The central complex of Drosophila melanogaster is involved in flight control: studies on mutants and mosaics of the gene ellipsoid body open.

Visual flight control is studied in three mutant alleles of the gene ellipsoid body open (ebo) of Drosophila melanogaster. In mutant ebo flies the central complex is disturbed to varying degrees. Defects range from a small opening in the ellipsoid body to the dissociation of the ring into two parts, a cleft in the fan-shaped body and hypoplasia in the protocerebral bridge. Other parts of the brain are not visibly affected. Flight behavior is normal with respect to the amplitude of the optomotor response and to the object response (single rotating stripe). A reduced amplitude in the small rando

Characterization of Long-range Aeromedical Transport and Its Relationship to the Development of Traumatic Extremity Compartment Syndrome: A 7-year, Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Military aeromedical transport evacuates critically injured patients are for definitive care, including patients with or at risk for developing traumatic compartment syndrome of the extremities (tCSoE). Compartment pressure changes of the extremities have not been determined to be associated with factors inherent to aeromedical transport in animal models, but the influence of aeromedical evacuation (AE) transport on the timing of tCSoE development has not been studied in humans. Using a registry-based methodology, this study sought to characterize the temporal features of lower ext

Endurance pursuit hunting among recent foragers and its relevance for hominin locomotor evolution.

Textual analysis of 425 cases of endurance pursuit hunts (EPHs) found in ethnohistoric and ethnographic sources reveals the diversity, extent, and effectiveness of the endurance pursuit tactic. Endurance pursuits involve persistently running after an encountered animal, often for hours, until it can be subdued, the tactic frequently involving bouts of walking and tracking. Building on this definition, we assess the plausibility of five hypotheses that could account for the evolution of endurance pursuit strategies in hominins: i) optimization of subsistence efficiency, ii) risk minimization, i

Antibiofilm Activity of Acidic Phospholipase Isoform Isolated from Bothrops erythromelas Snake Venom.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial resistance is a worldwide public health problem, requiring new therapeutic options. An alternative approach to this problem is the use of animal toxins isolated from snake venom, such as phospholipases A2 (PLA2), which have important antimicrobial activities. Bothropserythromelas is one of the snake species in the northeast of Brazil that attracts great medical-scientific interest. Here, we aimed to purify and characterize a PLA2 from B. erythromelas, searching for heterologous activities against bacterial biofilms. METHODS: Venom extraction and quantification were fol

UPLC‑QTOFMS‑based metabolomic analysis of the serum of hypoxic preconditioning mice.

Hypoxic preconditioning (HPC) is well‑known to exert a protective effect against hypoxic injury; however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. The present study utilized a serum metabolomics approach to detect the alterations associated with HPC. In the present study, an animal model of HPC was established by exposing adult BALB/c mice to acute repetitive hypoxia four times. The serum samples were collected by orbital blood sampling. Metabolite profiling was performed using ultra‑performance liquid chromatography‑quadrupole time‑of‑flight mass spectrometry (UPLC‑QTOFMS), in conj

The complexity and structural diversity of ant venom peptidomes is revealed by mass spectrometry profiling.

RATIONALE: Compared with other animal venoms, ant venoms remain little explored. Ants have evolved complex venoms to rapidly immobilize arthropod prey and to protect their colonies from predators and pathogens. Many ants have retained peptide-rich venoms that are similar to those of other arthropod groups. METHODS: With the goal of conducting a broad and comprehensive survey of ant venom peptide diversity, we investigated the peptide composition of venoms from 82 stinging ant species from nine subfamilies using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALD

A selective, non-peptide CRF receptor 1 antagonist prevents sodium lactate-induced acute panic-like responses.

Corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is implicated in a variety of stress-related disorders such as depression and anxiety, and blocking CRF receptors is a putative strategy for treating such disorders. Using a well-studied animal model of panic, we tested the efficacy of JNJ19567470/CRA5626, a selective, non-peptidergic CRF type 1 receptor (CRF1) antagonist (3, 10 and 40 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection), in preventing the sodium lactate (NaLac)-induced panic-like behavioural and cardiovascular responses. Adult male rats with chronic reduction of GABA levels (by inhibition of GABA synthesis wi

A proximodistal gradient in bone structure and mechanics in the wings of Seba's short-tailed bat, Carollia perspicillata.

Bats possess the remarkable ability to fly, and with this, distinctive wing bone properties. We investigated the structural, mechanical, and compositional properties of the humerus, radius, metacarpals, and proximal and middle phalanges of Carollia perspicillata, an approximately 15 g fruit-eating bat native to the Neotropics. We used microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to assess cross-sectional properties (cross-sectional area, second moment of area, circularity index), quantitative backscattered scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess mineral density in longitudinal sections, and nanoin

"Critical periods" in vestibular development or adaptation of gravity sensory systems to altered gravitational conditions?

1. A feature of sensory, neuronal and motor systems is the existence of a critical period during their development. Modification of environmental conditions during this specific period of life affects development in a long-term manner, or even irreversibly. Deprivation is the prefered approach to study the existence and duration of critical periods. For gravity sensory systems, space flights offer the only opportunity for deprivation conditions. 2. Studies in a fish (Oreochromis mossambicus) and an amphibian (Xenopus laevis) revealed a significant sensitivity of their roll-induced static vesti

Comparison of the Pharmacokinetics of Gadolinium-Based and Iron Oxide-Based Contrast Agents inside the Lymphatic Structure using Magnetic Resonance Lymphangiography.

