During the 20th century, only two persons have been awarded the Nobel Prize for psychiatric discoveries, Julius Wagner-Jauregg in 1927 for t … g neurosurgeon. These leucotomies were done using injections of a small amount of alcohol into each frontal lobe through a single burr hole on each side of the skull, and the findings from the first 20 patients were published soon after that in 1936. It has, however, been difficult to reconstruct the path leading Moniz to frontal leucotomy, due to his unwillin …

Neuroinflammation has been shown to constitute a crucial mechanism in the pathophysiology of epileptic brain and several genes of inflammatory mediators have been detected in surgically resected hippocampus tissue but not in non-related seizure brain regions. Interestingly, it has been reported an olfactory dysfunction in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Our aim was to quantify the gene expression of inflammatory-related and nitric oxide synthase genes in olfactory bulbs (OB) tissue from FLE patients. RNA was isolated from OB resection of FLE patients and autopsy subjects without any neurological …

BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience childhood trauma are vulnerable to various psychological and behavioral problems throughout their lifetime. This study aimed to investigate whether individuals with childhood trauma show altered frontal lobe activity during response inhibition tasks.
METHODS: In total, 157 healthy individuals were recruited and instructed to perform a Go/Nogo task during electroencephalography recording. Source activities of N2 and P3 of Nogo event-related potentials (ERP) were analyzed. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS) were ap…

Chronic opiate abuse accelerates the development of cognitive deficits in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 patients. To investigate morphine's effects on viral infection of the central nervous system, we applied chronic morphine treatment to the LP-BM5 murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (MAIDS) model. LP-BM5 infection induces proinflammatory cytokine/chemokine production, correlating to increased blood-brain barrier permeability. Morphine treatment significantly increased LP-BM5 viral load in the hippocampus, but not in the frontal lobe. Morphine reduced the chemokine CCL5 to non-in…

BACKGROUND: Profound mental retardation in phenylketonuria (PKU) can be prevented by a low phenylalanine (Phe) diet. However, even patients treated early have inconsistently shown deficits in several frontal lobe-related neuropsychological tasks such as the widely accepted Stroop task. The goal of this study was to investigate whether adult patients exhibit altered brain activation in Stroop-related locations in comparison to healthy controls and if an acute increase in blood Phe levels in patients has an effect on activation patterns.
METHODS: Seventeen male, early-treated patients with clas…

Dementia of Lewy body disease is the second most common degenerative cause of dementia after Alzheimer's disease, among all the dementias. The core features are a progressive dementia, fluctuations in cognitive functions, visual hallucinations, and spontaneous parkinsonism. Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, severe neuroleptic sensitivity, and low dopamine transporter uptake in basal ganglia are other suggestive features. Behavioral abnormalities are commonly present in the form of aggressive behavior, irritability, and uninhibited behaviors. These are mostly seen in the advanced stag

OBJECTIVES: Experimental data and case reports of patients with intractable epilepsy treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subtha … nes of epilepsy patients is associated with favorable seizure reduction after STN DBS in 2 cases of frontal lobe epilepsy. Although the exact mechanism remains unknown, our findings suggest that the perfusion changes after STN DBS in frontal lobe epilepsy patients are quite different from those in subjects with Parkinson's disease. Our preliminary data suggest …

PURPOSE: Neuropsychological studies suggest frontal lobe dysfunctions in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). In this study we investigated whether an underlying mechanism could be a regional neuronal damage not visible with structural magnetic resonance (MR), but detectable with magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS).
METHODS: The study included 15 patients with JME and 10 matched healthy controls. Quantitative single voxel MRS was conducted at 1.5 Tesla by using a STEAM sequence (TR/TE/TM = 6,000/30/13.7 ms). The voxels were placed over the right cerebellum, right thalamus, and t…

Frontal lobe degenerative dementias, the second largest degenerative dementia group after Alzheimer's disease, is dominated by frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type. It is classified in a group also containing Pick's disease, progressive aphasia and dementia in motor neuron disease. Frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type is clinically marked by frontal lobe symptoms and frontotemporal reduction of blood flow. From a histopathological point of view it is characterized by gliosis, microvacuolation, neuronal atrophy-loss and 40-50% loss of synapses in three superficial cortical…

OBJECTIVE: Our objectives were to show that an opaque azygos lobe on the anteroposterior chest radiograph can be a normal finding and to investigate the causes of the increased density.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively examined 53 patients seen during a 3-year period in whom an azygos lobe was detected on chest radiographs. The size of the lobe was determined by the location of the trigone on chest radiographs. The trigone is the triangular area that marks the upper portion of the azygos fissure. If the trigone was located on the lateral aspect of the pulmonary apex, the azygos lobe wa

INTRODUCTION: Mortality risk of glioma varies significantly by tumor primary site. This study aims to explore the mechanisms underlying such … network perturbation analysis.
RESULTS: Multivariate Cox regression showed that patients with the frontal lobe as the primary site had significantly higher mortality risk than those with tumors in other brain lobes (P < 0.001). This finding was validated after propensity score matching. Subgroup analysis and interaction analysis revealed a significant intera …

The lateralized efficacy of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) remains insufficiently explored. We report a case of drug-resistant epilepsy with bilateral frontal lobe seizure onset, treated with left cervical VNS. Preoperative video- electroencephalogram revealed predominant interictal discharges in the right hemisphere and frequent seizures from both hemispheres. Following VNS, overall seizure frequency decreased. Notably, stereo-electroencephalography performed 15 months postoperatively showed a marked reduction in right-sided seizures, while left-sided seizures remained frequent. This case high…

Micrographia, characterised by small handwriting, is often linked to Parkinson's disease, but also resulted to injured brain lesions. The left-handed women in her 20s developed 'fast micrographia' after a traumatic brain injury from a traffic accident, showing bilateral subdural haematomas and frontal lobe contusions, but she had no paralysis and extrapyramidal symptoms. Neuropsychological tests showed reduced processing speed and memory deficits, aligning with frontal lobe damage. A 3-month handwriting training programme improved performance with cues, but issues persisted without them. This …

OBJECTIVE: Neuroimaging studies reveal frontal lobe (FL) contributions to memory encoding. Accordingly, memory impairments are documented in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Still, little is known about the structural or functional correlates of such impairments. Particularly, material specificity of functional changes in cerebral activity during memory encoding in FLE is unclear.
METHODS: We compared 24 FLE patients (15 right-sided) undergoing presurgical evaluation with 30 healthy controls on a memory fMRI-paradigm of learning scenes, faces, and words followed by an out-of-scanner recognition t…

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the relative contribution of frontal and anterior temporal lobes in semantic knowledge of social norms in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Therefore, this study examined performance of FTD patients with either frontal (F-FTD, left temporal (LT-FTD) or bitemporal lobe atrophy (BT-FTD) on the Social Norms Questionnaire (SNQ) and explored what accounts for the variance in the SNQ-break norm subscale (i.e., endorsement of inappropriate behaviors).
METHODS: Using data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC), groups were matched for age and education

BACKGROUND/AIM: Diabetes mellitus, characterized by hyperglycemia, causes various complications, one of which is memory dysfunction. The frontal lobe is known to be responsible for impaired memory function due to hyperglycemia and is associated with oxidative stress-mediated neuronal cell apoptosis. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is reported to have neuroprotective effects. However, its effect on the frontal lobe in diabetes mellitus (DM) rats is not widely known. This research aimed to elucidate the effect of CGA on the mRNA expressions of SOD1, SOD2, p53, and Bcl-2 in the frontal lobe of DM rats.
