Is it worth applying self-irrigation after third molar extraction? A randomised controlled trial.

In this study, we aimed to examine the effectiveness of self-irrigation following the extraction of mandibular third molars. A randomised controlled clinical trial was conducted with 155 patients who had undergone extraction of a mandibular third molar. The irrigation group was instructed to self-irrigate the extraction socket with tap water using a syringe three times a day, starting seven days after the tooth extraction. The incidence of complications and mouth opening, halitosis, plaque/gingival index, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) were measured. The irrigation group show…

Ultrastructural changes in epithelial cells of rats exposed to low concentration of hydrogen sulfide for 50 days.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) appear mainly in the oral air of patients with halitosis. It seems that VSCs are directly involved in the pathogenesis of gingival diseases. In previous studies, short-term (7 hours-4 days), high concentrations (5-400 ppm) of H2S applications on periodontal tissues have been evaluated in a culture medium. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential effects of lower (equivalent to halitosis) concentrations of H2S on rat gingival tissue for longer-term inhalation. The threshold level of pathologic halitosis perce…

[Observation of the ultrastructure of the tongue coating].

An observational study was conducted to clarify the morphological features of the fine structure of the tongue coating, which is one of the main causes of halitosis. Tongue specimens from cadavers, whom dental students had practiced on for anatomy class, were used as materials to observe the surface structure. Tongue coatings were obtained from patients who were referred to the Fresh Breath Clinic, Dental Hospital, Tokyo Medical and Dental University. After macroscopic observation of the tongue surface, tongue coating and examination of halitosis, the tongue coating was scraped carefully, foll…

The relationship between oral malodor and volatile sulfur compound-producing bacteria.

Halitosis can be a crippling social problem, and standard dental treatments and mouthwashes often provide only temporary relief. The mouth is home to hundreds of bacterial species that produce several fetid substances as a result of protein degradation. Volatile sulfur compound (VSC)-producing bacteria colonizing the lingual dorsum have recently been implicated in the generation of halitosis. Detection of VSCs, such as methylmercaptan and hydrogen sulfite, via organoleptic and objective methods, can aid in the identification of their source. Following comprehensive evaluation for possible caus…

Relationship Between the Salivary Microbiome and Oral Malodor Metabolites in Older Thai Individuals with Periodontitis and the Cytotoxic Effects of Malodor Compounds on Human Oral Squamous Carcinoma (HSC-4) Cells.

Background/Objectives: Halitosis is primarily caused by the activity of oral microorganisms. In this study, we employed metagenomic sequencing and metabolomic approaches to investigate the differences in salivary microbiota and metabolite profiles between individuals with halitosis and periodontitis and healthy controls. Additionally, we expanded the study to examine how oral malodorous compounds interact with human oral squamous carcinoma (HSC-4) cells. Methods: Saliva samples were collected and analyzed using Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) to identi…

Action of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy with red leds in microorganisms related to halitose: Controlled and randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Halitosis is the term used to describe any unpleasant odor relative to expired air regardless of its source. The prevalence of halitosis in the population is approximately 30%, of which 80 to 90% of the cases originate in the oral cavity resulting from proteolytic degradation by gram negative anaerobic bacteria. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been widely used with very satisfactory results in the health sciences. It involves the use of a non-toxic dye, called photosensitizer (FS), and a light source of a specific wavelength in the presence of the environmental oxyg…

A new tool measuring oral malodor quality of life.

A valid measure of oral malodor (halitosis) and associated quality of life is required for the complete assessment of treatment effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to analyze the psychometric and clinimetric validity of the Halitosis Associated Life-quality Test (HALT) questionnaire, a specific 20-item quality-of-life measure for halitosis. The HALT is a de novo designed tool based on patient interviews and literature review. The University Hospital was the setting for the prospective random non-controlled study design. The comparison between the evaluator' scales on organoleptic test…

Profiling volatile compounds from culture supernatants of periodontal bacteria using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/olfactometry analysis with a monolithic silica gel adsorption device.

Halitosis is formed mainly by the volatile compounds produced by periodontal bacteria. Three volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, and dimethyl sulfide, have attracted attention as major components of halitosis. However, these compounds cannot account for all odors. In this study, we profiled volatile compounds from the culture supernatants of periodontal bacteria using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/olfactometry analysis with a monolithic silica gel adsorption device to investigate the potential odorous compounds. Periodontal bacteria have been found to produ…

The investigation of Helicobacter pylori in the dental biofilm and saliva samples of children with dyspeptic complaints.

BACKGROUND: The oral cavity can be an extra-gastric reservoir for Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori). This can play a role in the pathogenesis of halitosis, glossitis, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and dental caries. The present study was conducted to detect the presence of H.pylori within the dental biofilm and in saliva samples collected from children suffering from dyspepsia and children without any gastrointestinal complaints. Associations with gastric infection, halitosis, and some oral parameters were also evaluated. METHODS: Seventy children (aged between 5-16) with dyspepsia were selecte…

[Bad breath--etiological, diagnostic and therapeutic problems].

Oral malodor has many etiologies and is a clinical problem for many people. This paper reviews the causes and management of oral malador. In the majority of cases the problem has been shown to originate in the oral cavity. Oral malodor, a generic descriptor term for foul smells emanating from the mouth, encompasses ozostomia, stomatodysodia, halitosis (both pathological halitosis and physiological halitosis) and fetor oris or fetor ex ore. These latter terms, in turn, denote different sources of oral malodor. All conditions that favour the retention of anaerobic, mainly gram-negative, bacteria…

Salivary Flow, Tongue-Coating Burden, and Morning Breath Odor: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Morning halitosis undermines social well-being, yet the combined influence of basal salivary flow and tongue coating in healthy adults is unclear. Methods: In a cross-sectional study of 92 university students (18-35 years), we measured unstimulated salivary flow rate (uSFR), tongue-coating index (TCI), total volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs; Halimeter®), organoleptic score (0-5), and self-perceived halitosis (yes/no) under standardized early-morning conditions. Results: Thirty-seven participants (40.2%) reported morning halitosis and showed lower uSFR (0.2 ± 0.1 vs. 0…

Assessment of oral malodor and tonsillar microbiota after gargling with benzethonium chloride.

The oropharyngeal area can be a source of halitosis. However, the relationship between healthy tonsillar microbiota and halitosis is poorly understood. We conducted a pilot clinical study to clarify the effect of gargling with an antiseptic agent on tonsillar microbiota in patients with halitosis. Twenty-nine halitosis patients who did not have otolaryngologic disease or periodontitis were assigned randomly to one of three groups: benzethonium chloride (BZC) gargle; placebo gargle; no gargle. Concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in mouth air, the organoleptic score (ORS) and tong…
