Unusual head trauma by a rearview mirror.

An unusual case of penetrating head injury by rearview mirror is reported. The case demonstrates an important mechanical principle that when a relatively small impact is applied over a small area, it is converted to a large force with potential to cause substantial tissue damage. At 1-year followup the patient showed no complications, following craniotomy and removal of the foreign body.

Ossification of the frontal sinus in juvenile minipigs following water jet application.

BACKGROUND: Obliteration of the frontal sinus is a generally accepted management for patients with severe craniofacial trauma in whom the sinus cannot be repaired or adequately drained. Effective obliteration requires complete removal of mucosa, sufficient filling of the sinus cavity as well as effective occlusion of the nasofrontal duct. The use of various filling materials for sinus obliteration has been described and include autologous fat, bone, muscle and lyophilized cartilage. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In order to appreciate the advantages of the water-jet scalpel an animal study in 10 juve

The endoscopic management of chronic frontal sinusitis associated with frontal sinus posterior table erosion.

Expansile inflammatory diseases of the frontal sinuses may produce erosion of the posterior table of the frontal sinus. In these instances, the bone between sinus mucosa and intracranial dura is absent. Over the past decade, endoscopic frontal sinusotomy has emerged as the preferred technique for the treatment of refractory chronic frontal sinusitis. Endoscopic approaches also have a role in the most advanced instances of frontal sinusitis. A retrospective chart review of patients who were treated for frontal sinusitis with erosion of the frontal sinus posterior table was performed. Eight pati

Cosmetic repair of a facial deformity by use of a silicone implant in a horse.

A heat-vulcanized silicone implant was used for cosmetic repair of a facial deformity in a horse. The deformity had resulted from fracture of the frontal bone into the frontal sinus 6 months earlier. Normal facial contour was restored by suturing the sculpted implant to the periosteum over the defect. Results 1 year after surgery were excellent.

Experimental results of cancellous autografts and frozen allografts transplanted into the canine frontal sinus.

Autograft and frozen allograft cancellous bone were each placed into one of the canine frontal sinus cavities of eight animals and analyzed by radiographic and histologic methods after one year. Complete and equal bony obliteration was demonstrated. Thus no advantage was seen in using an autograft over a frozen allograft in obliterating the frontal sinus cavity.

Late recurrence of a frontal sinus cholesteatoma.

The longest recorded recurrence of a frontal sinus cholesteatoma with involvement of the orbit, frontal bone, and floor of the anterior cranial fossa is presented. Radical surgery is required and often craniotomy is necessary. Bony reconstruction of defects should not be undertaken until recurrence has not been present for at least a year. A review of the literature and a discussion of the origin of cholesteatomas is given.

[Use of porous permeable titanium nickelide implants in surgery of the frontal and maxillary sinuses (a clinical-experimental study)].

The purpose of the investigation was to study the efficacy of closing the bone defect in facial walls of the frontal and maxillary sinuses, formed as a result of their purulent inflammation, by porous permeable titanium nickelide. Analysis of the experimental data (18 dogs) and clinical observations (20 patients in whom the anatomic structure and function of frontal and maxillary sinuses with osteomyelitis were restored by an antibiotic pooling implantation material) gives evidence that the material can be well used to reconstruct an organ with an infected wound. The porous structure of the bi

Evaluation of fetal nasofrontal angle in the second trimester in normal pregnancies.

PURPOSE: The nasal bone is one of the important fetal structures to be radiologically evaluated in the first and second trimesters. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the nasal root and to determine the normal range of the naso-frontal angle, which may potentially be used as a predictive or diagnostic parameter in the diagnosis of the above-mentioned syndromes or other congenital abnormalities with associated nasal features using obstetric ultrasonography in normal fetuses. METHODS: We evaluated the naso-frontal angle using transabdominal ultrasonography in 195 healthy fetuses between the 18

Virtual reconstruction and geometric morphometric analysis of the Kocabaş hominin fossil from Turkey: Implications for taxonomy and evolutionary significance.

