Bordetella hinzii isolated from the trachea and lungs of a laboratory mouse with a respiratory infection was identified based on its phenotypic and genetic traits. The mouse showed sneezing with a chattering sound but without nasal discharge, and histopathologic examination revealed rhinitis, tracheitis, and bronchopneumonia. The isolate was a gram-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, short rod-shaped organism that produced alkali from malonate. The results of biochemical identification, an alkali production test from malonate, and partial sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene (1523 bp)

Listeria monocytogenes is a ubiquitous gram-positive, rod-shaped, widespread in nature, facultative intracellular human and animal pathogen that causes infections collectively termed listeriosis. L. monocytogenes EGD encodes a total of 133 surface proteins, the abundance of which, as well as the variety of anchoring systems, probably reflects the ability of this bacterium to survive in diverse environments and to interact with many kinds of eukaryotic cells. The group of surface proteins also includes proteins with murein hydrolase activity-autolysins. To date, five L. monocytogenes autolysins

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is primarily an animal disease. Bacillus anthracis, the causal agent in anthrax, is a Gram-positive rod. Humans can acquire anthrax by industrial exposure to infected animals or animal products.
METHODS: Reported here is the case of a 48-year-old male farm worker from Iran with a history of direct contact with herds. He presented after 6 days of fever with toxicity and a crusted ulcer on the face that was later confirmed bacteriologically to be cutaneous anthrax. He was treated with large doses of intravenous penicillin and corticosteroids along with multiple subcutaneous

Anthrax, caused by the Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is rarely seen in industrialized nations but is common in developing countries. Cutaneous anthrax accounts for 95% of cases and usually develops on exposed sites. This study reviews the clinical and laboratory findings of 32 patients diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax over a 4-y period in the eastern part of Turkey. All patients had a history of direct contact with infected animals. The patients, aged 6-72 y, comprised 17 (53%) males and 15 (47%) females. The most frequent localization site of skin lesi

Over 200 bacterial strains were selected for anaerobic growth at 50 degrees C and extracellular polysaccharide production in a sucrose-mineral salts medium with NaNO(3) and up to 10% NaCl. The predominant cell type was an encapsulated gram-positive, motile, facultative sporeforming rod similar to Bacillus species. Strain SP018 grew and produced the polysaccharide on a variety of substrates at salinities up to 12% NaCl. Good polymer production only occurred anaerobically and was optimal between 4 and 10% NaCl. The ethanol-precipitated SP018 polymer was a charged heteropolysaccharide that contai

The terrestrial serpentinite-hosted ecosystem known as "The Cedars" is home to a diverse microbial community persisting under highly alkaline (pH ~ 12) and reducing (Eh < -550 mV) conditions. This extreme environment presents particular difficulties for microbial life, and efforts to isolate microorganisms from The Cedars over the past decade have remained challenging. Herein, we report the initial physiological assessment and/or full genomic characterization of three isolates: Paenibacillus sp. Cedars ('Paeni-Cedars'), Alishewanella sp. BS5-314 ('Ali-BS5-314'), and Anaerobacillus sp. CMMVII (

BACKGROUND: Between February and April 2016, a slight increase in mortality was observed in a colony consisting of 400 captive Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata). These animals cohabited with other nocturnal animal species in a dome of a private zoo in Switzerland.
RESULTS: Gross and histological analysis of two (14.3%) out of the 13 animals submitted for necropsy within this period revealed a necrosuppurative pneumonia, hepatitis, splenitis, enterocolitis, and endometritis, with abundant intralesional colonies of Gram-negative rods. Yersinia (Y.) pseudotuberculosis serotype O:

Five nitrogen-fixing bacterial strains (SP1(T), NN143, NN144, NN208 and HX148) were isolated from stem, root or rhizosphere soil of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) plants. Cells were Gram-negative, motile, rods with peritrichous flagella. DNA G+C content was 55.0 ± 0.5 mol%. Sequence determinations and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene and rpoB indicated that the strains were affiliated with the genus Enterobacter and most closely related to E. radicincitans DSM 16656(T) and E. oryzae LMG 24251(T). Leptotrichia spp. are anaerobic, pencil-shaped, Gram-negative rods that are part of the normal oral and intestinal human flora. Although not typically considered pathogenic, invasive Leptotrichia infections have been reported in immunosuppressed patients. A perceived rise in the identification of Leptotrichia spp. at our institution prompted a retrospective evaluation of these infections. Laboratory and clinical records were reviewed to identify Leptotrichia culture-positive patients. Over a 5-year period, 68 Leptotrichia-positive specimens were identified. Of these, 21% (14/68) were identifie

In order to investigate the occurrence of Helicobacter pullorum in turkeys, caecum contents collected at the slaughterhouse from 55 animals intensively reared in 11 farms were sampled. Gram-negative curved rod bacteria were isolated by a modified Steele and McDermott filter technique and further identified as H. pullorum by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Eleven and 31 isolates, randomly selected from each positive farm, underwent phenotypic (biochemical and antibiotic susceptibility tests) and genotypic characterization (PFGE and AFLP analysis), respectively. Forty-two out of 55 animals (76.

INTRODUCTION: Although skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) of the extremities are primarily caused by Gram-positive cocci (GPC), some cases are caused by Gram-negative rod (GNR). In addition, malignancy is a recognized risk factor for GNR infection. Nevertheless, information on the clinical and microbiologic characteristics of SSTIs of the extremities caused by GNR in patients with malignancy is limited.
METHODS: Clinical and microbiological characteristics of patients with malignancy who developed bacteremic SSTIs of the extremities at a single cancer center over eight years were reviewe

A 69-year-old woman with 26-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus and 4-year history of peritoneal dialysis was hospitalized for treatment of bacterial peritonitis. On admission, peritoneal dialysate was collected and subjected to bacterial culture. Cell count in the cloudy peritoneal dialysate was 4194/μL, and Gram-negative bacilli were detected. Vancomycin (1 g/day) and ceftazidime (1 g/day) were administered intraperitoneally, which resulted in rapid decrease in cell count in the peritoneal dialysate. However, on the 7th hospital day, peritonitis relapsed with abdominal pain and clou
