The lower urinary tract (LUT) has two functions: (1) the storage of waste products in the form of urine and (2) the elimination of those wastes through micturition. The LUT operates in a simple "on-off" fashion, either storing urine or releasing it during voiding. While this activity may seem simple, micturition is controlled by a complex set of peripheral neurons that are, in turn, coordinated by cell groups in the spinal cord, brainstem, and brain. When this careful coordination is interrupted, the control of the bladder is lost, resulting in incontinence or retention of urine. The purpose o

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal discomfort or pain in the absence of detectable organic disease. IBS is common and is associated with a significant impairment in health-related quality of life. Enhanced perception of visceral stimuli ("visceral hypersensitivity") appears to be an important pathophysiological mechanism. Early IBS studies using functional brain imaging techniques suggest an alteration in central pain modulation circuits, rather than an increased sensitivity of peripheral visceral pain pathways. The frequ

Cerebral blood flow studies in humans suggest that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) could be involved in eye movement control. In two patients with a small infarction affecting the posterior part of this area (on the right side) and in ten control subjects, we studied several paradigms of saccadic eye movements: gap task, overlap task, antisaccades (using either a 5 degrees or 25 degrees lateral target), memory-guided saccades with a short (1 s) or long (7 s) delay, and sequences of memory-guided saccades. Compared with controls, patients had normal latency in the gap task but increased lat

It remains controversial whether agraphia can coexist in a case with apraxia of speech, and whether an apraxia of speech can be classified into a category of aphasia. We examined the presence of agraphia in 2 right-handed patients of apraxia of speech. Case 1 of mild agraphia showed an infarcted lesion in the left precentral gyrus extending to the neighboring white matter, which involving the arcuate fasciculus on MRI. Positron emission tomography (PET) indicated decrease of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) in the infarcted lesion, but no decrease of CBF

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) can come with intense cravings, which can trigger compulsive use/relapse, underscored by anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) hyperactivity during cannabis cue-reactivity functional neuroimaging (fMRI) tasks. ACC activity can be reduced during real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback (fMRI-neurofeedback) in participants who use substances other than cannabis, but remains untested in CUD. We investigated the feasibility of fMRI-neurofeedback to reduce ACC activity and subjective craving in 10 participants with moderate-to-severe CUD.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF), a measure fundamental to brain health. Blood pressure (BP) is elevated in BD, and associated with CBF. Research integrating these themes, particularly in youth, remains limited.
METHODS: Participants included 144 youth aged 13-20 (76 BD, 68 healthy controls [HC]). T1-weighted and arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI were collected, alongside diastolic (DBP) and systolic (SBP) BP. CBF maps were calculated from ASL. Region of interest (ROI) and voxel-wise analyses examined BP in relation to CBF, controlli

Chronic pain (CP) is closely related with major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders (ANX), with high comorbidity and shared risk factors. Prior studies have demonstrated common neural correlates across the three disorders, but their neuroanatomic basis is not fully clear. Hence, the preregistered meta-analysis (CRD42019119709) intended to explore common alterations in cortical thickness among CP, MDD, and ANX, a widely used parameter for quantitatively assessing various cerebral conditions with high sensitivity to pathology in neuropsychology. A total of 68 studies comprising 3072

BACKGROUND: Opioids, which are widely used during surgery in perioperative settings, may cause hyperalgesia, especially when the opioid employed is remifentanil. Opioid-induced hyperalgesia may increase the length of a patient's hospital stay and negatively affect enhanced recovery after surgery and the patient's prognosis. Currently, there is no consensus on treatment strategies for remifentanil-induced postoperative hyperalgesia (RIPH).
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that upregulation of lipocalin-2 (LCN2) in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) contributes to RIPH.

The encoding, storage, and updating of memories in cortical networks are poorly understood. In retrosplenial cortex (RSC), cells respond to the animal's position as it traverses a real or virtual (VR) linear track. Most position correlated cells (PCCs) in RSC require an intact hippocampus to form, but survive subsequent hippocampal damage. To examine whether RSC and hippocampal PCCs undergo remapping and spatial tuning development in parallel or sequentially, neuronal activity in RSC or CA1 was recorded using two-photon calcium imaging in mice running on VR tracks. RSC PCC activity underwent g

