Electric scooter sharing systems: An analysis of injury patterns associated with their introduction.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing popularity of electric scooters (ES) and the introduction of ES sharing systems in 2017, hospitals are seeing more ES-related injuries. The effects of sharing systems on traumatic injuries are lacking in the literature. We, therefore, sought to describe trends in ES injuries. METHODS: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample was queried for patients hospitalized with ES-related injuries in the United States from 2015 to 2019. Admissions due to ES were divided into two cohorts: before (≤2017) and after (>2018) the introduction of sharing systems. Patients were stratified

Geriatric All-Terrain Vehicle Trauma: An Unhelmeted and Severely Injured Population.

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) use is widespread, however, little is known about injury patterns and outcomes in geriatric patients. We hypothesized that geriatric patients would have distinct and more severe injuries than non-geriatric adults after ATV trauma. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using the National Trauma Databank comparing non-geriatric (18-64) and geriatric adults (≥65) presenting after ATV trauma at Level 1 and 2 trauma centers from 2011 to 2015. Demographic, admission, and outcomes data were collected, including injury severity score (ISS), abbrevia

The relationships between correct helmet use, enforcement presence, and mortality in a Latin-America city: The case study of Bogotá, Colombia.

OBJECTIVE: In Bogotá, Colombia, motorcyclists represent a concern as the proportion of motorcycle users between 2013 and 2018 has increased from 18% to 35%. Despite available risk reduction strategies, the fatality rates are also growing, notably in young adults (15-29 years old). This study aims at identifying correct helmet use patterns and its relationship with official records of injuries and casualties in the city over time. METHODS: Between 2015 and 2018, semiannual observational studies of motorcycle users in six randomly selected sites in Bogotá were conducted. Data was collected and

Skiing and snowboarding head injury: A retrospective centre-based study and implications for helmet test standards.

BACKGROUND: Head injury occurs in up to 47% of skiing or snowboarding injuries and is the predominant cause of death in these sports. In most existing literature reporting injury type and prevalence, head injury mechanisms are underreported. Thus, protective equipment design relies on safety evaluation test protocols that are likely oversimplified. This study aims to characterize severity and mechanism of head injuries suffered while skiing and snowboarding in a form appropriate to supplement existing helmet evaluation methods. METHODS: A 6-year, multicentre, retrospective clinical record rev

Wearing a bike helmet leads to less cognitive control, revealed by lower frontal midline theta power and risk indifference.

A recent study claims that participants wearing a bike helmet behave riskier in a computer-based risk task compared to control participants without a bike helmet. We hypothesized that wearing a bike helmet reduces cognitive control over risky behavior. To test our hypothesis, we recorded participants' EEG brain responses while they played a risk game developed in our laboratory. Previously, we found that, in this risk game, anxious participants showed greater levels of cognitive control as revealed by greater frontal midline theta power, which was associated with less risky decisions. Here, we

A Case of Bilateral Extracranial Internal Carotid Artery Dissection Due to the Helmet Strap After Motorcycle Crash.

The authors report a case of a man who developed stroke symptoms a few days after a road accident on his motorcycle. Radiographic examinations revealed the presence of bilateral dissection of the extracranial internal carotid arteries with signs of involvement of the brain parenchyma. The location, timing, and presentation lead to the conclusion that the carotid lesions were secondary to the motorcycle collision; in particular, we suppose that it is due to the pressure exerted by the helmet strap worn. Although helmets have undoubtedly prevented serious injuries, this report highlights that the

Assessing calvarial vault constriction associated with helmet therapy in deformational plagiocephaly.

OBJECTIVE Deformational plagiocephaly and/or brachycephaly (DPB) is a cranial flattening frequently treated in pediatric craniofacial centers. The standard of care for DPB involves patient positioning or helmet therapy. Orthotic therapy successfully reduces cranial asymmetry, but there is concern over whether the orthotics have the potential to restrict cranial growth. Previous research addressing helmet safety was limited by lack of volume measurements and serial data. The purpose of this study was to directly compare head growth data in patients with DPB between those who underwent helmet th

[Prevalence and evolution of helmet use in motorcycle riders in an Argentine city (Mar del Plata, 2006-2014)].

Traffic collisions involving motorcyclists are a growing problem in low and middle income countries. Helmet use is the foremost protective measure for this group of road users, however many riders do not wear them. The objective of the present study is to report the changes in helmet use during the period 2006-2014 in an Argentine city and discover associated factors for the year 2014. The sample includes more than 6,900 observations of motorcyclists carried out during the years 2006 (n=962), 2008 (n=977), 2012 (n=2,542), and 2014 (n=2,466). The data indicates a progressive increase in helmet

Motorcycle helmets save lives, but not limbs: a National Trauma Data Bank analysis of functional outcomes after motorcycle crash.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of motorcycle fatalities over the last 10 y has nearly doubled. There is considerable evidence that motorcycle helmets save lives, but there are little data regarding the impact that helmets have on functional outcomes after a motorcycle crash. The objective of this study was to determine the difference between helmeted and non-helmeted motorcyclists in the odds of developing a functional deficit at discharge in three domains: speech, locomotion, and feeding. METHODS: Reviewed cases in the National Trauma Databank v7.0 involved in motorcycle collisions. Multiple logi