The Kocabaş specimen comes from a travertine quarry near the homonymous village in the Denizli basin (Turkey). The specimen comprises three main fragments: portions of the right and left parietal and left and right parts of the frontal bone. The fossil was assumed to belong to the Homo erectus s.l. hypodigm by some authors, whereas others see similarities with Middle Pleistocene fossils (Broken Hill 1/Kabwe, Bodo, or Ceprano). Here, we present the first attempt to make a complete reconstruction of the missing medial portion of the frontal bone and a comprehensive geometric morphometric analysi…

An algorithm for management of residual posttraumatic calvarial defects in adults.

For the discussion of options in late reconstruction of residual posttraumatic calvarial defects in adults, the calvaria is divided into three reconstructive zones. Zone 1 comprises the frontal sinus region and the contour of the supraorbital brow; Zone 2 comprises the smooth, cosmetically visible prehairline forehead; Zone 3 comprises the posthairline area and the calvaria. The particular reconstructive requirements (autogenous bone versus alloplastic material) of each zone are described and illustrated with clinical cases. The merits of bone from various donor sites and those of alloplastic

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the orbit.

Aneurysmal bone cysts of the skull are rare, and orbital involvement of these cysts is even less frequent. We present CT, MR imaging, and histopathologic findings of an aneurysmal bone cyst of the orbit in a 13-year-old female adolescent. The tumor mainly involved the frontal bone. MR imaging findings of the aneurysmal bone cyst of the skull were highly suggestive of the diagnosis.

Automatic frontal sinus recognition in computed tomography images for person identification.

In many cases of person identification the use of biometric features obtained from the hard tissues of the human body, such as teeth and bones, may be the only option. This paper presents a new method of person identification based on frontal sinus features, extracted from computed tomography (CT) images of the skull. In this method, the frontal sinus is automatically segmented in the CT image using an algorithm developed in this work. Next, shape features are extracted from both hemispheres of the segmented frontal sinus by using BAS (Beam Angle Statistics) method. Finally, L2 distance is use

[Pott's puffy tumor, a rare complication of frontal sinusitis].

Port's puffy tumour (PPT), corresponding to frontal osteomyelitis causing erosion of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus and subperiosteal abscess, is a rare but serious complication of frontal sinusitis or trauma to the region. It can occur even despite the use of antibiotics and requires surgical drainage of the abscess, excision of pathological tissues and obliteration of the frontal sinus by various materials. It can rarely progress to life-threatening intracranial extension. Practitioners must be extremely cautious in the presence of clinical signs suggestive of Pott's puffy tumour. Th

Compound frontal sinus injuries with intracranial penetration.

Extensive trauma to the forehead, resulting in large penetrating wounds of the frontal sinus that extend into the frontal lobes of the brain, has traditionally been treated by frontal sinus ablation. Although this operation eliminates dead space, it leaves the patient with a depressed area in the forehead with little protection for the brain. The success of Nadell and Kline in replacing skull fragments following compound depressed skull fractures yet avoiding infection has spurred us to attempt this technique in penetrating injuries of the frontal sinus. By preserving the anterior frontal sinu

Staged Intracranial Free Tissue Transfer and Cranioplasty for a Refractory Nasal-cranial Base Fistula.

After a transnasal endoscopic resection of a high-grade adenoid cystic carcinoma that underwent adjuvant chemoradiation, there was delayed r … val, prolonged IV antibiotics, and hyperbaric oxygen treatment. The nasocranial fistula and chronic frontal bone osteomyelitis persisted despite the previous interventions. The patient underwent a frontal bone removal and obliteration of the anterior cranial base fistula with a free vastus lateralis muscle flap. At 4 weeks postoperatively, the intranasal porti …

[Cranialization of the frontal sinus. Indications, technique and results].

The osteoplastic frontal sinus surgery with obliteration of the sinus has been established in the therapy of frontal sinus diseases that can not be drainaged permanently or healed through an endonasal access. The obliteration of the frontal sinus is endangered in cases of multiple fracturing of the posterior frontal sinus wall or if it has been destroyed by an inflammatory process. In these problematic cases obliteration bears the danger of complications and cranialization of the frontal sinus is therefore the method of choice. We review 8 patients who were operated on using the cranialization
