A physical climate storyline for the Hercules storm in Portugal: Extreme coastal flooding in southwestern Europe under a changing climate.

In the first days of 2014, exceptionally energetic swells associated to the Hercules storm (also known as "Christina") produced one of the most devastating coastal events in Portugal, establishing new records in long-term wave observations for the area. Between January 6th and 7th, extreme coastal flooding affected >30 municipalities along the Portuguese coastlines, with buoys measuring maximum individual wave heights and periods of 14.91 m and 28.10 s, respectively. The storm caused >16 million euros in direct costs, due to overtopping and coastal flooding, and hundreds of millions in indirec

Nature-based Solutions as Building Blocks for coastal flood risk reduction: a model-based ecosystem service assessment.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognized as effective measures for mitigating flood risks and enhancing climate change adaptation. However, evaluating their efficacy in delivering flood risk reduction ecosystem service (FRR-ESS) is usually limited by reliance on qualitative, expert-based "quick-scan" scoring methods. While already challenging for present-day evaluations, this limitation becomes even more significant when addressing future climate scenarios, introducing deep uncertainties in the evaluation. The present study introduces a model-based framework to quantify FRR-ESS

Where to restore and conserve? A regional benefit cost analysis of coral reef protection and restoration for coastal flood resilience.

Momentum is growing for the management of coral reefs as a strategy to reduce climate risks in tropical coastlines. Yet, quantification of the life-time costs, impacts, and benefits remains limited. This study provides one of the first rigorous, spatially explicit, regional-scale Benefit:Cost Analyses (BCA) for coral reef restoration and was designed to meet the BCA requirements of major hazard mitigation funding and programs. This study simulates coastal flooding using a hydrodynamic model under different scenarios representing current coral reef conditions, reef degradation, and reef restora

High-Resolution Adaptive Optics Transscleral Flood Illumination Imaging Allows Phenotyping of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Adaptive optics transscleral flood illumination (AO-TFI) enables in vivo imaging of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) at near-cellular resolution. In this study, we evaluated its potential as a phenotyping tool in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by analyzing disease-associated structural patterns and their correlation with optical coherence tomography (OCT) features. We examined AO-TFI images from 120 eyes diagnosed with either early-to-advanced dry AMD (including geographic atrophy, GA) or neovascular AMD (nvAMD). Images were graded by a masked reader, and patterns were matched to c

How to achieve coordinated and sustainable development between urban flood resilience and ecosystem services at the urban agglomeration scale.

Urban flood resilience (UFR) and ecosystem services are crucial concepts and methods for mitigating flood risks and boosting the coordinated and sustainable development in urban agglomerations. While most studies assess UFR or ecosystem services from a single perspective, the interaction between the two remains insufficiently explored. Here, an integrated analytical framework was established to examine the relationship between the two. Taking the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration as a sample region, the research first constructed an assessment index system for evaluating UFR levels. Then

Microscopic Mechanism Study on Gas-Crude-Oil Interactions During the CO2 Flooding Process in Water-Bearing Reservoirs.

The impact of water on CO2 sequestration and enhanced oil recovery processes is significant. In this study, a CO2-water-film-crude-oil-rock molecular system was established. Then, the influence of water-film thickness on the dissolution and dispersion of CO2 and crude oil under different temperature and pressure scenarios was examined through molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that water films hinder CO2 diffusion into the oil, reducing its ability to lower oil density. When the thickness of the water film increases from 0 nm to 3 nm, the oil density increases by 86.9%, and t

Chasing allosteric inhibition of the SARS-CoV-2 PLpro via molecular dynamics simulations with flooding fragments (MDFFr).

The SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease (PLpro) represents a crucial therapeutic target due to its dual role in viral polyprotein processing and suppression of host immune responses through de-ubiquitination and de-ISGylation activities. To identify novel allosteric druggable sites on PLpro, we developed a molecular dynamics approach with flooding fragments (MDFFr), which extends a previously established method –Molecular Dynamics flooding– enabling broader applicability across biological targets. Using MDFFr, we evaluated interactions of known phenolic inhibitors with SARS-CoV-2 PLpro and identif

Enhancing xanthan hydrogels for water shutoff treatment in sandstone oil reservoirs through core flooding and CCD approach.

This study examines the efficacy of xanthan gum, as a natural polymer, in creating a suitable hydrogel for controlling water production in reservoirs. The study employed the Central Composite Design (CCD) method through bottle tests to evaluate the effect of different compounds on the gelation time and duration of syneresis. To explore the effectiveness of the xanthan-based hydrogels, swelling tests as well as dynamic core flooding tests are performed. Additionally, to enlighten the performance of the xanthan hydrogels, comprehensive set of characterization tests are performed. Nevertheless, t

Risks of parasitic helminth disease outbreaks and influence of physico-chemical factors in flood prone areas of Yaoundé, Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Urbanization coupled with poverty has promoted the exploitation of risk zones like flood-prone areas in the city of Yaoundé. The overcrowding and poor hygiene observed in these areas are responsible for the unsmiling variations in environmental cleanliness, exploitation of river water for domestic purposes thus putting them at risk for parasitic disease transmissions. This study was conducted in order to assess the risks of human helminthiases outbreaks in relation to water physico-chemical factors in the city of Yaoundé. METHOD: Water samples were collected monthly from January t

Rainstorm-induced flood risk assessment in developed urban area using a data-driven approach with watershed units.

