Scar sarcoidosis in pseudofolliculitis barbae.

A man with hilar adenopathy had smooth firm purplish papules (lupus pernio) on his face and pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) in his beard area. Biopsies of papules of both the lupus pernio and the PFB revealed non-caseating granulomas consistent with sarcoidosis. This is the first case report of sarcoidosis infiltrating lesions of PFB and the first of lupus pernio co-existing with scar sarcoidosis. In persons with suspected sarcoidosis, enlarged lesions of PFB are sites suitable for confirmatory biopsy. In addition, persons who develop keloid-like papules within their PFB may be providing an ea…

Treatment of perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens with the carbon dioxide laser.

We describe the successful use of the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser for localized surgical therapy in a patient with perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens that was refractory to conservative treatment.

Brittle hair in osteogenesis imperfecta: transmission and scanning electron microscopy and mycologic assay.

The brittle hair fibres from a case of osteogenesis imperfecta were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Normal hair fibres are extremely difficult to infect with T. mentagrophytes. As a tentative assay for biochemical defects of hair fibres, experimental dermatophytic infection of the hair with T. mentagrophytes was performed. The massive growth induced suggested that the experimental fungal infection may indeed indicate a biochemical defect in the hairs from our case of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Alopecia mucinosa. Report of a case with diffuse alopecia and normal-appearing scalp skin.

A 69-year-old man had reversible generalized thinning of the scalp hair and normal-appearing scalp skin that proved to be secondary to follicular mucinosis. This case illustrates that when mild degrees of follicular degeneration and inflammation occur in this disorder, physical findings other than alopecia may be absent. In rare instances, follicular mucinosis can occur as a chronic diffuse noncicatricial alopecia.

Dermatological reactions to lithium: a critical review of the literature.

This article reviews clinical reports of dermatological reactions to lithium. Such reactions include maculopapular, acneiform, and follicular eruptions, psoriasis, and other manifestations. Standard psychiatric texts offer the psychiatrist little information concerning the prevalence or seriousness of these reactions, nor do they discuss the effectiveness of various treatment alternatives. More surprisingly, most dermatology texts do not even describe skin reactions to lithium. Dermatological reactions to lithium may occur more commonly than previously documented, but with the exception of som

[Malassezia related diseases].

The genus Malassezia is now divided into eleven species. Different species initiate or aggravate different skin diseases. In seborroheic dermatitis, M. restricta play an important role, while in atopic dermatitis, M. globosa and/or M. restricta are major cutaneous microflora. M. globosa is a causative species of tinea versicolor, and this species is also a causative species of malassezia folliculitis. We should therefore obtain better knowledge of the ecological and pathogenic roles of malassezia.

Family with "pure" hair-nail ectodermal dysplasia.

"Pure" ectodermal dysplasias are developmental disorders affecting only tissues of ectodermal origin. Two different pure ectodermal dysplasias involving only hair and nails have been described to date. Here we describe congenital nail dystrophy and hypotrichosis associated with folliculitis decalvans in a family suggesting autosomal-dominant transmission. This report documents peculiar clinical and ultrastructural hair findings that fit poorly into previously described conditions. Thus the reported patients could represent a new type of pure ectodermal dysplasia.

[Distal obliterating arteriopathy of the lower limbs in a systemic disease. Treatment with normovolemic hemodilution. [Report of one case]].

The authors report on a 31 year old man with a generalised illness consisting of: buccal aphthous ulcers, distal arteriopathy, multiform cutaneous lesions (necrotising vasculitis, folliculitis, nodules), hypersensitivity at the site of puncture, Raynaud's syndrome and superficial venous thromboses. After the failure of various therapies (calcium heparin, ticlopidine, colchicine, corticoids, immunostimulants), the patient was successfully treated by normovolemic haemodilution on 20 occasions, obtaining each time healing of the skin lesions within 2 to 4 weeks.

A case of possible Behçet's disease, preceded by recurrent knee arthropathy for 5 years, effectively treated with oral colchicine.

We report a case of possible Behçet's disease (BD) preceded by arthropathy for 5 years. A 29-year-old man experienced right knee swelling and pain since April 1999. Thorough examinations were performed, yet a diagnosis was not established. In December 2004 he experienced recurrent aphtha, following folliculitis-like skin lesions. A human leukocyte antigen examination revealed a positive B51 allele and his illness was diagnosed as possible Behçet disease. Colchicine was administered and his symptoms were ameliorated.

[Hyperkeratosis of the keratotic plug type in patients with chronic renal failure and metabolic diseases].

We have noticed in eight male patients transepithelial keratotic plugs which appeared preferentially on zones of supporting points. These plugs evoked in a more or less accurate way, Kyrle's disease or other related syndromes, particularly reactive perforating collagenosis and perforating folliculitis. Seven cases were associated with chronic and severe renal failure complicating a serious diabetes in four cases, one of them with a viral hepatitis. One case has been observed during an important denutrition with digestive disorders.

[Not Available].

Majocchi's granuloma is an uncommon deep fungal folliculitis primarily caused by Trichophyton rubrum. The most common predisposing factors are the use of topical steroids and immunosuppression. In this case report, the cases with similar clinical presentation, an exanthema with perifollicular nodules, pustules, and scaling especially in the periphery of the lesions was seen. The diagnosis is made from clinical, mycological, and histologic examination with the latter demonstrating a perifollicular granulomatous inflammation. Treatment is systemic terbinafine combined with topical antifungal the…

Dermatology Life Quality Index survey in patients with Down syndrome and caregivers.

Down syndrome (DS) is associated with many dermatological conditions, including hidradenitis suppurativa, folliculitis, and alopecia areata. Despite the high incidence of skin conditions in this population, there are no quality of life (QoL) studies in the dermatology literature focused on patients with DS or their caregivers. The frequently used QoL assessment tool, the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), has yet to be studied in this population. This study addresses these disparities by capturing how various skin conditions affect the QoL of people with DS and their caregivers and assessi…

[Clinical symptoms and therapy of necrotizing skin and soft tissue infections].

Skin and soft tissue infections are among the most common diseases requiring surgical treatment. The presentation of patients varies from folliculitis to severe necrotizing infections with a fatal outcome. The diagnosis of a necrotizing infection is often difficult. The correct diagnosis is often made after deterioration of the patient's condition in the rapid course of the disease. The early and correct diagnosis and immediate surgery are decisive for the prognosis. Treatment at a specialized intensive care unit and the administration of a broad spectrum antibiotic are pivotal for the surviva…
