With the exception of the domestic cat, all members of the family Felidae are considered either endangered or threatened. Although not yet used for this purpose, spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) transplantation has a high potential to preserve the genetic stock of endangered species. However, this technique has not previously been established in felids. Therefore, we developed the necessary procedures to perform syngeneic and xenogeneic SSC transplants (eg, germ cell [GC] depletion in the recipient domestic cats, enrichment and labeling of donor cell suspension, and the transplantation method) i

Germ cell tumors (GCT) are a heterogeneous group of lesions whose origin is not well established. Several cases of primary intrasellar germinomas have been reported, however non-germinomatous GCT have rarely been described. We report the case of a young adult male patient with a mixed GCT that presented with a sellar tumor with suprasellar extension. The patient seeked medical attention because of seizures and magnetic resonance imaging evidenced a tumor of the sellar region. Hyperprolactinemia was also present and dopamine agonist therapy was started. As there was a rapid tumor growth and the

Serviço de Oncologia Médica. Instituto Português de Oncologia Francisco Gentil. Porto. Portugal. A 27-year-old man, smoker, presented with three months history of fever. A left pulmonary mass inseparable from the heart was identified and serum alpha-fetoprotein was 4160 ng/ml. The morphologic aspects and immunohistochemistry of the biopsy specimen, in conjunction with the clinical findings were compatible with a diagnosis of pulmonary blastoma with germ cell differentiation. The tumour was considered unresectable. The patient was submitted to two cycles of primary chemotherapy with bleomycin,

We report a case of a cerebellar tumor consisting of a mixed germ cell tumor (GCT) and a hemangioblastoma. A 22-year-old man presented with myoclonus and cerebellar ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a tumor mass in the left cerebellar hemisphere. The tumor was totally removed, and the histological diagnosis was an undetermined neoplasm. Ten months later, the patient returned with cerebellar hemorrhage at the site of the previous tumor. An emergency craniotomy was performed, and a tumor mass adjacent to the hematoma was resected. Microscopic examination revealed a mixed GCT consisting o

The development of an angiosarcomatous component in germ cell tumors is rare. Here we studied 12 cases of mediastinal germ cell tumors with an angiosarcomatous component. All patients were men with a mean age of 34 years (range, 24-49 years). No patient had a documented testicular germ cell tumor. The mean size of mediastinal tumors was 12.9 cm (range, 5.5-16.0 cm). Grossly, the tumors were cystic with variegated hemorrhagic, mucinous, and fleshy solid areas. Microscopically, all tumors were composed of germ cell tumor. The most common germ cell tumor component was teratoma (n = 10); and other

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of germ-cell tumor localized at the level of the anterior mediastinum.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old man who presented with left subclavial vein thrombosis was admitted to our hospital for specific cure. Computed tomographic scan of the chest showed a large anterior mediastinal mass. Surgical intervention revealed an infiltrative mediastinal tumor involving the left subclavial vein, which was biopsied for morphological examination. Histologically, the tumoral mass proved to be a carcinoma, with papillary and tubular growth patterns. Immunohis

The management of the residual mass in the retroperitoneum following induction chemotherapy for metastatic testicular cancer has evolved over the past three decades. A multidisciplinary approach involving cisplatin-based chemotherapy and postchemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (PC-RPLND) has increased long-term survival rates above 80%. Advances into the appropriate patient selection and timing of surgery have lowered morbidity while improving oncologic outcomes. However, areas of controversy still exist within the field. Management of the small residual mass, predictors of the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the molecular mechanism of germ cell apoptosis following testicular torsion in rats.
METHODS: Healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 16) were equally randomized into a control and a torsion group and the models of testicular torsion (720 degrees 2 h) were established. Twenty-four hours later, the apoptosis and count of germ cells were determined by flow cytometry, the expressions of Bax, Fas and Fas ligand (FasL) mRNA semiquantitatively analyzed by RT-PCR and the cytochrome C release detected by Western blot.
RESULTS: Compared with the control group, there was an obv…

It is extremely rare that a documented case of blunt trauma results in rupture of a testicular tumor. We present the case of a 24-year-old man who was crushed by a tree who developed spontaneous testicular rupture. At surgical exploration, he was found to ultimately have a mixed germ cell tumor of the testicle. This case illustrates the importance of physical examination, patient clinical history, and scrotal ultrasound in the management of scrotal trauma. In this instance, the testicular mass ruptured and lead to significant testicular hemorrhage.

