, and lifestyle changes. Despite increasing attention to mental health in higher education, data on perceived stress among Italian university students remain limited. Minority stressors and psychological correlates of sexual distress among Black queer and heterosexual women.

Many women experience distress related to their sexual functioning. In fact, sexual distress is often the first sign of sexual functioning disorders. Yet, little is known about Black women's experiences of sexual distress. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between psychological factors (distress, post-traumatic stress disorder, perceived stress, and financial worry), minority stressors (superwoman schema and sexual objectification), and sexual distress among Black queer and heterosexual women. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 448 Black women aged 19-67, recrui

Pension reforms, economic security, and mental health: The need for a human rights-based approach.

Pension systems play a crucial role in providing economic security and supporting well-being in later life. However, as governments implement reforms to ensure financial sustainability-such as raising the retirement age, reducing benefits, and shifting to defined-contribution schemes-these measures often overlook their psychological and social consequences. Pension insecurity has been linked to heightened stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as increased social isolation, particularly among vulnerable populations, including those in physically demanding jobs, low-income workers, and indivi

Gambling Harm Experienced by Children Exposed to Parental Gambling: An Online Survey of Australians.

Although child wellbeing is known to be negatively affected by gambling, relatively little is known about the specific harms experienced by children exposed to parental gambling problems. The current study aimed to better understand gambling harm directly attributed to regular parental gambling in key areas of child wellbeing: financial, psychological, interpersonal wellbeing and intergenerational transmission of problem gambling. Using data from a national survey of Australian adults exposed to parental gambling under the age of 18 (n = 211), the results show that parental gambling was relate

Associations of a Composite Stress Measurement Tool With Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Outcomes: Findings From the Dallas Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Most data linking chronic stress with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and outcomes have focused on single-domain stress measurements. We evaluated the association between a novel composite measure of chronic perceived stress and CVD risk factors and outcomes in a diverse population. METHODS AND RESULTS: Individual chronic stress subcomponents (generalized stress, psychosocial, financial, and neighborhood stress) were standardized and integrated to create a novel composite stress score (CSS). Patterns of Social Risk Factors and Associations With Health Outcomes: Findings From a Latent Class Analysis.

IntroductionWith growing attention to the role of social factors in shaping health, efforts have emerged to integrate social risk information into population health surveillance and healthcare delivery. However, current approaches to address social risk tend to focus on responding to each risk factor in isolation, overlooking the interconnected nature of multiple social risks that often cluster together.MethodsThis study used latent class analysis to identify profiles of co-occurring social risk using a national sample of 110,028 adults across 17 U.S. states.ResultsThree profiles emerged: Low