Rainstorm flooding in developed urban areas has become a global focus. This study proposes a data-driven approach to urban rainstorm flood risk assessment. In contrast to the existing research, this study focuses on terrain watersheds as an assessment unit. Using Changsha as the study area, an inventory of 238 historical rainstorm flood locations was produced using automatic web crawling and literature data mining. Subsequently, an assessment model was developed based on a Bayesian algorithm and 16 influencing factors, and its accuracy was verified using a receiver operating characteristic cur

A satellite imagery-driven framework for rapid resource allocation in flood scenarios to enhance loss and damage fund effectiveness.

The impact of climate change and urbanization has increased the risk of flooding. During the UN Climate Change Conference 28 (COP 28), an agreement was reached to establish "The Loss and Damage Fund" to assist low-income countries impacted by climate change. However, allocating the resources required for post-flood reconstruction and reimbursement is challenging due to the limited availability of data and the absence of a comprehensive tool. Here, we propose a novel resource allocation framework based on remote sensing and geospatial data near the flood peak, such as buildings and population.

Flooding by sea and brackish waters enhances mobility of Cd, Zn and Pb from airborne dusts in coastal soils.

Sea level rise and extreme weather conditions caused by climatic changes enhance the frequency and length of submersion events in coastal soils, causing deposited airborne dusts to get in contact with marine salts. The behaviour of Cd, Zn and Pb from pedogenetic minerals and from dusts from mining and smelting activities, added to two soils under different agricultural management (arable and grassland) was examined after soil flooding for 1, 7 and 30 days with waters of increasing salinities (0, 4.37, 8.75, 17.25 and 34.5 g L-1). A rain water event following 1 d flooding released an extra amou

Developmental stage and level of submersion in water impact the viability of lone star and winter tick eggs during flooding.

Female ticks deposit large egg clusters that range in size from hundreds to thousands. These clusters are restricted to a deposition site, usually under leaf litter and other debris. These sites can be exposed to periodic flooding, where the cluster of tick eggs can float to the surface or remain underneath organic debris entirely underwater. Here, we examined the viability of egg clusters from winter ticks, Dermacentor albipictus , and lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum , when partially submerged or fully submerged in water in relation to the developmental stages of the eggs. In general, e

Efficient co-stabilization of arsenic and cadmium in farmland soil by schwertmannite under long-term flooding-drying condition.

Simultaneously stabilizing of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in co-contaminated soil presents substantial challenges due to their contrasting chemical properties. Schwertmannite (Sch) is recognized as a potent adsorbent for As pollution, with alkali modification showing promising results in the simultaneous immobilization of both As and Cd. This study systematically investigated the long-term stabilization efficacy of alkali-modified Sch in Cd-As co-contaminated farmland soil over a 200-day flooding-drying period. The results revealed that As showed significant mobility in flooded conditions, w

Invasive Sino-Orbital Aspergillosis and Tinea Corporis Co-Infection in a Returned Traveler from Flooded Sylhet, Bangladesh.

We report a case of co-infection with Aspergillus fumigatus causing invasive sino-orbital aspergillosis and Trichophyton interdigitale tinea corporis in a returned traveler from flooded Sylhet region, Bangladesh. Anthropogenic climate change may lead to increased extreme weather-associated fungal infections. Travel to a flooded area should be considered a risk factor for fungal infection.

Response of dissolved organic matter chemistry to flood control of a large river reservoir during an extreme storm event.

With the frequent occurrence of extreme floods under global climate change-induced storm events, reservoir operation has been highlighted for river flood control, complicating the transport and transformation of riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM), one of the largest reactive carbon pools on earth. In particular, the response of riverine DOM chemistry to reservoir flood control during extreme storm events is still unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, the mechanism of DOM variation in Yangtze River with the world's largest Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) operation during an extreme storm event…

Participatory and Spatial Analyses of Environmental Justice Communities' Concerns about a Proposed Storm Surge and Flood Protection Seawall.

In response to increasing threats from sea-level rise and storm surge, the City of Charleston, South Carolina, and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) propose constructing a seawall around the Charleston peninsula. The proposed seawall will terminate close to lower wealth, predominantly minority communities. These communities are identified as environmental justice (EJ) communities due to their history of inequitable burdens of industrial and urban pollution and proximity to highways and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated Superfund sites. The present study documents communi

Continuous field flooding versus final one-shot CO2 insufflation in minimally invasive mitral valve repair.

BACKGROUND: Insufflation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the operative field to prevent cerebral or myocardial damage by air embolism is a well known strategy in open-heart surgery. However, here is no general consensus on the best delivery approach. METHODS: From January 2018 to November 2021, we retrospectively collected data of one hundred consecutive patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve repair (MIMVR). Of these, fifty patients were insufflated with continuous CO2 1 min before opening the left atrium and ended after its closure, and fifty patients were insufflated with one shot
