The susceptibility of five inbred strains of mice, designated DBA/1J, DBA/2J, C57BL/6J, Balf/CJ, and AKR/J, as well as outbred Hartley and Moen-Chase guinea pigs to infection with Coxiella burnetii by several routes was studied. The DBA/2J mice were more susceptible to infection and had higher mortality rates than other strains of mice. Guinea pigs were more susceptible to infection than mice. Lesions observed in the infected animals were similar to those previously described in man and experimentally infected animals.

Osteodentin formation in guinea pig teeth was studied using in vivo microscopic and histologic techniques. The coronal half of both incisors and molars contained varying amounts of osteodentin. Within the osteodentin, narrow canals that contained pulp tissue were observed. Serial histologic sections demonstrated that these canals opened to the occlusal surface thereby exposing the pulp to the oral cavity.

The presence of cell-mediated immunity in Rocky Mountain spotted fever-infected guinea pigs was determined by two in vitro assays: whole blood lymphocyte transformation (LT) and macrophage migration inhibition. Increased LT was detected as early as 1 week in guinea pigs infected with Rickettsia rickettsii and treated with oxytetracycline and was detected by two weeks in infected but untreated guinea pigs. Elevated LT was still detectable at 10 weeks postinfection. Guinea pigs vaccinated with killed rickettsiae failed to develop lymphocyte responsiveness; however, there was a rapid lymphocyte r…

The phagocytosis and subsequent degradation of phase I and II Coxiella burnetii by macrophages obtained from immune and nonimmune guinea pigs were compared. Phase I rickettsiae were more resistant to phagocytosis than were phase II organisms. There was no significant difference in the percentage of phagocytosis of either phase of rickettsiae by macrophages from immune or nonimmune animals. After ingestion, phase I and II organisms pretreated with normal serum multiplied and destroyed normal macrophages as well as macrophages obtained from guinea pigs immunized with phase II rickettsiae. In con…

Free-living amebas of the genus Naegleria, of world-wide distribution and long considered harmless, have been linked etiologically with 57 fatal cases of primary amebic meningoencephalitis during the last decade. Naegleria from cultures derived from one of these fatal cases in Richmond, Virginia, have been inoculated intranasally, intraorally, into the conjunctival sac near the inner canthus of the eyes, and into induced skin lesions in adult germfree guinea pigs. Of 33 animals inoculated intranasally with 18 to 31 amebas, 31 developed a fatal encephalitis. There was considerable destruction o…

The physicochemical and biological properties of purified guinea-pig reaginic antibody were studied. It is a labile protein different to γ1. Its antibody activity is completely destroyed by heating at 56° for 6 hours and by treatment with mercaptoethanol. The capacity to give PCA is decreased by repeated freezing and thawing. It is a bivalent antibody, haemagglutinating, does not fix complement and is capable of sensitizing guinea-pig skin for PCA reaction after a latent period of a week but not after 3 hours. Reaginic antibody appears on day 7–8 after the first inoculation and the higher leve…
