Platelets (PL) may be involved in the inflammatory process through the release of a variety of factors which could contribute to gingival tissue injury. PURPOSE: The primary objective of this study was to determine the most commonly biopsied gingival lesions in a university-based school of dentistry biopsy service.
METHODS: The biopsy service at the Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Dentistry accumulated 30,056 cases during a 24-year period (1969 to 1992). Microcomputer technology was used to sort these cases to study the gingival lesions including the incidence of neoplasm and epidemiologic factors of age, gender, and race.
RESULTS: Of the 30,056 biopsies submitted for diagnosis, 3,859 (12.8%) were taken from the gingiva.

The etiology of generalized gingival enlargement is very heterogeneous. Pregnancy, drugs, systemic diseases, poor oral hygiene, and nutritional impairment can lead to gingival enlargement. This defect can also be presented in several malformation syndromes. Gingival fibromatosis, that may exist as an isolated abnormality or as part of a syndrome, is another condition with gingival enlargement. In this paper, the malformation syndromes with gingival hypertrophy and those with gingival fibromatosis are listed in tables.

A hyperplastic (strawberry) gingivitis is a feature of Wegener's granulomatosis. A further case is described in which the only manifestations to date have been the gingival lesion. The diagnostic value of the ANCA test is discussed for patients who present with an unusual hyperplastic gingivitis.

One family of familial gingival fibromatosis was presented. Case 1 is an 11 years old girl. Gingival fibromatosis was noted by delayed eruption of permanent teeth. This study assessed the development of gingival overgrowth in dogs given nitrendipine, a new antihypertensive dihydropyridine. Nine male Beagle dogs with established plaque and gingivitis were used. Following a baseline examination, which involved assessment of plaque, gingivitis, and gingival enlargement, six dogs (test) received nitrendipine twice daily in a high dose, while 3 dogs (control) received placebo. Gingival cysts with clinical manifestations are relatively uncommon lesions. The present study adds thirty-three new cases to the literature and analyzes their clinical and histologic features.