Astrocytes regulate synaptic transmission in healthy and pathological conditions, but their involvement in modulating synaptic transmission in chronic pain is unknown. Our study demonstrates that astrocytes in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) exhibit abnormal calcium signals and induce the release of glutamate in male mice. This leads to an elevation in extracellular glutamate concentration, activation of presynaptic kainate receptors, and an increase in synaptic transmission following neuropathic pain. We discovered that the abnormal calcium signals are caused by the reappearance of metabo

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are psychiatric disorders that can present with overlapping symptoms and shared risk factors. However, the extent to which these disorders share common underlying neuropathological mechanisms remains unclear. To investigate the similarities and differences in task-evoked brain activation patterns between patients with PTSD and MDD.
METHODS: A coordinate-based meta-analysis was conducted across 35 PTSD studies (564 patients and 543 healthy controls) and 125 MDD studies (4049 patients and 4170 healthy controls

Age-related changes of intracortical myelin in bipolar disorder (BD) have been observed to deviate from the quadratic age curve observed in healthy controls (HC), but it is unclear if this holds at varying cortical depths. From BD (n = 44; age range = 17.6-45.5 years) and HC (n = 60; age range = 17.1-45.8 years) participants, we collected 3T T1-weighted (T1w) images with strong intracortical contrast. Signal values were sampled from 3 equivolume cortical depths. Linear mixed models were used to compare age-related changes in the T1w signal between depths and between groups at each depth. In HC

BACKGROUND: Alterations in the default mode network (DMN) connectivity across pain stages suggest a possible DMN involvement in the transition to persistent pain.
AIM: This study examined whether pain-free DMN connectivity at lower alpha oscillations (8-10 Hz) accounts for a unique variation in experimental peak pain intensity beyond the contribution of factors known to influence pain intensity.
METHODS: Pain-free DMN connectivity was measured with electroencephalography prior to 1 h of capsaicin-evoked pain using a topical capsaicin patch on the right forearm. Pain intensity was assessed on

BACKGROUND: Structural brain changes have been associated with childhood trauma (CT) and several trauma-associated mental disorders. It is not known whether specific brain alterations are rather associated with CT as such or with disorders that are common sequelae of CT. In this study, we characterized cortical thickness in three distinct groups with CT: healthy women (HC/CT), women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD/CT) and women with borderline personality disorder (BPD/CT). These three CT-exposed groups were compared with healthy controls not exposed to CT (HC).
METHODS: We recruited

BACKGROUND: Alterations within large-scale brain networks-namely, the default mode (DMN) and salience networks (SN)-are present among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography neurofeedback studies suggest that regulating posterior cingulate cortex (PCC; the primary hub of the posterior DMN) activity may reduce PTSD symptoms and recalibrate altered network dynamics. However, PCC connectivity to the DMN and SN during PCC-targeted fMRI neurofeedback remains unexamined and may help to elucidate

BACKGROUND: Neuronal dysfunction plays an important role in the high prevalence of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) in people with HIV (PWH). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)-with its capability to improve neuronal function-may have the potential to serve as an alternative therapeutic approach for HAND. Brain imaging and neurobehavioral studies provide converging evidence that injury to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is highly prevalent and contributes to HAND in PWH, suggesting that ACC may serve as a potential neuromodulation target for HAND. Here we conducte

The suppression of distracting information in order to focus on an actual cognitive goal is a key feature of executive functions. The use of brain imaging methods to investigate the underlying neurobiological brain activations that occur during conflict processing have demonstrated a strong involvement of the fronto-parietal attention network (FPAN). Surprisingly, the directional interconnections, their time courses and activations at different frequency bands remain to be elucidated, and thus, this constitutes the focus of this study. The shared information flow between brain areas of the FPA

BACKGROUND: The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and its neurocircuits are central in impulsivity, and maladaptive dACC activity has been implicated in psychological disorders characterized by high trait impulsivity. High-Definition transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation tool that, with certain electrode configurations, can be optimized for targeting deeper subcorticalbrainstructures, such as the dACC.
OBJECTIVES: Using behavioural and electrophysiological measures we investigated whether HD-tDCS targeting the dACC could modulate two key com

Myo-inositol is mainly found in astroglia and its levels has been shown to be reduced in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of patients with schizophrenia. We investigate the status of astroglial integrity indexed by ACC myo-inositol at the onset and over the first 6 months of treatment of first episode schizophrenia. We employed 7 T magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and quantified myo-inositol spectra at the dorsal ACC in 31 participants; 21 patients with schizophrenia with median lifetime antipsychotic exposure of less than 3 days, followed up after 6 months of treatment, and 10 heal
