Comparative analysis of 3D reconstruction of paranasal sinuses for simulated personal identification using Dolphin imaging and mimics software.

3D reconstructed paranasal sinuses are gaining increasing attention for personal identification. This study assessed the consistency between Dolphin Imaging and Mimics in 3D paranasal sinus reconstruction and the comparative efficacy of combined frontal, sphenoid, and maxillary sinuses versus isolated frontal sinus for personal identification through simulation of ante-mortem and post-mortem data. Retrospective multi-slice CT scans from 100 patients (21-84 years; 50 for each gender) were used to generate 3D models of combined sinuses via both software. Three groups were established: (1) 100 ma

Proposal for staging of inflammatory lesions in the frontal region.

Frontal swelling can be due to multiple etiologies, including: mucocele, Pott's puffy tumor, fibro osseous lesions, benign and malignant neoplasms of the nose and paranasal sinuses, intracranial lesions, and metastasis. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical protocol used for the diagnosis of patients presented with frontal swelling and the proposal for staging of inflammatory lesions. We performed an observational retrospective analysis. We found 7 cases of patients with frontal swelling: 4 cases secondary to inflammatory pathology (3 Potts puffy tumors and one frontal mucoc

Frontal sinus disease. IV. Cellular response to experimentally-induced infection.

The pathogenesis of chronic frontal sinusitis is poorly understood. The canine frontal sinus model was developed to isolate experimentally the variables involved. We have recently determined that blockage of the naso-frontal duct does not, by itself, produce sinusitis or mucocele experimentally. The purpose of the present investigation is to examine the histological and ultrastructural responses of the sinus mucosa to artificially-induced infection. Bone wax was implanted in the canine frontal sinus via an osteoplastic flap, and subsequently removed three months later. Radiological, histologic…

Extracranial sinonasal tract meningioma: a case report.

Extracranial meningioma is an unusual tumor, mainly found in the head and neck area. Before surgical removal and histopathological examination, this diagnosis is rarely considered. We report a case of an extracranial meningioma located in the frontal sinuses of a 65-year-old-woman. Symptomatology included trouble of vision due to bilateral exophtalmos and mild headaches. Bilateral exophtalmos was secondary to the development of huge frontal mucoceles. These mucoceles grew slowly due to the frontal recesses blockage by the extracranial meningioma. External approach was performed with removal of

[Hypernephroma metastasis in frontal sinus].

PURPOSE: We present a case of metastatic neoplasia in the right frontal sinus derived from and hypernephroma, with a clinical picture that initially was interpreted as a mucocele. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty years old male. Personal history: prostatectomy and left nephrectomy because of hypernephroma three years before. In december 92 the patient reported a protrusion in the right frontal sinus. CT scans and NMR revealed a breakage of the external and internal walls of the right frontal sinus and the right orbital roof. In february 93 a surgical exploration of the frontal sinus revealed the m

Direct access to a frontal sinus osteoma and reconstruction of the orbital roof displaced by the lesion by titanium mesh.

Osteomas are the most common benign tumors of the paranasal sinuses. They are usually localized in the frontal sinus and less often in the other paranasal sinuses. In this article, we report the surgical treatment of an unknown frontal sinus osteoma discovered after an acute exophthalmos. We have chosen an external approach to obtain a radical excision of the tumor, but we prefer a direct frontal incision following a horizontal wrinkle to the classic bicoronal flap to avoid an unsightly scar because of patient's hair loss. We discuss the surgical approach, the reconstruction of the roof of the

Selected oral, pharyngeal, and upper respiratory conditions in the cat. Oral tumors, nasopharyngeal and middle ear polyps, and chronic rhinitis and sinusitis.

Chronic rhinitis/sinusitis in the cat can be an annoying, persistent problem. Intermittent sneezing with mucopurulent discharge is the most common clinical sign. Response to medical management is variable, and some cats will spontaneously resolve. In the cat with unresponsive chronic rhinitis/sinusitis, surgical intervention may be attempted in order to relieve obstruction, afford better drainage, or obliterate the frontal sinuses with fat grafts. Success has been variable with all means of management. A guarded prognosis for complete cure should be given at the outset when managing a cat with

Unusual Presentation of Pott's puffy tumour in a child: our recent experience and review of the literature.

Pott's puffy tumour (PPT) is a rarely seen, but highly important, complication of frontal sinusitis. Early recognition followed by prompt imaging and treatment of this condition are essential to improve patient outcomes and prevent complications. This case report describes an atypical presentation of radiologically confirmed PPT in a boy who presented with a 2.5-week history of progressive frontal headache and midline frontal swelling. Flexible nasendoscopy revealed no acute findings. Prompt CT imaging confirmed the diagnosis and early surgical intervention via endoscopic approach with aggress…

Possible therapeutic trepanation on a frontal sinus of a skull from the Old Kingdom period of Egypt.

