Neuroimaging of stroke recovery from aphasia - Insights into plasticity of the human language network.

The role of left and right hemisphere brain regions in language recovery after stroke-induced aphasia remains controversial. Here, we summarize how neuroimaging studies increase the current understanding of functional interactions, reorganization and plasticity in the language network. We first discuss the temporal dynamics across the time course of language recovery, with a main focus on longitudinal studies from the acute to the chronic phase after stroke. These studies show that the functional contribution of perilesional and spared left hemisphere as well as contralesional right hemisphere

Site Common Information-Guided Site-to-Individual-to-Global Multi-View GCN for Psychiatric Diagnosis.

Magnetic resonance neuroimaging (MRI)-based brain functional connections show significant potential in aiding the diagnosis and assessment of psychiatric disorders. Current neuroimaging studies utilize substantial amounts of data, frequently from multiple centers, to enhance the confidence of the results. However, multi-center neuroimaging studies face challenges due to inter-site variability caused by differences in scanner configurations and acquisition protocols, leading to low data consistency with limited generality. To address these challenges, we propose a novel site common information

Sex difference in brain functional connectivity of hippocampus in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), affecting nearly 6.5 million people, is the fifth leading cause of death in individuals 65 years or older in the USA. Prior research has shown that AD disproportionality affects females; females have a greater incidence rate, perform worse on a variety of neuropsychological tasks, and have greater total brain atrophy. Recent research has linked these sex differences to neuroimaging markers of brain pathology, such as hippocampal volumes. Specifically, research from our lab found that functional connectivity from the hippocampus to the precuneus cortex and brain stem w

Neuroimaging and neuromodulation approaches to study eating behavior and prevent and treat eating disorders and obesity.

Functional, molecular and genetic neuroimaging has highlighted the existence of brain anomalies and neural vulnerability factors related to obesity and eating disorders such as binge eating or anorexia nervosa. In particular, decreased basal metabolism in the prefrontal cortex and striatum as well as dopaminergic alterations have been described in obese subjects, in parallel with increased activation of reward brain areas in response to palatable food cues. Elevated reward region responsivity may trigger food craving and predict future weight gain. This opens the way to prevention studies usin

Neuroimaging changes in pre-treatment and post-treatment patients with bipolar disorder and their relationship with genetic characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder (BD) patients may exhibit common and significant changes in brain activity before and after treatment. We aim to explore the changes in brain functional connectivity (FC) in BD before and after treatment, as well as their neuroimaging homogeneity, heterogeneity, and genetic variations. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the seed points and whole-brain FC of the Salience Network (SN) and Dorsal Attention Network (DAN) in 83 healthy controls (HC) and 77 patients with BD (38 of whom completed follow-up), along with their genetic neuroimaging associations. RESULTS: T

Neuroimaging in aging and neurologic diseases.

Neuroimaging biomarkers for neurologic diseases are important tools, both for understanding pathology associated with cognitive and clinical symptoms and for differential diagnosis. This chapter explores neuroimaging measures, including structural and functional measures from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and molecular measures primarily from positron emission tomography (PET), in healthy aging adults and in a number of neurologic diseases. The spectrum covers neuroimaging measures from normal aging to a variety of dementias: late-onset Alzheimer's disease [AD; including mild cognitive impa

Interaction Between Neuropsychiatric Symptoms and Cognitive Performance in Parkinson's Disease: What Do Clinical and Neuroimaging Studies Tell Us?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Parkinson's disease was studied for a long time from the prism of a motor impairment. Recent advances have outlined the importance of cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in the PD equation. This review concentrates on the present possibilities of using neuroimaging techniques in order to quantify the cognitive performance and NPS in PD patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Mild cognitive impairment as well as many NPS have been acknowledged as important criteria for assessing the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease and have been shown as potential factors in

Mapping the psychopathic brain: Divergent neuroimaging findings converge onto a common brain network.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by a constellation of interpersonal, affective, lifestyle, and antisocial features. Its neural underpinnings remain poorly understood due to the discrepancies in result of functional neuroimaging studies. Here, we tackled this lack of replication by investigating whether heterogeneous peak locations associated with psychopathy could in fact map onto a common functional connectivity network. A coordinate-based meta-analysis of 38 functional neuroimaging studies (40 independent samples) on psychopathy revealed only weak spatial convergence acro…

The Neural Correlates of Developmental Prosopagnosia: Twenty-Five Years on.