PURPOSE: Gadolinium (Gd)-based contrast agents are primarily used for contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL). However, overcoming venous contamination issues remains challenging. This study aims to assess the MRL efficacy of the newly developed iron-based contrast agent (INV-001) that is specially designed to mitigate venous contamination issues. The study further explores the optimal dosage, including both injection volume and concentration, required to achieve successful visualization of the popliteal lymph nodes and surrounding lymphatic vessels. PROCEDURES: All animal

Impact of microgravity and lunar gravity on murine skeletal and immune systems during space travel.

Long-duration spaceflight creates a variety of stresses due to the unique environment, which can lead to compromised functioning of the skeletal and immune systems. However, the mechanisms by which organisms respond to this stress remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of three different gravitational loadings (microgravity, 1/6 g [lunar gravity], and 1 g) on the behavior, bone, thymus, and spleen of mice housed for 25-35 days in the International Space Station. The bone density reduction under microgravity was mostly recovered by 1 g but only partially recovered by

Assessment of Global Ocular Structure Following Spaceflight Using a Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) Imaging Method.

Reports show that prolonged exposure to a spaceflight environment produces morphologic and functional ophthalmic changes in astronauts during and after an International Space Station (ISS) mission. However, the underlying mechanisms of these spaceflight-induced changes are currently unknown. The purpose of the present study was to determine the impact of the spaceflight environment on ocular structures by evaluating the thickness of the mouse retina, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), the choroid and the sclera layer using micro-CT imaging. Ten-week-old C57BL/6 male mice were housed aboard

Histology and histochemistry of intervertebral discs of rats participated in spaceflight.

The qualitative and quantitative histological and histochemical changes in the structure and macromolecular composition of lumbar intervertebral discs of rat during a 12.5-day space flight (Cosmos 1887 biosatellite) were determined using light and polarization microscopy. Semiquantitative histochemical, topo-optical reactions were measured and evaluated by retardation values of birefringence. (a) Lateral expansion and accumulation of the notochordal cells in the nucleus pulposus was observed in contrast with the vivarium control, where the chondroid cells dominated. (b) The cartilage and plate

A new aspect in pathogenesis of experimental hydrops: role of calcium.

An imbalanced Ca++-homeostasis in the inner ear was demonstrated using an animal model for Menière's disease (MD). An increase of Ca++ concentration in the endolymph, as well as in some cells of the inner ear tissue, causes a rise of osmotic pressure and decrease of electric potential. Based on these results, we assume a new aspect in the pathophysiology of MD. It is proposed that the common denominator of MD, experimental endolymphatic hydrops (EEH), and space motion sickness (SMS) is primarily a shift of the inner ear Ca++ homeostasis towards a higher concentration of free Ca++ in the fluid

[Reactions of rats to behavior tasks of different degrees of difficulty after flight aboard the biosatellite "cosmos-782"].

Maze behaviour of rats was studied on 6--25th days after exposure on biosatellite "Kosmos-782". Presentation of a foreign stimulus (a bell) on the 6--7th day after return, had a weaker effect on the maze performance in experimental rats, than in the control group. The experimental animals were also better adapted, as compared to the control ones, to an increased functional stress on CNS (increased number of runs in the maze from 3 to 16 in one session), applied on 11--13th day after the return. Similarly, the ability to use previous experience in a new situation, tested an 15--20th day after t

Subgravity states: key to understanding the role of terrestrial gravity in human behaviour.

The early orbital flights, although undertaken with considerable confidence, involved some uncertainty because of the impossibility of simulating under terrestrial conditions all of the conditions encountered in space. However, space-flight achievements by both the American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts have firmly established that man, if appropriately selected, trained, and protected by suitable life-support systems, can perform efficiently for long periods of time in the hostile environment of space. We know that the side effects of vestibular origin pose important problems in space expl

BRUCELLA PINNIPEDIALIS IN GREY SEALS ( HALICHOERUS GRYPUS) AND HARBOR SEALS ( PHOCA VITULINA) IN THE NETHERLANDS.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease with terrestrial or marine wildlife animals as potential reservoirs for the disease in livestock and human populations. The primary aim of this study was to assess the presence of Brucella pinnipedialis in marine mammals living along the Dutch coast and to observe a possible correlation between the presence of B. pinnipedialis and accompanying pathology found in infected animals. The overall prevalence of Brucella spp. antibodies in sera from healthy wild grey seals ( Halichoerus grypus; n=11) and harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina; n=40), collected between 2007 an

The dynamics of stress: a longitudinal MRI study of rat brain structure and connectome.

Stress is a well-established trigger for a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, as it alters both structure and function of several brain regions and its networks. Herein, we conduct a longitudinal neuroimaging study to assess how a chronic unpredictable stress protocol impacts the structure of the rat brain and its functional connectome in both high and low responders to stress. Our results reveal the changes that stress triggers in the brain, with structural atrophy affecting key regions such as the prelimbic, cingulate, insular and retrosplenial, somatosensory, motor, auditory and perirhin

A Metabolomic Approach to the Pathogenesis of Ventilator-induced Lung Injury.

BACKGROUND: Global metabolic profiling using quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and mass spectrometry (MS) is useful for biomarker discovery. The objective of this study was to discover biomarkers of acute lung injury induced by mechanical ventilation (ventilator-induced lung injury [VILI]), by using MRS and MS. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to two ventilatory strategies for 2.5 h: tidal volume 9 ml/kg, positive end-expiratory pressure 5 cm H2O (control, n = 14); and tidal volume 25 ml/kg and positive end-expiratory pressure 0 cm H2O (VILI, n = 10).
