Investigating the relationship between health and gender equality: What role do maternal, reproductive, and sexual health services play?

Examining the causal nexus between health services and gender equality is of paramount significance in policy formulation and academic inqui … and labour market outcomes. Furthermore, public healthcare infrastructure contributes to combating gender-based violence by facilitating incident reporting and access to protection. Recognizing, documenting, and monitoring these co-benefits arising from improved women's health are pivotal for delineating future health sector priorities and advancing the global gender …

Prevalence and associated factors of interpersonal violence in organized sport in a population-based sample of Quebec (Canada) adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies usually examine interpersonal violence (IV) in sport using convenience samples, potentially biasing exposure estimates. This study aimed to estimate IV prevalence and identify associated factors in a population-based sample of Quebec adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based sample (Study on the Experiences of Adolescents in Sport Contexts in Quebec - ÉVAQ) nested within the representative Quebec Health Survey of High School Students (QHSHSS) was employed. Between November 2022 and June 2023, students from 485 high schools were recruited for the ÉVA

Prevalence and associated factors of depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy: a population based study in rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the associated factors of antepartum depressive and anxiety symptoms (ADS and AAS) in low-income count … y during antenatal care. Policies aimed at encouraging practical support during pregnancy, reducing gender-based violence, supporting women with poor partner relationships, and identifying previous depression may ameliorate the potentially harmful consequences of antepartum depression and anxiety for the women and their family, particularly children.

Childhood Adversity and Offense-Supportive Cognitions Among Czech Adults with a Sexual Interest in Violence or Children.

Individuals with paraphilic interests in sexual violence or children may be more likely to sexually offend if they possess offense-supportive cognitions. These cognitions may develop in response to childhood adversity. However, this idea is largely based on research in men convicted of sexual offenses and may not generalize to non-incarcerated adults with paraphilic interests. In a sample of 178 adults screened for paraphilic interests in violence or children (from the general Czech population), we hypothesized that childhood sexual abuse and emotional neglect would be associated with offense-

Child Sexual Abuse: Forensic Medical Assessment of the Traumatic Injuries Over the Victim's Body.

Child sexual abuse is a public health problem that affects children worldwide in all ethnic, educational, and socioeconomic groups. These assaults are extremely dangerous not only due to their direct physical traumas received at the time of the abuse, but they also have long-term consequences that can worsen the future quality of the victim's life. A retrospective study of all cases related to child sexual abuse for five years was performed by materials of the Clinic of Forensic Medicine and Deontology, Sofia, Bulgaria. Ninety-five cases involve children from both genders. The traumatic injuri

Sexual Violence Against Children in Sports and Exercise: A Systematic Literature Review.

Sexual violence against children in sports receives little research attention. The aim of this Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-based systematic literature review was to synthesize the up-to-date knowledge and identify the already known and the still unknown information in this area. The literature search yielded seven eligible studies for inclusion. Their key outcomes suggest that sexual violence against children in sports is prevalent. Girls are more often the victims than boys, but gender appears to mediate the disclosure. Minority groups are at higher risk

Measuring Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence and Abuse in the Chinese Context: Development Study and Content Validity Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Technology-facilitated sexual violence and abuse (TFSVA) encompasses a range of behaviors where digital technologies are used to enable both virtual and in-person sexual violence. Given that TFSVA is an emerging and continually evolving form of sexual abuse, it has been challenging to establish a universally accepted definition or to develop standardized measures for its assessment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to address the significant gap in research on TFSVA within the Chinese context. Specifically, it sought to develop a TFSVA measurement tool with robust content validity, tai

Gender, Race, and Risk: Intersectional Risk Management in the Sale of Sex Online.

Sex worker experience of risk (e.g., physical violence or rape) is shaped by race, gender, and context. For web-based sex workers, experience of risk is comparatively minimal; what is unclear is how web-based sex workers manage risk and if online advertising plays a role in risk management. Building on intersectionality theory and research exploring risk management in sex work, we content-analyzed 600 escort advertisements from Backpage.com ( http://www.backpage.com ) to explore risk management in web-based sex work. To guide our research we asked: Do advertisements contain risk management mes

METHODS: The research is qualitative and community-based, including 15 interviews with mothers living in emergency shelters and a group interview with nine professionals. An advisory group was formed through partnership with community services to provide project oversight and guide and interpret the results. Experiences of violence among people with severe mental illness: social, biographical and institutional factors (EVIO). A study protocol for a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness (SMI) face a significantly higher risk of victimization than the general population. Beyond physical harm, such experiences can severely impact mental health and recovery processes. Empirical research on violence prevalence among people with SMI in Germany is limited, with little understanding of mechanisms, the impact of gender, and the victim-perpetrator overlap. In order to develop successful prevention strategies against victimization, a comprehensive understanding of the complex phenomenon of victimization is needed. The study aims to develop

The contribution of childhood emotional abuse to teen dating violence among child protective services-involved youth.

OBJECTIVE: For child protective services (CPS) youth who may have experienced more than one form of maltreatment, the unique contribution of emotional abuse may be over-looked when other forms are more salient and more clearly outside of accepted social norms for parenting. This study considers the unique predictive value of childhood emotional abuse for understanding adolescent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology and dating violence. Further, PTSD symptomatology is assessed as an explanatory bridge in the emotional abuse-teen dating violence link. METHODS: A random sample of

A Meta-Analysis of Friends with Benefits Relationships: Examining Sexual Features, Sexual and Mental Health, Violence/Aggression, and Gender.

For over two decades, scholars have studied friends with benefits relationships (FWBRs), or the distinct casual sexual relationship that incorporates sexual activity within an already existing friendship without expectations for commitment. The plethora of research spans multiple disciplines and has been measured in various ways. As a result, many mixed results within this body of work exist. This study presents an omnibus meta-analysis based on an extensive and systematic literature search. We analyzed studies (k = 38) that focused on five conceptual clusters: sexual features, sexual health r

Women with disabilities' experiences of intimate partner violence: a qualitative study from Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a prevalent form of gender-based violence affecting one in three women globally. It is also a preventable cause of ill-health, disability, and death. Current research suggests that women with disabilities are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing violence throughout their lifetime. They are almost twice as likely to experience violence compared to men with disabilities or men and women without disabilities. Additionally, they experience higher rates of all types of violence. This increased vulnerability may be due to factors related to di…