Faces play a crucial role in social interactions. Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) refers to the lifelong difficulty in recognizing faces despite the absence of obvious signs of brain lesions. In recent decades, the neural substrate of this condition has been extensively investigated. While early neuroimaging studies did not reveal significant functional and structural abnormalities in the brains of individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DPs), recent evidence identifies abnormalities at multiple levels within DPs' face-processing networks. The current work aims to provide an overview of

Brain functional abnormalities in the amygdala subregions is associated with anxious depression.

BACKGROUND: Functional neuroimaging studies have provided strong support for the critical role the amygdala plays in emotional processing. The amygdala is composed of three primary distinct nuclei that have different functions in emotional regulation. Anxious depression (AD) was considered as a common dimensional symptom of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). However, the neuroimaging basis of this special MDD subtype remains largely unknown. Therefore, it is necessary to study the functional connectivity of the amygdala's subregions in AD patients. METHODS: Eighty-three patients with AD, 70 non…

Corticobasal syndrome: neuroimaging and neurophysiological advances.

Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by 4R tau protein deposition in several brain regions that clinically manifests itself as a heterogeneous atypical parkinsonism typically expressed in adulthood. The prototypical clinical phenotype of CBD is corticobasal syndrome (CBS). Important insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying motor and higher cortical symptoms in CBS have been gained by using advanced neuroimaging and neurophysiological techniques. Structural and functional neuroimaging studies often show asymmetric cortical and subcorti…

Brain Structural and Functional Alteration Network Localization of Visual Hallucinations.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Visual hallucinations (VH), a key symptom in neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, are associated with a more severe psychopathological profile and less favorable outcome. Neuroimaging research has revealed widespread brain regions involved in VH, echoing the updated notion that neuropsychiatric symptoms correspond more closely to interconnected brain networks than to single brain regions. However, there is still a dearth of studies examining brain network localization of VH. STUDY DESIGN: We initially identified brain structural and functional alterations sp

Functional imaging correlates of childhood trauma: A qualitative review of past research and emerging trends.

Childhood trauma exposure is common and is associated with poor clinical outcomes in adolescence along with mental health and sociodemographic challenges in adulthood. While many strategies exist to investigate the biological imprint of childhood trauma exposure, functional neuroimaging is a robust and growing technology for non-invasive studies of brain activity following traumatic experience and the relationship of childhood trauma exposure with psychopathology, cognition, and behavior. In this review, we discuss three popular approaches for discerning functional neural correlates to early l…

Abnormal interhemispheric homotopic functional connectivity is correlated with gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder.

The severity of major depressive disorder (MDD) can be aggravated by gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, but the neuroimaging mechanism underlying GI symptoms still remains unclear. In this study, we recruited 52 medication-free and first-episode MDD patients (35 with GI symptoms and 17 without GI symptoms) and 28 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls to explore the inter-group differences in neuroimaging findings. All the participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan, and the functional connectivities that were reported to be abnormal in MDD w

Functional Network Alterations in Patients With Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment Characterized Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is conceptualized as a cognitive disorder characterized by memory deficits. Patients with aMCI are treated as prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and have an increased likelihood of developing into AD. The investigation of aMCI is therefore fundamental to the early detection and intervention of AD. Growing evidence has shown that functional network alterations induced by cognition impairment can be captured by advanced neuroimaging techniques. In this study, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), an affordable, robust and portable neuro

Large-scale Meta-analysis Suggests Low Regional Modularity in Lateral Frontal Cortex.

Extensive fMRI study of human lateral frontal cortex (LFC) has yet to yield a consensus mapping between discrete anatomy and psychological states, partly due to the difficulty of inferring mental states from brain activity. Despite this, there have been few large-scale efforts to map the full range of psychological states across the entirety of LFC. Here, we used a data-driven approach to generate a comprehensive functional-anatomical mapping of LFC from 11 406 neuroimaging studies. We identified putatively separable LFC regions on the basis of whole-brain co-activation, revealing 14 clusters
