Healthy middle-aged individuals are vulnerable to cognitive deficits as a result of increased arterial stiffness.

OBJECTIVES: Whilst pulse pressure and pulse wave velocity have been shown to predict cognitive outcomes, the relationship between arterial stiffness and cognition has not yet been explored in an entirely healthy nonclinical population. Furthermore, the effects of arterial stiffness on cognition are yet to be examined with computerized cognitive test batteries sensitive to subtle differences in cognitive performance. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between arterial stiffness (pulse pressure and augmentation index) and specific domains of cognitive performance in a h

Comparison of skeletal muscle strength between cardiac patients and age-matched healthy controls.

The purpose of the present study was to compare muscular strength of knee extensors and arm flexor muscles of cardiac patients (n = 638) and healthy controls (n = 961) in different age groups. Isometric torques were measured in a sitting position with the elbow, hip, and knee flexed to 90(0). For statistical analysis, age groups were pooled in decades from the age of 30 to 90 years. Additionally, the influence of physical lifestyle prior to disease on muscular strength was obtained in the patients. For statistical analysis three-way ANOVA (factors age, gender, and physical activity level) was

Metabolic syndrome and cognitive function in healthy middle-aged and older adults without diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have addressed whether the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its individual components are associated with cognitive function in middle-aged and older populations, as well as whether specific areas of cognition are more affected than others. We examined the cross-sectional association between MetS and six areas of cognitive function in healthy cognitively intact adults without diabetes (n = 853, mean age 61 years) randomized in two intervention trials. METHODS: The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) criteria were used to identify subjects with MetS. Cognitive fun

The cost of community-managed viral respiratory illnesses in a cohort of healthy preschool-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory illnesses (ARIs) during childhood are often caused by respiratory viruses, result in significant morbidity, and have associated costs for families and society. Despite their ubiquity, there is a lack of interdisciplinary epidemiologic and economic research that has collected primary impact data, particularly associated with indirect costs, from families during ARIs in children. METHODS: We conducted a 12-month cohort study in 234 preschool children with impact diary recording and PCR testing of nose-throat swabs for viruses during an ARI. We used applied values t

Vitamin A deficiency in healthy children aged 6-59 months in Izmir Province of Turkey.

Vitamin A deficiency even at subclinical levels is associated with increased childhood mortality. There have been few studies related to vitamin A status of children in Turkey. The aim of this study was to assess vitamin A status of children aged 6-59 months in Izmir, Turkey, and to evaluate the relationship of these levels with nutritional status. One hundred and sixty children were selected for the study using the cluster sampling method. Serum retinol levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ranged from 9.8 to 59.2 micrograms/dL (mean 29.3 +/- 9.5 micrograms

Longitudinal analysis of parotid and submandibular salivary flow rates in healthy, different-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: Early studies suggested that salivary gland dysfunction was a normal sequela of aging. Recent research on healthy, different-aged adults has led to a revision of these former conclusions. Parotid gland function appears to be age-stable, yet there is no consensus on submandibular/sublingual output. To date, there have only been two longitudinal studies utilizing healthy individuals examining parotid function, and no published longitudinal studies on submandibular/sublingual output. The purpose of this study was to examine unstimulated and stimulated major salivary gland flow rates i

Effect of ageing on postprandial conjugated and unconjugated serum bile acid levels in healthy subjects.

Colorectal cancer is a disease of elderly subjects. A decreased ileal absorption of bile acids in elderly subjects may lead to an increased exposure of the colonic mucosa to secondary bile acids. This may contribute to an enhanced risk of colorectal cancer. In this study fasting and postprandial conjugated and unconjugated serum levels of cholic, chenodeoxycholic, and deoxycholic acid in 12 elderly and 12 younger subjects were investigated. Intestinal transit time, gallbladder emptying and jejunal bacterial flora were also studied in both age groups. Fasting levels of conjugated and unconjugat

Apnea and periodic breathing in healthy full-term infants, 12-18 months of age.

Many children older than 12 months of age are now on home monitors. Home pneumograms performed on normal infants have established standards, and have been used to evaluate infants during their first year. However, no standards have been described for infants older than 12 months. We, therefore, recorded the standard pneumogram on 88 full-term healthy infants who were 12-18 months of age. We analyzed the recordings for average respiratory and heart rates, apnea (greater than or equal to 6 seconds) density, longest apnea, periodic breathing, and bradycardia for 12 hours. We compared the values i

Meaningful voluntary work design and dual pathways for healthy aging (MVP-HA): a cross-sectional and mixed-methods study in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVES: Volunteering supports healthy aging. However, research has largely examined its health benefits rather than how volunteer work design shapes healthy aging. This study introduces and validates the meaningful voluntary work design and dual pathways for healthy aging (MVP-HA) framework, exploring how volunteer work characteristics (VWCs) relate to subjective well-being (SWB) and cognition via two pathways: quality (role engagement) and quantity (volunteering hours) of volunteering. It also assesses whether sociodemographic factors moderate these relationships. METHODS: Using an expla…

Using a Digital-Based Mindfulness Curriculum to Enhance Healthy Aging Outcomes in Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Taiwan: Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Taiwan's status as a super-aged society underscores the need for efficient strategies to promote healthy aging. While the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions for sleep and mental health are evident, there is a shortage of cultural adaptations for Taiwan's older adults. Current courses mainly focus on mindfulness-based stress reduction, while neglecting mindfulness-based elder care, and mindful sustainable aging principles. However, the abstract nature of some mindfulness concepts, combined with limited digital support and localized resources, makes it challenging for older …

The INSPIRE Bio-Resource Research Platform for Healthy Aging and Geroscience: Focus on the Human Translational Research Cohort (The INSPIRE-T Cohort).

BACKGROUND: The Geroscience field focuses on the core biological mechanisms of aging, which are involved in the onset of age-related diseases, as well as declines in intrinsic capacity (IC) (body functions) leading to dependency. A better understanding on how to measure the true age of an individual or biological aging is an essential step that may lead to the definition of putative markers capable of predicting healthy aging. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the INStitute for Prevention healthy agIng and medicine Rejuvenative (INSPIRE) Platform initiative is to build a program for Geroscien…

Adaptation to partial urethral obstruction in healthy aging LOU rats and the role of nerve growth factor signaling pathway in the bladder.

AIM: Aging is associated with poor ability to adapt to stress and abnormal nerve growth factor (NGF) profile. Lower urinary tract symptoms frequently disturb the quality of life of the aging population with no optimal treatment for both genders. The aim of the study was to compare the bladder response to bladder outflow obstruction in young and old LOU rats, a model of healthy aging that does not develop insulin resistance, and its relation to proNGF/NGF imbalance. METHODS: 6- and 36-month-old female LOU rats were subjected to partial bladder urethral obstruction (PUO) for 2 weeks. Morphometr…

Metabolism and successful aging: Polymorphic variation of syndecan-4 (SDC4) gene associate with longevity and lipid profile in healthy elderly Italian subjects.

Evidences from model systems and humans have suggested that genetic alterations in cell-ECM interactions and matrix-mediated cellular signaling cascades impact different aspects of metabolism and thereby life span. In this frame, a genetic variant (rs1981429) in the SDC4 gene encoding for syndecan-4, a central mediator of cell adhesion, has been associated with body composition in children and coronary artery disease in middle-age subjects. In order to test the hypothesis that syndecans might affect life span by affecting metabolic endophenotypes, 11 SNPs within the SDC4 gene were tested for a