Trepanation has been reported on skulls from major ancient civilizations since the Neolithic period. In this study, on a skull excavated from the Qau village site during the Old Kingdom period of ancient Egypt (7th to 8th dynasties; 2181-2160 BCE), we found a highly probable sign of therapeutic trepanation in the frontal bone. The practice of trepanation was suggested by the healing sign observed at the site on the frontal bone of case QAU-26. Based on our radiological findings, we presume that this ancient Egyptian male likely suffered from frontal sinus pathology, which may have led to the a

Sinus headaches: avoiding over- and mis-diagnosis.

'Sinus headache' is a term used by many patients and primary-care physicians and, contrary to popular belief, sinus headaches are uncommon. Headaches that are due to sinusitis are confined to a minority of patients who have acute frontal sinusitis or sphenoiditis. The International Headache Society classification is robust in qualifying the term sinus headache and says that "chronic sinusitis is not validated as a cause of headache and facial pain unless relapsing into an acute stage". The vast majority of people who present with a symmetrical frontal or temporal headache, sometimes with an oc…

Pott puffy tumor: a rare complication of sinusitis.

Pott puffy tumor, a rare complication of sinusitis in adults, appears as a localized swelling over the frontal region or forehead. This swelling is due to a subperiosteal abscess resulting from osteomyelitis of the underlying frontal bone. This condition may be associated with an epidural purulent collection, subdural empyema, and intracerebral abscess. This entity is rare--even forgotten--since the advent of modern powerful antibiotics. A 27-year-old male was referred to ENT OPD with forehead swelling, fever and headache. The patient had mooth doughy swelling of the foreheadwith surrounding c

Current Concepts in Frontal Sinus Fracture Management.

Frontal sinus fractures typically reflect high-energy trauma and must be evaluated and treated carefully to avoid long-term problems including contour deformity, sinus dysfunction, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, chronic sinusitis, and mucocele formation. This article outlines frontal sinus anatomy, diagnostic pathways, and evolving treatment concepts in detail. An anatomically driven treatment algorithm is emphasized, with a focus on preservation of sinus function whenever possible and preference for conservative management. Advanced procedures, such as endoscopic sinus surgery and cranial

Glass in the frontal sinus: 28-year delayed presentation.

Reports of delayed presentation of foreign bodies in the frontal sinus are infrequent and likely to become rarer with the widespread availability of computed tomography in the last 2 decades. We present a case in which glass from a road traffic injury was found in the frontal sinus, causing symptoms of frontal sinusitis 28 years after the initial injury. We also present a review of the literature.

Radiological Assessment of the Anatomy of Frontal Recess Cells and the Anterior Ethmoidal Artery.

It is necessary for the surgeon to be familiar with frontal recess anatomy during an endoscopic approach to the frontal sinuses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of frontal recess cells in Japanese adults as well as the association between the frontal recess and the location of the anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA). The frontal recess cells and the AEAs were retrospectively evaluated in CT scans of the nasal and paranasal sinuses for 89 patients. The prevalence of agger nasi cells was 90.7%. The frequency of frontal cell types 1, 2, 3 and 4 was 28.8, 0.6, 2.6 and 0%, respecti

Frontal Angle: A New Predictor of Difficulty in Endoscopic Frontal Sinus Surgery-A Preliminary Computed Tomography Study.

OBJECTIVES: The possibility of visualization of the frontal sinus during endoscopic surgery depends on 3-dimensional configuration of the frontal sinus opening (FSO). We aimed to determine the prevalence of unfavorable angulation of the lower part of the posterior wall of the frontal sinus and its relation to FSO diameter. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-eight computed tomography (CT) scans were retrospectively reviewed to measure (1) the angle between the nasal floor and the plane tangent to the posterior table of the frontal sinus above the most posterior aspect of the anterior buttress (fr

Frontal Bone is Thicker in Women and Frontal Sinus is Larger in Men: A Morphometric Analysis.

Cranial bone thickness and frontal sinus size are important parameters to be known before cranial procedures. Deep-learning systems have become popular for making bulk analyses to diagnose diseases/disorders and plan treatment algorithms in diverse fields of medicine. Deep-learning systems would be valuable assets also for cranial procedures. Deep-learning systems need normative values and variances of the population on which they are used. In the present study, the authors aimed to find out the normative values for skull bone thickness at 4 anatomical locations, and frontal sinus size. the au