Temperature-related sequence 4 (Trs4) has been identified as a testis-specific gene with expression sensitive to the abdominal temperature changes induced by artificial cryptorchidism. In murine testes, Trs4 mRNA was detected in round spermatids and its protein was localized mainly in the elongating spermatids as well as in the acrosomes and tails of mature spermatozoa. Using a yeast two-hybrid screening system, we identified Rshl-2, Gstmu1, and Ddc8 as putative binding partners of the Trs4 protein in mouse testes. Their interactions were confirmed by in vivo and in vitro binding assays. Furth

Positron emission tomography (PET) with (18)F-fluorodeoxy-glucose indicates metabolically active tissue. When investigating enhancing intracranial tumours, we have suggested that PET positivity might suggest an intracranial germ cell tumour (IGCT). Here, we present a case with dicentric IGCT where PET was initially discordant between the lesions and where PET then became negative despite clearly aggressive clinical behaviour. A cautionary note is introduced with respect to the interpretation of negative (18)F-FDG PET when investigating enhancing intracranial lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular tumors can be classified as seminomatous and non-seminomatous germ-cell tumor (NSGCT) types. Mixed germ cell tumors contain more than one germ cell component and are much more common than any of the pure histologic forms representing 32%-60% of all germ cell tumors. The composition of these tumors varies. Here we present a rare case of a mixed germ cell tumor composed of seminoma, Yolk sack tumor and teratoma containing a sarcoma component of somatic type malignancy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Caucasian male presented with history of right-sided scrotal swelling

The development of sarcomatous component (SC) in testicular germ cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon phenomenon. We searched our surgical pathology files from 1985 to 2007 and identified 33 cases of testicular GCTs with SC. The average age of patients was 31 years. All patients underwent radical orchiectomy, which demonstrated a GCT in all patients except for 3 patients who had received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. All testicular GCTs contained a teratomatous component. The GCTs were pure teratomas in 3 cases, and were mixed GCTs in the other cases. The SC was observed in primary testicular tumor (n=

OBJECT: Intracranial germ cell tumors (GCTs) originating in the basal ganglia are rare. The authors investigated factors related to the diagnosis of these lesions as well as outcome in order to help decrease the time to diagnosis and improve treatment efficacy.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the clinical features of 142 cases of intracranial GCT in their institute. Fourteen cases of basal ganglia GCT were identified. The symptoms, neuroimaging findings, delay between symptom onset and diagnosis or treatment, initial and further treatment, and outcome were investigated.
RESULTS: Major symptoms

Ureal metastases (although an uncommon site of metastatic involvement) are seen with primary tumours of the lung and breast and, very rarely, in other primary tumours. Undescended testis predisposes to malignancy. We present a rare case of choroidal metastasis from a non-seminomatous germ cell tumour arising in an undescended testis, and describe its clinical, ultrasound and MRI findings together with a relevant review of the literature.

Mixed germ cell tumors with non-germ cell malignant components rarely occur in the anterior mediastinum. We report a case of a 34-year-old man who presented with an anterior mediastinum mass. Mixed germ cell tumor was initially diagnosed based on the pathologic findings of germinoma on thoracoscopic biopsy and clinical findings of elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin. The patient received preoperative chemotherapy and subsequent complete resection of the residual tumor. Pathologic examination of the excised specimen showed predominantly malignant ganglioneurom

We report a rare case of a retroperitoneal germ cell tumor in a 31 years old male who presented with an acute abdomen. He gave a six-months history of back pain and significant weight loss. Clinical examination and ultrasound of the testes didn't show any primary focus. Intraoperative findings showed a retrolperitoneal midline mass that has ruptured into the peritoneal cavity and has invaded into the duodenum. The final pathology revealed a yolk sac tumor. We present this rare case of a primary para-aortic extragonadal yolk sac tumor and the differential diagnosis of a retroperitoneal mass.
